Sarah is there a directory for freestyle skateboard tricks or a book that shows the steps to these tricks or is it purely a matter of watching-trying-learning from other skaters and videos. I guess what i'm looking for a trick book with steps that I can take with me and keep referring back to, rather than searching, watching and re-watching youtube videos over and over again... Any advice would be much appreciated!

Some independent books have been published here or there. There are some resources and independent youtubers. Nothing that's really comprehensive. There are so many tricks and so few teachers, we definitely lack there. However, Mike Osterman, Waltz Skateboarding, Freestyle Trick Tips (Tony Gale), Denham Hill have good stuff. Tony has a website too freestyletricktips.com and there is an encyclopedia type resource freestylekb.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page I'd say the good thing is that for a lot of freestyle tricks as you learn the base fundamentals, it does get easier to figure out the harder variations even without tips.

Can you do freestyle on a board that isnt flat?

You can 😃 I like flat decks for it, but there are quite a few people who use boards with more concave or street decks.
