I think a lot of people are going to get a lot out of this! Sooo many outdoor brands have been on the ‘outdoor access for all’ bandwagon for the past few years, all while continuing to sell product at a price point that’s largely inaccessible for a lot of the audience they seem to be pandering to. You nailed this video and it’s core concept. I really hope this gets more people outside! Cheers.

Budget camping is how everyone should start! Get outdoors and slowly upgrade the setup as you go. I think sometimes people on youtube think you woke up with a blank check and forget you've been working and gaining income this whole time to upgrade your hobby. It comes with time! looking forward to the next video and thanks for the fire content!

I think the only thing I would change is I'd tell someone to either rent or borrow a tent for that first few times. I'd never recommend spending $20-$30 on a tent that you're going to have to replace very quickly, either because it will fail or because you're going to want to camp a lot and they're just not made for that kind of use. But if a person just HAD to buy something on a budget that they could use that first entire season, I'd probably recommend the $45-$50 2P Ozark Trail tent from Walmart. Then I'd recommend an upgrade for the following year to a higher low-end tent like a Kelty Discovery Trail or Grand Mesa 2 tent in the low $100 range and the other tent can be the loaner tent.

Yep, it's how I started. Wanted to go to a friend's wedding up in the Carolina mountains but couldn't afford the $70+ a night (was planning on staying 5 days) motel, so looked into camping sites and found a nice one, and I found all of my stuff either at the local goodwill or Salvation Army and it worked perfect.

That little bivvy tent...i motorcycle camp...there's a secret formula to easy setup. Leave the deflated pad, sleep bag inside the tent. Pull the poles. Fold in and roll the whole thing up. Tie it. Done. The outer roll is a waterproof tarp anyway. Get to next site...unroll.

This was such a good video- lately I’ve been feeling very uninspired, caught up in the day-to-day routine. But I’m feeling hungry to get back outside, even if it’s in a $20 Walmart tent, and just be in nature for a night. Thank Talon 🙌🏼

So a suggestion for an even cheaper "air" sleeping pad. Head over to the pool accessories and get you a pool float designed for lounging. Usually can get one for 5-10 dollars.

Yeah, often giving a product a different name can increase or decrease the price a bit….a small plastic trash can at Target is 4 dollars, but a similar item labeled as a planter is 10 dollars. Or lights. Call them LED lights, they are x dollars, but call them “Plant/Grow lights” and the same product costs 2x dollars.

My son on his first scouting camp out I refused to buy a bunch of stuff. I bought the chair,tent,head lamp and sleeping bag. He couldn’t have a knife or fire because he had not earned those two scouting privileges yet. He used a yoga mat for under his sleeping bag. He brought a small pot, wooden spoon, a cup and fork from the house. Once he earned the privileges I bought him a knife. He fished and cooked fish every night in tin foil over the fire. When I go camping I bring my mink blanket from Korea, a chair, that Coleman stove,a lantern , a pillow,tent and cooking utensils from the house. Camping doesn’t have to be expensive. One you buy it you have it.

I have the same tent $14 and now use it for gar and to mark my Boondocking spots when I’m off in my very expensive van. I did 40 years of no pad and no chair. I’m quite a bit older than you these days but I remember a time where I could not even afford $30 worth of camping gear! However, both then and even now, I don’t blow money on clothing or going out to eat and stuff like that. It adds up very quickly when you go to McDonald’s five times. Those five times at McDonald’s could get you a cheap tent. Instead, just make your sandwich at home and set your money aside, and before you know it, you will have enough to acquire the equipment you need. Keep going to work and saving your money and again, you will eventually be able to do the van thing or the rooftop camper or whatever. It’s really not fair to criticize people for working hard and saving their money and using whatever gear they want to use. However, it is easy to complain. That said, nothing like minimalist tent camping!

Great video sir! Ramen is a great camp staple, we dress it up a little with some meat and added veggies but still a cheap, filling meal. Totally agree you can camp for "cheap" only issue is when you do it tends to not be very comfy and that turns some people away. Like a lot of people say, camping isn't about surviving is about getting out and "enjoying" the outdoors. All those negative people complaining that because you are being comfortable while you are doing it that it isn't camping, they can suck it.

The problem with that Coleman stove is that there’s no thermal conductive plate. Basically, PV = nRT. Volume is constant, R is a constant for each gas, the temperature reaches an equilibrium. So as the number of moles (n) drops because gas is getting used the pressure ends up dropping, which keeps the equation balanced. The thermal conductive plate basically uses heat from the flame to conduct heat over to the can to keep its temperature higher so that the pressure can stay higher and you can maintain a usable flame for a longer life of the canister. With that stove I found that when the cam was a little less than half full I couldn’t get a flame hot enough to sear a burger. So I was left with a ton of unusable butane. I just ordered a stove WITH the heat conductor

I have a back injury too, which severely limits my ability to do what i once was able to. You should look into exped Max10LW pads, or any variant of that exact pad. They’re incredibly comfortable, you can place them on hard ground and they feel like a tempur pedic mattress. I’ve got two and plan on replacing my current bed in my truck camper with those because of how superior they are to most conventional mattresses.

Really great video. For future videos I wouldn't mind seeing something budget minded that wasn't so restrictive cost wise. Demonstrating how accessible the outdoors can be like this video. Explaining the value of better but not top notch gear and being not quite so minimalist by bringing common items from home like cookware, utensils, bedding.
@AJHart-eg1ys
@AJHart-eg1ys 9 ай бұрын
Yeah. There were definitely areas where substitutions could have been made of things already owned that would have opened up some money to get a better low-end tent. And, as you wrote, there's bedding, a long spoon, and a real pillow, as well as most of us already having a camp chair. If there wasn't a fire restriction, a stove wouldn't have been needed, although you really would want to add a camp kit fairly soon thereafter. But that tent will have to be replaced after only a few times. Maybe the first couple of times, I borrow a tent. Then if it takes, I'd at least go with the Ozark Trail 2P tent ($45-$50) at Walmart. If the current model is made anything like the yellow one I had a dozen years ago, the thing's a freakin' tank. The taffeta rides high on that one, so the ventilation isn't the greatest, but it was bomb proof. There's a reason there's a big price jump from the 1P to the 2P tent, then goes back DOWN for the 3P. Get a low-end shelter you can use a full season, then upgrade to maybe a budget-friendly Kelty the following year for a little north of $100.

All of that gear looks pretty solid the only thing I'd spend more money on is a much longer lasting tent.

This video is so refreshing. There are as many snobs in campgrounds as there are in country clubs! Thank you for proving that it doesn't have to be that way. Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with dropping some cash on high quality gear, but its not mandatory!
