I was an American Soldier, and spent a year in Baghdad from 2005-2006. Mostly in Karradah, Al-Dora, and Al-Kindi. I watched every minute of this intently, to see if I recognized anything. I spent many days on patrol in the back streets of those neighborhoods. I made many Iraqi friends, some are now here in the U.S. Others are dead, and I miss them dearly. Especially my good friend Ruqqaya Ibrahim, who we called "Sarah", She was one of my interpreters and was fearless on many missions. She died in 2017 and is missed by so many. I was an invader, but the Iraqi people were kind and warm. I cannot take back the reasons why I was there, but I learned much from the Iraqi people and was changed by my experiences. Thank you for this video. It brought back many memories.

I was deployed to Iraq in 2003. I spent the first 5 months in AL Hillah. I was fortunate enough to be able to interact with the local people on a daily basis. I became close with a few of them, but there was a mother and her young son who captured my heart. We didn't speak the same language and most of our communication was done through an interpreter. But they became family. On our last day in AL Hillah she brought her husband and daughters to see me. Her husband gave me a ring that he had been wearing & told me its to remember them.I wore that ring for almost 20 years before the band snapped. I miss my friends dearly & I think about them quite often. I have told everyone for the last 20 years that the people of Iraq are amazing people. They are warm, welcoming, and proud to share their culture. I had so many wonderful experiences in Al Hillah because of the people who lived there, despite the conflict that ravaged the country at that time. I wish someday I can go back. 🤞

I am 70. I am convinced that the people of the world are more alike than not. Yes, we come from different locations, we have different cultures , different biological markers but all that is surface level. What remains in the true human soul. What divides us ...is our leaders. They divide us with fear, lies, hatred, greed and violence. What if we got rid of all governments , each community weed out the trouble makers and we all learn to love and respect each other?

My reaction too. Imagine what would happen to the planet if the decisionmakers were women like Tomas’s guide. No child would go hungry, unhoused, unclothed or unsheltered. There are also issues with the cultures and the people at large, and I can't defend some of those things, but it hurts when animosity between different groups of people is caused by a lack of direct cultural exchange. I am half-Iraqi from Finland and I was in Iraq those very same days, Thomas, for the first time in my life! The drone attack was our first night in Erbil. The North was green and beautiful. I visited Rabban Hormizd monastery close to Baadre the Yezidi town. And Duhok or Nohadra for the Aramaic-speaking Christians. Thank you for the positive coverage of Iraq the cradle of civilization.

This one of the coolest videos I’ve watched in sometime. Beautiful people there. Laughing and having fun. Celebrating a unity! Coming from an American here.. You can genuinely feel the love and gratitude! Blessing to you all!!!
