A naturally heavier wrestler should not try to reduce their body weight by artificial methods and fight in a lower weight category against other naturally lower weight wrestlers. If a wrestler who normally weighs 57 kg starves for few days and uses artificial methods to reduce their weight to 50 kg and then take the official weight measurement before the fight in the morning. The actual fight will take place only after many hours. So, after passing the official weight testing, in the few hours before the actual fight they eat and drink a lot and increase their strength and at the time of the actual fight, they will be weighing 55 kg. Then when these bigger 55 kg wrestler fight with the smaller wrestlers who normally weigh 50 kg, it is a disadvantage to the smaller 50 kg wrestler. That is the purpose of this disqualification law.. The 57 kg wrestler should take part only in 57 kg category. 57 kg wrestler should not reduce their weight artificially and take part in 50 kg category. Shekhar Gupta has really half cooked knowledge about Olympics and Sports. He is completely ignorant about Gonzalo Peillat. He left Argentina hockey not by choice but by compulsion due to politics inside Argentina hockey federation and clash with coach and captain when he suggested that Argentina need a change after poor world cup in 2018. But like India, Argentina has dirty politics in federation so they tried to make an example of Peillat. A talented player like Peillat then wanted to play elsewhere and had to wait for 4 years cooling off before playing for Germany. Dirty politics is what sets back countries like Argentina, India etc. It was the normal that there should have trials for 53 kg category between Vinesh and Antim, even if Antim has won quota, but Wrestling Federation politicians who have zero knowledge of sports denied that. Out of desperation, Vinesh had to participate in 50 kg, which needed extreme artificial weight cuts and sadly on day 2 she could not make it as weight was severely cut artificially and nothing more could be done. Also, disqualification was inevitable due to rules which was well known to everyone. Artificially dropping weight is natural but if done to large extent it gives highly unfair advantage hence these rules are very strict

u guys are absolute idiots for thinking that all this saga with vinesh was a conspiracy against her. if anyone is at fault then she is the one to blaim i have been following indian athletes in olympics since 2012 and vinesh lost her bout in 2020 tokyo in 53 kg. excuse given by her was that she was not provided personal trainer, training partners, dietician and physician. then she participated in wrestelers protest and i dont want to divulge in political details as i am strictly talking about sports after the protests she went for the trials for 53 kg indian Wrestling team where she lost to a 19 year old Wrestler 10-0. when she realised that competing in 53 kg bout is impossible for her she blackmailed the Wrestling federation to alllow her for 50kg trial and it being the lighter weight category for vinesh she ease passed the trials. keeping in mind all the political drama by her govt. of india provided her with all the demands she asked from them which even included the cost of her husband being by her side throughout her months of training and a personal trainer, training partners, dietician and physician. she and people close to her knew that it will be a monumental task to keep her under weight for the competetion as her normal weight is near 57 kgs and bajrang punia even accepted this in a statement given to bbc a day prior to her disqualification. now if she was the one of could not keep her weight in check even when she has faced weight related disqualfication prior in 2016 then why is all this drama and fuss created regarding her disqualification. the only reasoning is that it support political agendas

the fact is that she could have made her weight go from 57 to 50 by fasting for a week and keeping diet in check but being an olympic athlete she must be knowing that she will have to participate in bout after weight in and that too 3 bouts in a day for which she must consume some amount of food and water which will eventually make her weight rise which was eventually 2.7kg. and because this time she only had 12 hours to reduce 2.7kg which is very difficult her team was not able to reduce it in time. they themselves said that if they had got a few more hours they would have bought her in check. but the main point is that you can clearly observe that 50 kg is not her natural category and it would have been pretty way easier for her if she would have contested in 53 kg but i guess she herself knew that she will easily lose in that category as she was defeated 10-0 in national trials its pretty simple to speak honestly but people love making a fuss about anything which gain traction

Weight classes are stated to the nearest kg in the uww rules. Therefore using a weighing scale that has a higher resolution may be challenged. ie 50.49kg should be still 50kg. If the uww wanted to measure to the nearest 100g then the rules would need to indicate this by printing 50.0kg and not 50kg. This is a technical issue regarding standards and measurements and thus how many decimal digits to show on weighing scale.

An athlete not being able to play for an established rule is not the end of the world. If a rule is written than it must be known and should be obliged. But, some extraneous conditions lead to re-evaluation of set rules and could be made more fool-proof for future players. Hard luck for Vinesh Phogat this time, could have won a medal for India.

My understanding is that if someone is 51 kg, then that person fights in 53 kg category and doesn’t have to increase the weight but to fight in 50 kg needs to reduce weight. I watched few of your other news articles which were of exceptional quality. Thank you and congratulations. You keep my hopes alive for genuine journalism. Coming back to the topic, I thought about reducing all the hair, but it was of no use She already cut the hair so much and little left. I also calculated how much hair she has now based on scientific survey values of hair weight per average person. The hair she has now will not weigh more than 10 grams Still, she would be 90 gram more. They could have easily drawn 100-gram Blood (100 gram more, if they have already drawn blood and if it was safe to do so) This is allowed but where the team failed is to check one or two hours before going to weigh in process. (or have they?) The team failed to identify this, and they were not very alert. Based on the news articles, she was overweight by 2.7 Kg, and she reduced 2.6 Kg in 12 hours. I really felt for her thinking about what kind of hell she has gone through overnight to shed that weight but the team who needs to provide her full support and to be very vigilant, failed miserably. Total failure of the support staff or some scam that they intentionally let it happen. It is hard to believe that support team at international level genuinely failed to identify the issue and correct it in time or to be alert from the beginning of the competition rather than trying to firefight. I also have doubts on increase in weight from 49.9 Kg to 52.7Kg ( 2.8Kg) that sounds very unreal what is this dietician doing? Given that they were fully aware of the format of the tournament and rules well before start, the team looks incompetent in preparing her for the competition. A very very sad day. My heart goes for the brave lady Vinesh Pogat. This is purely my personal opinion and I tried to make my comments responsibly. Lot more facts may come out in future, if I learn that some of these comments, I made were incorrect, I will apologise and delete my comment.

As always Shekhar is playing dirty by slyly blaming Federation for disqualification of Vinesh, where as the blame is squarely with player and her team. In trying to portray Federation in bad light and by extension bringing politics to it, Shekhar has committed act of omission in reporting and didn't at all mentioned the fact that the precedence of not organising trials before international competition was set by Vinesh and her fellow players when they demanded to be allowed to play in Asian competitions without trial in 2023, undermining up and coming players like Antim. Now that they failed to get the quota even after competing in those games and Antim went and won a quota for India, by what logic can they demand trial for India's olympic berths? On 6-Aug she had 3 bouts. First bout started at 11am and Last bout was around 18:15pm. Wrestlers go for weight cut before weighing and gain weight deliberately before bout. She was below 50kg on 6-Aug at 7am and gained 2.7kg after her last bout on 6-Aug at 18:30pm. It is to be noted that in earlier Olympics weight was taken once. In this Olympic weight was taken on both days. Vinesh's medical team allowed her to gain weight after her weight measure at 7am on 6-Aug. Why didn't the medical team check her weight every hour. How come she gained 2.7 kg between 7am and 18:30pm on 6-Aug. As per Dr. Pardiwala it was very difficult to reduce her weight below 50kg by 7am on 7-Aug. He must tell what diet was given to her. Conspiracy theory cannot be ruled out.

This is quite unfair and unfortunate. In any active sports, weight changes can be extreme. For eg an F1 driver can lose upto 3 kgs. Similar in a Tour de France cycling. Athletes need to fuel up in carbs, electrolytes and water before an event. Imagine if they have to dehydrate themselves before an event to shave off 150 gms? They will collapse midway in the mat. If weight is such an issue, why can’t they be weighed post event? And a tolerance to account for hydration / dehydration be factored in by the IOC? That said, what were our expert nutritionists and sports physiologists upto? Shouldn’t this be on the top of their mind? The athletes mind will be preoccupied in any competitive event. This is their job. India should definitely appeal.

Typically, a professional athlete is not caught for being overweight, and even if they are, they usually manage the situation. If it's not manageable, they declare themselves injured and withdraw from the competition, even with a medal in hand. Weighing isn't like a doping procedure where you must give a sample regardless of your condition. It was the responsibility of Vinesh's management team, including her coach, to declare her injured and withdraw her from the competition if her weight couldn't be managed that day. The silver medal was almost certain. This was a bizarre oversight that not only cost India a definite Olympic medal but also broke the hearts of millions of Indians along with Vinesh's.
