The story of Tonbo Imaging highlights a troubling reality within the Indian Armed Forces. Indian manufacturers often need validation from foreign countries before our own troops can use their products. This issue extends beyond imaging systems to include body armor and ballistic helmets. Despite significant investment in R&D by Indian companies, our products are often only accepted after receiving approval from abroad. This reflects a deeper mentality issue that we must address. It's crucial to change this mindset in our generation, especially as Indian companies are bringing unique and innovative products to the market. We are material manufactures and exports and play a small yet crucial role in the entire defence eco system

This is the way to go in defense production!! This will be a major part of India becoming one of the top 3 powers in the world soon. 2. As regards Indian Army using products only after US Army used it, the matter is very simple- When Indian Army buys foreign maal, there are obvious considerations and benefits. When you order desi maal, the same attractions would certainly not be there!!! Thankfully Modi Govt has issued some negative list for imports blocking unnecessary imports. 3. Have you heard of a concept called offset policy in defence contracts? Whenever India signs any large defence contract with the US or the European country, it is mandatory for a company from that country to provide offset contracts to Indian companies. Earlier the the companies from the US and Europe were reluctant to partner with defence PSUs for the offset contracts. They were willing to partner with private companies for many reasons. Once the government started procuring serious defence items from the private sector, it became a win-win situation for these companies and the country. So, the increase in defence exports is a result of this offset policy.

The main takeaway from this: gone are the days when India produced everything itself, even if only produced a few things. Instead, it is the era of global supply chains-- if you can plug into a production of 500 helicopters and 5000 tanks, you can have a big market to supply to but also potentially buy from, and it could be cheaper if you buy something that is made in large quantity. Efficiency of scale...

S.Korea didn't suffer from decades of draconian wannabe Socialist, wannabe Soviet 'licence raj' type bs policies and started practicing open market capitalism far earlier than us with help of their Western allies(Korea is core US ally India is not like not even today in 2024)

Great analysis! I have a small suggestion though. It can be challenging to follow the discussion without visual aids like graphs, images, or other illustrations. The interview or fireside chat format can be a bit distracting, making it harder for viewers like me to stay engaged. I recommend considering a presentation-style format with more facts and figures instead of the interview approach. Thanks!
