This is a collection of variations of some of the oldest fly patterns I’ve tied to date. This list ranges from 100-2000 years old! While all these patterns are old, they still catch fish and make for a fun tie. Many of them are commonly found in fly boxes even today. I’d encourage everyone to give them a try, if not for anything else but for old-time sake!

Such a classic dry fly. I’ve used snowshoe rabbit feet fur and calf tail for the post and live the finished fly. Thank you for all you do.

Glad you like them! This is an excellent collection of some tried and true patterns, to try. All of these are still found in many people's fly boxes, and they have no idea how old they are.

@@MainelyFlies I definitely recognized a couple, like the Great Alexander fly from my grandfathers fly box. Again, thanks for the great video!

More awesome history: The earliest surviving book on fly fishing, "A Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle," was written by Dame Juliana Berners and published in 1496. However, there are earlier mentions of fly fishing in literature. For example, the Roman poet Claudius Aelianus wrote about fly fishing in his work "On the Nature of Animals," which was published in the 3rd century AD. Additionally, there are records of fly fishing in Macedonian literature from as early as the 2nd century AD. So while the earliest surviving book on fly fishing is from the 15th century, there are older mentions of fly fishing in literature.

DUDE! I was totally wrong on your last video: The oldest known fishing fly is believed to be about 2,000 years old and was discovered in Japan. It is made of feathers and was likely used for catching trout and salmon. The use of artificial flies to catch fish on a fly can be traced back to ancient times, with evidence of fly fishing dating back to at least 200 AD in Macedonia. However, the modern form of fly fishing, with its characteristic casting technique and equipment, began to emerge in the 19th century in the United Kingdom.

I'm sure there is an early mention than Aelianus work in Japan. I'd like to find it one day. I think here they would have used a dapping technique. The fly tied definitely would have been nowhere near as clean as this one

Is it a true copy of a vintage fly if you use modern materials. they would not have had fluro orange yarn, nor UV resin, Not sure about the goose feathers dyed yellow, and would have used silk thread of modern day.. Not trying to play this video down, but I am interested to see what the flies would have originally looked like
