My 3rd favorite decade for music.
@johnthomas50899 жыл бұрын
What's your 1st and 2nd?
@Gravyballs20119 жыл бұрын
Hi John: 2nd place would go to the 1950 because that was the start of "youth music". New areas were explored.As an example, Gospel became R&B and branched off into soul. For the first time in history it was realize that teenagers with their small allowances from babysitting or mowing lawns had real purchasing power and could (and did) affect the GNP. Now they were being marketed to. Government leaders were concerned that the hysteria caused by a man shaking his hips on stage while singing & playing a guitar might cause panic in the streets, turn your child into a social malcontent or riots would form to overturn the local and state governments. "Louie Louie" was deemed to be an offensive album. For the first time words of a song were under close scrutiny. I've often wondered that if World War 2 had a different outcome and that the Allies lost, all popular forms of music that was made in the 1950s would've been destroyed along with their creators. This era also gave rise to the electric guitar as a centerpiece instrument and not just for strumming in the corner. The previous two decades the piano was the instrument to have. Modern electric guitar really began to hit it's stride in the 1950s. The formation of what we tend to think of as a rock band set up: drums, guitar, bass, singer came from the 1950s. My favorite decade is 1970s. 1. Prog, Funk, Fusion, Punk, Soul, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock.Experimental 2.This is the decade I play the most. Many great historic concerts. 3. 1970-1973 is the sweet spot for me. Not only for the music and bands and forms of music that were around then but also for those which hadn't formed yet.Disco for instance.

Phillip S Hi Philip, thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts in great detail; much appreciated. Love the 50s, as I believe this is the foundation that formed so much of the good music through each decade since. Great R&R, R&B, blues, gospel, and even the doo wop. Loved the 70s. For the most part, enjoyed music through the 90s. Appreciate your kind answer.

Yes, several of the songs on here, though they were good- and hits- were from other years. And why was "Mickey" listed twice?

You are right, but this is a small mistake he can correct easily. Making these lists is a big undertaking; he probably did it at 4am in the morning...

Whole range of fantastic tunes many very underrated. I think anyone would say the best decade is the one they grew up in. I personally like music from all decades and all styles good and bad in all decades, dont think its when a style began, there is more originality especially pre 2000 certainly. I do feel the best music means something whether its love, political whatever, i feel live by Donna Summer to me starts something different to me a more modern electronic feel, but in terms of sound little changed across at least 4 decades. I always think the last year of each decade produces the best music, a new start maybe? Early hip hop was better than later etc Disco got better as it went on. 1982 could be in a number of years and eras for me. Captain and Tennille Love will keep us together could be early 80s not 1975 etc.

I can tell 50s and 60s songs, they have much more harmonies, simplicity in arrangement etc possibly??? they stand out vs 70s and 80s which are much more hard hitting more like surround sound??? i can even tell original sounds and later covers

From Abracadabra to...hey, where's Zoom by the Fat Larry Band? I'm sure you know it's Mickey, not Hey Mickey, so only one appearance is needed. Some reasonable songs missing from your house of fun include Golden Brown, Just An Illusion, A Little Peace, Seven Tears and Love Plus One. Every Breath You Take was definitely 1983 (got to love the B-side Murder by Numbers). I'll still be complaining when I'm old and wise but for now, I'll say hello and wave goodbye.
