That's actually true and false. Some are venomous and some of those can be fatal. I'm a licensed snake catcher in NSW Australia and the most common call outs are for eastern brown snakes and tiger snakes, the second and fifth most venomous snakes in the world but not regarded as dangerous unless threatened. Tiger snakes are even docile by nature and would rather head for cover instead of defend itself. Handled gently they remain calm and placid, when cornered and threatened a tiger snake will only strike as a last resort and then it's usually 3 or 4 air strikes as a warning, biting only as a very last resort with the first bite dry, no venom injected. Eastern browns are regarded as the most aggressive of our snakes, but again only if tormented threatened or cornered by some unskilled fool trying to catch or kill it. With all snakes if handled gently and correctly they will remain calm and danger free. You have to make a snake become dangerous for it to be any danger.
