That kid had an attitude but he wasn't "being an ass." I am 23, but I understand age discrimination, and see his side. It's really frustrating to feel talked down to, or that you're lesser, simply because you're younger. This kid just needed to learn to communicate in a way that doesn't offend. The problem here is that they were being rude to each other. The cop wanted to prove his authority and the 17 year old one was the first one to start conflict, even though he was simply asking a question. Think of it like this- If you were in a college class, and your professor said something you didn't agree with. You raise your hand to ask for clarification, simply to better understand him. But instead, the professor says that you can't understand because you're young, rude, and delinquent. Then goes on to spend his lecture talking about what an idiot you are. Faced with that conflict, do you think you would be able to keep your composure and explain your point in a respectful way? The cop is wrong to assume that just because he is older and in an authority position he automatically deserves their respect. By law he deserves their cooperation, but that doesn't mean they have to respect him as a person. Give respect to get respect, regardless of age. However, if the kid develops better emotional composure and learns how to manipulate conversation to his advantage he actually could have taught that cop a really valuable lesson. With time it will come!

But when you disrespect someone who has the power to arrest you, you are 100% either a dumbass trying to act hard for no reason at all. He could have not said anything at all and it would have been fine. All the cop said was "Is it ok for him to come to your house and rip up your bushes" and the kid turns it into some age thing when he could have just stayed out of it and let Spencer talk to him. The only people that have it out for police officers are the people that have had a bad experience where they were doing something wrong and the cops caught them.
