BATUTUMONGA VILLAGE

🇮🇩WAJIK / BAJE’ (BROWN STICKY RICE BAR): Caramelize palm sugar. Add salt, grated coconut and the steamed sticky rice, then mix well. Take the mixture out, wait for it to cool, then shape into bars.
🇮🇩LAPAK (CASSAVA RICE CAKE): Grate cassava and palm sugar. Mix grated cassava with coconut flakes, palm sugar, and white sugar. Wrap in banana leaves and steam for about 10-15 minutes.
🇮🇩ONDE-ONDE (COCONUT RICE BALLS): Grate cassava, then add some salt. Grate coconut and palm sugar. Mix grated cassava with coconut. Shape mixture into balls, wrapping a palm sugar cube inside. Fry for 10-15 minutes.

🇮🇩BUFFALO MEAT & ORGANS: Chop and grind a mixture of red shallots, garlic, smashed and knotted lemongrass, and smashed ginger. Separate internal organs from buffalo and chop up meat. Add buffalo meat to leftover pork stock and let it boil. Add brain and intestines to the pot. Add seasoning spices, MSG, instant beef broth, salt, and vegetables. Allow it to cook for about 2 hours.
🇮🇩BUFFALO BBQ + SAMBAL: Chop buffalo meat, then skewer. Rub meat with MSG. Grill on firewood. Sambal: Grind salt and chili, then add lime juice.

In Indonesia, the left hand is traditionally perceived as the hand used to clean oneself after going to the toilet. When shaking hands, offering a gift, giving or receiving something, eating, pointing or touching someone, among other things, it is considered proper etiquette to only use the right hand. I think it's a good way to eliminate the sorrow over time. In our countries, when someone passes away, we still feel the sorrow even for years. I guess their feel of pain is now bit different because even though that person is dead, the person is in their house. Makes sense.

Seriously. I tried google info about the Torajan people in my mother tongue (swedish) and english. Sonny has covered more about their culture, (more specific: their cermonies around the funeral) in this video than you can find from digging in google in english. It's in one way sad that there isn't more written about their unique culture (in languages I understand), but also that is a testament of what this channel and the team from time to time produces; short educational videos on the HIGHEST level. Even though not in an academic sense but still very admirable and makes a social anthropologist like myself very happy.

@@geekoinfinite2281 Torajan Faith. If someone died but not get his/her funeral yet, he/she will be considered "sick" by the family. They will take care of them as if they're still alive, consider this as a limbo phase for them. When the funeral begin, that's when the person officially declared dead and on the process of passing through the afterlife. The buffalos got slaughtered as a ride for the deceased one in afterlife. The more higher the person's social status and prestige when still alive,the more buffalos needed to get slaughtered. The whole family will take the burden of purchasing the buffalos, it's their duty. If they have insufficient fund, the buffalo owners will give them lifetime loan. This is why there's a phrasing from Torajan "We are already on debt when we are still inside the womb". So if someone wants to marry a torajan, that person have to embrace the debt culture aswell.

Wow. I am from philippines and we have similar delicacies like the steamed cassava wrapped in a banana leaves we called it cassava cake while the sticky rice we called it biko (but instead of grated coconut, we cooked it in coconut milk) of course paired with black coffee perfect combo! . 🥰

Some comments are confused why these people eat some pigs whereas Indonesian are muslim (perhaps you guys are confused with previous videos in this channel , ie : Indonesian ed). FYI, not ALL Indonesian are muslim even though the majority of them are muslim. This ceremony was taken in Toraja tribe village (Sulawesi Island) in which all of them are Cristian, so they do eat pigs etc. Indonesia is very huge country with a lot of Islands/traditions /local languages/ cultures for each region. Even though majority are muslim, but not all of them are muslim. There are 5+ religions in Indonesia : Islam, Cristian, Catholic, Hindu, Budhis, and there are also animism etc.. so it is very diverse

Wow, Sonny! Even I an Indonesian haven't gone there! Great video as always!! Usually, when I ask non-Indonesians about our country, they only know Bali or Jakarta, if the person is Muslim, they will say "Indonesia is a Muslim country", etc. I loved it when people from other countries learned something new and have the curiosity to know more about our culture! What an absolutely spectacular video. I know there are usually a lot of jokes in your content but the sombre tone of this really showed the respect being paid to this unique culture. Got a couple tears out of me, but this was a real fascinating look into the lives of a people so far divorced from what seems normal to me personally, and I really appreciated it. I lived in Jakarta for a year or so before Corona annd tried to get out of town as much as possible, and I'd never even heard of these people, much less learned how they see death, so thanks for opening my eyes.
