Thanks for sharing this video, Josie! I am reminded of similar cultural norms in some parts of Pakistan - no filming of women, segregation of men and women, women not being able to walk the streets without a male chaperone, women in burqas… Like all other countries, Afghanistan is multifaceted and personally I feel that much has been said (and -importantly- continually said!) about the abuse of women’s rights, a tragedy for not just women but men too and the future of the country. Perhaps not enough is out there celebrating what is lovely and good in the culture. Just wondering - is your guide Hazara?

The second high school I went to in Victoria was in an area which had a large refugee population - mostly afghan refugees. I was lucky enough to go to school with many afghan refugee children, they bravely told their stories, while also still facing racism in another country from peers who don’t understand the differences of the world. I had many close friends, mostly afghan girls. Every year I spent with them we found that we had so much more in common than we could have ever imagined. We found that we were all the same, young girls. I remember being taught about Islam, taught about cultural practices and beliefs. The people from this country are mostly totally beautiful people. Welcoming and loving. One of the many countries to have suffered greatly from terrorist powers.

I wish I could connect with them more too - the fact that I can’t, this is the issue. There are a few female interactions in this that I don’t show their face though. I remember, shortly after the Taliban took over again, an Afghan woman who was days from completing a double degree and her heartbreak that all her hard work 'had been for nothing' as she was forbidden from completing her studies. The helplessness the Afghan women must feel, for themselves and for their daughters, is heartbreaking.

Hi Julie. Afghan men do not equal the Taliban. There are hundreds of ethnic and cultural groups. These men are Hazara, one of the most persecuted by the Taliban. They have a long history of strong family and community units, and centre the woman at the head of the household. The enemy is the Taliban - not Afghan men. Men in Afghanistan run secret schools for girls, are arrested for trying to help them flee. Please don’t conflate the two. The men in Afghanistan are genuinely kind. The Taliban are not.

I'd argue Afghanistan is more progressive than the libs of Los Angeles. Stop with this stereotype that all women in afghanistan are poor, uneducated, and dumb women. This is racist behaviour if you assume that. If you really wanna see that kind of dire situation among women, then go to India, where they have money, they have the GDP, they have the resources, but they are rape capital of the world, both their men and women literacy rate is low, and majority of the cities are dirty. Afghanistan is a trillion times better than India. Even tho Afghanistan just came out a 40 year war against both USSR and USA, yet they are already doing better than a non war torn country like India, even when all the cards are stacked against them.

It's a shame that most of my closest relatives have left since Taliban took over and I have no mahram that I would ideally want to go with. Dear Josie, first of all thank you for this video. The men you have encountered so far were so hospitable and kind. I believe it must have been a wonderful experince and I was really moved when I saw with which ferocity and warmth they spoke about their country. And yet I miss Afghan women's opinions. It seems to me there are too many people speaking about them like what they do and don't want. Yet I think in a situation like this it is absolutely neccessary to hear their voices. I came back from my work. I don't have to cover my face in public, I can talk to people in public. I can marry who I want. I have my own financial income. I feel so torn. I am watching this video and I know women there can not do what I can on a daily basis. It breaks my heart. I believe there are lots of wonderful men in Afghanistan who really care for women and have good relationships with them. But on the other hand there also is and have been stoning of women for adultery. Forcing women into marrying somebody they didn't want to marry. They are denied education and now they can't even talk in public. I believe they must be of a really strong kind, because in such situation I wouldn't last a week. I do not write this out of hatred. I wish for people in Afghanistan both men and women to feel safe and free to do what they enjoy doing. I wish they had more options. I miss voices of Afghan women and their take on this situation and their day to day lives. But I also completely understand you didn't want to push it, I respect completely you didn't want to get yourself nor anyone else into a dangerous situation. I only needed to express what I felt. Josie, this video has truly opened my eyes to what's really happening in Afghanistan. You've shown how complex the situation is, and it needs to be approached with care and compassion. I don't understand why some commenters here seem to see the world in such black-and-white terms. It reminds me of when I was a kid and watched a documentary about WWII. One of the interviewees was an elderly German man who said, "When people think of Germany in WWII, they see us as Nazis, as the destructive force. But they forget that the first victims of the Nazis were the Germans themselves." That statement really struck me and made me realize how we often lump people together, placing them into categories in our minds without considering whether they truly fit the prejudices we hold. What the Taliban has done to Afghan women is horrific, but we often forget that the first victims of the Taliban were ordinary Afghans who didn’t share their views. Labeling all Afghans as supporters of the Taliban is unfair, just as unjust as the Taliban's treatment of women. People keep asking why you don’t speak out against their rule. Those who ask might be too ignorant to understand your situation as a guest in a foreign country or the challenges most Afghans face under the Taliban. Speaking out isn't just about what the Taliban might do to the someone; it's also about the danger posed to their families-their mothers, fathers, and siblings. Being a "social justice keyboard warrior" isn't enough for them to sit on a high horse and tell others to do what they think is right!

This! I've learn't in psychology that our minds group concepts into categories because it's simply easier for our brains to process things in black and white rather than in their nuanced and complex realities. This is how we form concepts like "Women are emotional", "Men are trash", "Africans are poor", "Asians are math smart", "Muslim women are oppressed", "Blacks are athletic", "Americans are loud", "Blondes are dumb" etc.

If you're talking about music, then both men and women aren't allowed to play instruments in Islam, hence why Afghanistan's Govt banned it for everyone, including both the men and women. This "sameness" you're looking for doesn't exist anywhere in the world, even in your UK and US it doesn't exist. So stop looking for this forced equality of men and women everywhere. Hey Josie❤️, and welcome to my country. I am an Afghan woman living here, and it pains me deeply to share the reality of what we’re enduring. I wish I could have met you in Kabul to show you firsthand the struggles Afghan women face every day. Throughout your video, I hoped you would speak to one of us or hear from those who defend us, but our voices remain unheard. Afghan people are kind, resilient, and full of dreams(not Taliban), but the Taliban’s rule has turned our lives into something unrecognizable. Our government has forced its control over every part of us, stripping away our freedom, our voices, and our very identities. The Afghanistan you see today is not the Afghanistan we had before. My beautiful country got destroyed. We are destroyed. 💔 As an Afghan, it feels like being a bird with endless dreams, trapped in a cage. We have no rights, no access to education, no freedom to even walk in the park, visit a salon, or go to the gym. Every day, we live with a sense of loss and isolation, as if the world has abandoned us. I’m dead inside. we are struggling to breathe, struggling to hold on to hope.💔

The way women are treated under Sharia Law has always made me ill. My heart breaks for them. I’ve never thought the people of Afghanistan were the issue. It’s the Taliban Government that is horrifying. With it being illegal for women to speak in public, does that law not apply to foreign women? I was just curious because I didn’t see a lot of talking and interaction. So many seemed like such lovely people.

They can speak, the people they are buying from aren’t Taliban. It’s like anything in life. Illegal when you’re caught. The specific law is about “joy” not just speaking. But of course, joy is subjective. Yes, entire families of men and women. We sat in family sections. You’ll see big families having birthday dinners and kids playing with toys under the tables like any other restaurant. Women seem happy in family units. I can’t speak for them, but I didn’t see happiness anywhere else from them.

This was an amazing documentary!! But there is one question I am left with: if they can be this friendly, nice and lovely to you, and have this much hospitality, why can't they be like that for their own women? It really is a sad reality. Either way, thank you very much for this amazing video. I learned a new side of Afghanistan for sure, a positive one. You are so nice and open to new experiences, and that is very cool to see! Edit: I now understand that I assumed what I stated based on the laws approved there. The laws do not determine how people really are there, it shows how people that are on the top (government) are. I apologise for assuming that the majority of people do not treat women right. And thank you for informing me!

Who told you we aren't nice to our women?
