Alluka's existence has actually been implied since the debut of Kalluto, with people even being able to fully guess her name before it was stated, due to the naming scheme of the Zoldycks. Each sibling has a 3 syllable name, always with "llu" in the middle; the first syllable is the last syllable of the previous sibling's name, and the last syllable of their name becomes the first syllable of the next. I-llu-mi -> Mi-llu-ki -> Ki-llu-a. However, before Alluka was introduced, Kalluto's name wouldn't properly fit into this pattern. If the last syllable of "Killua" is "A," and the first syllable of "Kalluto" is "Ka," it would imply the existence of another sibling called "Alluka" in between to fit the pattern.

Or at the very least, i feel you wouldn't just go "meh, seen already, NEXT!"...am i in the wrong for thinking that? 8:15 I actually don't think of Meruem's final moments as a "sad" moment, but a bittersweet moment. He dies in the arms of a loved one; perhaps as peaceful an end as a human being can hope for. And it completes his transformation from a monster into a good man. See, for me, THAT character arc supplied the story with contrast. In as much as Chimera Ant is about the human capacity for savagery, it's also about humanity emerging FROM savagery. In that respect, I've come to view it, first and foremost, as an anti-war story, about two groups of people both convinced of their own right to supremacy. And if only everyone was as willing to change as Meruem was, things might have been different. Even the best of us are capable of cruelty, and even the worst of us are capable of compassion. That is the balance I see in Chimera Ant.
@damega6213 жыл бұрын
That is what confused me when he said he liked contrast, because for me Chimera Ants, is the arcs with the mos contrast and the best implemented contrast in the series. I agree with all you say, and Meruem's death is not sad because of what you can remeber (and even so it can be sad just because of that); rather. It was sad because of what it could've been and what he had become, that's why is the saddest moment in the series. I enjoyed the videos though, cause instead of viewing rhem as analysis I just viewed them as commentary so that was okay.

It could actually be argued that Alluka's existence was _very subtly_ hinted at by the names of her brothers. If you put them in order of age, they are Illumi, Milluki, Killua, (Alluka) and Kalluto. There's a trend to the names. The younger one's name starts with the end of the older one, and there's a LLU in the middle. I-LLU-MI MI-LLU-KI KI-LLU-A KA-LLU-TO. But without an A-LLU-KA between Killua and Kalluto, the chain is incomplete!

@@IceAokiji303 Awesome. Also I declare myself as ignorant and don't know the difference between kanji and katakana. Is katakana more like spelling and kanji more for concepts?
@IceAokiji3033 жыл бұрын
@@obedulloa6219 Pretty close yeah! Kanji are the more complex characters that can be used to reference words, parts of words, concepts, and so on, it's the writing system Japan got from China. Each Kanji can be read multiple (or at least 2) ways, depending on how it is used in a sentence or compound word. Hiragana and Katakana then are two additional sets of simpler-looking characters that are original to Japanese. Hiragana are the more rounded-looking ones, usually used for Japanese words, and especially suffixes where just Kanji aren't enough, and they are common as pronunciation aids in media aimed at younger audiences. Katakana are the more simple and sharp-looking ones, and are generally used for loan words or foreign names, as well as onomatopoeia or just wanting to make something look different (I think a few mangaka have made a specific character speak purely in Katakana to show that there's something weird about how they speak, like the character might be a foreigner with odd pronunciation, or a robot or AI or something of the sort). Each character corresponds to a specific spoken sound, usually either just a vowel, or a consonant+vowel (like Killua's name being written with the syllables KI-RU-A), and then there's N as its own thing (as the only consonant that can stand on its own without a following vowel), and a few extra ones that shove an H or Y in between, plus a couple more that either extend a preceding vowel, extend a following consonant, or change the consonant of the syllable it's attached to, like KA becoming GA or TO becoming DO. On the topic of those pronunciation guides I mentioned, those are usually referred to as Furigana. They are either small Hiragana or Katakana attached to the Kanji that they are supposed to clarify the pronunciation of. Some manga authors have some fun with these and give some things a non-standard pronunciation that can send a conflicting message from what the Kanji implies. I think Togashi did something like that with Netero's final words, but can't remember for sure. On that point, with Hunter X Hunter, there's actually something really fun that Togashi does with these (though not with Gon and Killua). Specifically, with the names of Nen abilities. Nen abilities tend to have a name written in Kanji with possibly some Hiragana mixed in if needed, but then the attached Furigana (given in Katakana) give it a totally unusual pronunciation, usually just straight up in English. For example, Hisoka's ability which has the properties of both rubber and gum, when written in Kanji, is 伸縮自在の愛 which should mean "Elastic Love", but the Furigana pronunciation guide attached to it is バンジーガム, "Banjii Gamu" or Bungee Gum. Or Morel's ability, 紫煙機兵隊 ("Purple Haze Soldiers") having the Furigana ディープパープル, "Diipu Paapuru", Deep Purple. And Kurapika's chain abilities all have a Kanji name that is along the lines of "descriptor of what the chain does - which finger the chain is attached to - chain", and then the Furigana giving an English name for it - so for example, 束縛する中指の鎖 "The Restraining Middle Finger Chain", チェーンジェイル "Cheen Jeiru", Chain Jail. Stuff like this is the trend for most Nen abilities we've seen. I just think it's neat how Togashi makes up these weird double names.

One of the things I love most about HxH is how everything thought to be black-and-white, eventually becomes gray in a really subtle fashion: e.g. Hisoka, Chrollo, the Phantom Troupe, Pariston, and Ging should by all rights be considered horrible people morally. Yet the unique and cryptic way in which their stories and personalities are framed makes you oddly fascinated by at least interested in them.
@SennaHawx3 жыл бұрын
I also love how the framing of characters is totally depending on the situation. As you said: The Phantom Troupe show a level of comradery and trust towards each other on a similar level as the Strawhats in One Piece do. Hell...they're mainly thieves (Pirates) aswell, who came together to find a home in meteor city. On the opposite end of that is Netero, who is a bored & passive old man the first time we meet him, with the only thing that gives him joy being battles with extremely formidable opponents. Both physical, aswell as mentally (Pariston). He isn't really that different from Hisoka, except that he is experienced enough to know that there are no/barely any people left in the world strong enough to fight him head on. All of the antagonists in HxH have shown themselves to be able to form strong bonds with other characters. Meanwhile lots of the protagonists constantly struggle with compassion. Some - Killua & Netero at the beginning - were also almost apathetic when it comes to the lives of other humans. I love this manga lol

I was utterly amazed watching your One Piece review series. Your commentary on and analysis of One Piece was well-argued, insightful, nuanced, and in-depth enough that it made me see One Piece in an entirely new light. I have been reading One Piece since 2011, for over half of my entire life now, and after watching your reviews it is an entirely new series to me. With these Hunter x Hunter reviews I just feel none of that. It feels like rather than taking the time to really think-through what Hunter x Hunter is, what it says about Shonen as a genre and how it twists and - at times - elevates its typical tropes, asking yourself *why* it is that this series is so beloved like you so eloquently answered in your One Piece reviews... it feels like you just talked about what interested you, about what you like and didn't like, but without any deeper analysis of the series. It feels like you judge it for what you want it to be, not for what it is. That's fine! I don't even necessarily disagree with most of what you have to criticize about Hunter x Hunter, I think your reasons for disliking parts of it are very well explained. But you spend so much time justifying your dislike that you forget to actually review the story itself, and this video is the extreme of that issue with this series *as review.* I love hearing you talk about how much you love Leorio, because I love Leorio, and because Ging totally deserved way worse. But as other people have VERY justifiably pointed out... you leave out way too much in favor of only talking about what you liked and continuing to defend your opinion on the Chimera Ant arc. The level of investment you have in the story of One Piece vs. Hunter x Hunter is apparent, and I'm not criticizing you for liking one series more than another, I'm criticizing what seems like - from my perspective - letting how much you personally liked a series prevent you from treating a series with the same level of scrutiny and the same brilliance of analysis that you've more than shown yourself capable of.
@JamesFox8493 жыл бұрын
I'm probably too harsh here given my own enjoyment of Hunter x Hunter, but I 100 % will stand by that Hunter x Hunter has just as much nuance and complexity in its narrative, its narrative structure, and in its creative and innovate usage of the shonen genre as a vehicle for telling a story, as One Piece does. I just am failing to grasp here how, even disliking the series, none of that was picked up upon in these reviews.

@rasin93913 жыл бұрын
@@chasepene223 THATS SO NICE I never put it into words so I will do that here just so I can refine my opineon. Sorry but its long! I love Greed Island because of the card system. I think it is very thought out and super fun to think about. This makes rewatching the show a ton more fun since I am rewarded for knowing how well everything sticks together and how well thought out the world is. But thats not the perspective Mark took and thats not how the show advertises itself as in the beginning. From the first 2 arcs I expect a netflix and chill show with a focus on a emotion. I expect it to be like one piece. One piece can be destroyed if you investigate the world too much. But thats just a tradeof for making the show more binge-able. But the in heavens arena this same style of consuming the show suddenly becomes your enemy. NOW you need to understand how Nen works because from now on everything will build on it. If you lay back too much the show will appear super dry and boring. -Why are they talking so much? -Why are there no satisfying fights? -60 episodes for 1 arc and only a handful of relevant fights? Because now everything becomes more like Death note. There are clear rules and those don't always require physical combat. Knowing about those and beeing able to predict characters moves is insanely satisfying to me. It makes the world feel immersive if the characters and the magic stay true to their nature. But ofcourse! Thats the opposite of a show you can watch in your bed with music on or while cooking. To me it came natural since I love card games and I find it incredibly satisfying to see a well thought out story with attention to detail and creative powers. Mark on the otherhand seems to prefer the characters. After all his favourite part of onepiece was water 7. I think he falsely identified Nen as a distraction from Gon who he expected to be at the center of this show. Everything that happened had to do something to bring gon closer to ging. And in my opineon he is not totally wrong. If you only look at the very beginning then the show seems to work this way. Alright so if what I just said is correct then we can perfectly see why he disliked Greed Island. He criticised the arc for having the entire setting be irrelevant and unnecessarily complicated. Why? Because it distracts from Gon and Ging. But why does everyone else love this arc? Because the cards are awesome! It stands on its own. He said there is way to much exposition (setup) and only barely any payoff for for the card aspect. But to the core audience of hxh which love the complex but satisfying systems it establishes the setup itself is the payoff. Thats why we love new character reveals because they got new awesome powers. And thats why so many people love to learn about the cards. In the chimera ant arc this is dialed up to 110%. The narrator injects explanations and consistency into us. Everything makes so much sense. But ofcourse! It has little to do with gon and drags out the story. He completely ignores meleoron and ikalgo in all of his reviews and called them "walking plot conveniences". In the elction arc there is almost no combat anymore and it doesn't stop in the manga. And Mark didn't get any of it.

I feel like one reason why mark feels a lack of enjoyment to this story is due to his big focus on the plot of "Gon finding his father" when the meat of the story is really about the characters, where the goal only serves to carve a way for the character centric storytelling, as ging once said "You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want." While finding ging was a goal, it was never the focus of the story, it is also why some fans are still anticipated about the story's future even though "Gon already found Ging"

The reunion of Gon and Ging effectively skipped. Idk what was going in your life at that time, or what occupied your mind, but I think after you were disappointed in part 2 of the ant arc you shut down and werent rly open to the manga and its underlying motives. I was very excited about this review but maybe I was spoiled by the deep and profound analysis from the absoult genius that is Alexcander. Check out his videos if you want a deeper insight into this manga. It seems to me Mark felt the need to finish this series because it was so highly requested but I honestly doubt he wanted to. Hard to watch at the end.

There was clear signs he had been losing interest all the way back in yorknew. Each review became less in depth with many key parts being omitted. Each review felt more rushed both in terms of script and clearly him reading the story. I feel his philosophy on writing ingrained into him by other Mangas made this hard for him to enjoy due to his preconceived thoughts on how writing should be done. He clearly misunderstood/misinterpreted certain details of the story or flat out read them wrong. I was very upset by this review solely due to the fact he is usually incredibly analytical and perfectly captures the flaws and upsides of most series he reads. He appreciates and notices small details and fully comprehends themes, messages, and characters. However I feel this was a double edged sword because now he is pretty much known for and feels expected to review these stories as such. Overall this review only proved to me he had little interest and decided to simply rush it out the gate simply because he felt obligated at this point.

@@adrianpg4460 Agreed. A lot of it could be done better and all this world building is too much to put in to one or 2 arcs. I believe the constant hiatuses are partly to blame as he can get new ideas in between them and force everything to coalesce into the next chapter he plans to make. It’s better to have it be slowly built up like in one piece. If HxH had enough been done the way something like Magi was, then it’d be a lot more bearable and would make the manga a lot better. I still rate it (HxH) 9/10 but if it were done better like how I mentioned, than I’d put it near One Piece which I have at 9.6/10. I still rate HxH as the third best manga though and Magi just behind it but I think Magi was HxH done right in a way ( for most of the series, but the end was rushed and there were a fair few problems with it and that’s why I rated it a bit lower than HxH. It saddened me when he discredits Meruem's character by saying he was a brief character who played bored games and whatever or something like that. You have to look deeper than that to see his worth and value as a character. Meruem's and Komugi's respective changes and growth through their experience and interactions with each other was most lovely in my opinion. Meruem develops kindness and Komugi starts to slowly fix up her broken self esteem because of his company, this dynamic that they have is what we should be looking into. How delicate Meruem's actions where towards her and how she chose to stay with him till their dying breaths, things like this are what makes their delicate relationship so beautiful. And because it was so brief, that it left so many people truly empty by end of it. What I stated was only surface level so I don't understand how anyone could gloss over this. He also says that the theme and subject was nothing new, not something he hasn't talk about with his friends he says. But that's not what matters, what matters is how it was executed and handled. Chimera ant was a work of art in my opinion. Edit: I don't mean anything bad I truly love love this videos but this was something that really and truly bugged me.

thanks for finishing! I know some people who felt bogged down in the Chimera Ant arc and gave up. I know I had my own issues which were completely different than most people who had issues with that arc but I managed to get through it way back in the day when I first experienced it. It is worth it - hopefully you really felt the same by the end. and the highs (and lows) of the Chairman Election arc are quite exceptional. It was nice to laugh again after the repeated gut punches and horror of the Chimera Ant arc. and it was also nice to cry again in the usual way rather than the soul destroyed way. :) I think a lot of people wanted more analysis of other plots and characters, but I think anyone who has read/watched HxH (especially more than once) keenly are aware that there are so many layers of characters, plot and location in this infinite sandbox of a world that no one can read/watch this once and catch everything. I still catch new things in even just small sequences I have rewatched >30 times let alone the entire show :) You found a couple characters you really connected with (like Gon and Leorio) and really got invested in their stories and analyses. That is great. If you ever have the time, if you truly did enjoy the experience of this story, do try to read/watch it again. it is an interesting construct that actually gets better each time I read/watch it because I pick up something new every single time and it makes me even more amazed at how intricately things are linked together even between arcs that are far apart from each other. The significance of minor plots and characters becomes far more meaningful and rich too. Things that seem like they don't relate at all actually do. And after a few runs through this, you may discover how much more bleak and less interesting the entire piece would be without them.
