He had a fantastic voice for the radio. I remember not being too keen when he initially took over the chart from Tony Blackburn but very quickly warmed to his presentation style and little snippets of information about the artists. And then there was the great music that was around at that time.

I remember listening to Radio 1 at around this time, was decent music and not too inane presenters, I haven't listened to it in years, probably since John Peel died.

M W - I estimated the date from the news stories and I'm pretty sure I looked up what day of the week this program aired at the time.

No, MW. In those days, the new Top 40 was first revealed on a Tuesday lunchtime (so four days before the chart week dating date) and played out on Radio 1 the following Sunday. That's the way it was until September 1987, when the announcement of the new chart moved to a Sunday (4 October ) that year (chart dated w/e 10 Oct)
