This is the Swiss Army knife of bikes. It does everything good to exceptional. It does nothing poorly. I bought one and love it. If I could only have one motorcycle for the rest of my life this would be it.

I have a 2017 KTM 500 that has 185.2 hrs - 5117 miles and it is still going like a champ! Just changed the oil yesterday! I should probably do an overview of the things I've done to my bike too. Great video and I'm glad to see you're loving your 500.

330 hours on my 2018 500, with about 8.5k miles. Just checked valves today, they are all still in spec, have never needed adjustment. The bike has been so reliable and dependable. Truly a blast to ride. I take mine down the toughest of single track and keep up or out gun my buddies on 300’s. It’s all in the gearing: 13/52 makes it a low end tractor in the tough stuff, but, does limit your top speed to about 60-65mph unless you are comfortable going more than 1/3 throttle... but I don’t like pushing the beautiful engine.

@@kojack635 I’m 6’2’’ and 280 lbs of muscle and fat, so I’m not sure if that helps with the maneuverability of the 500. But, I also have 3 other guys I know who ride them just as fast as me and they are all skinnier. I think if you have an A class rider on a 300 and an A class rider on a 500 and you guys are in a fast paced/tight enduro (like a hair scramble), then yes the 300 may find some small advantages here and there. But, I’m not an A class rider, and my friends aren’t either. We are good riders, but, we are hobby riders. So, we don’t witness as much of a performance gap on our pleasure rides when we are mixing 2 strokes and 4 strokes. And the 500 can go down the most technical of trails right along with the 300, you just may need to muscle it a little more during that section of trail. I will say, I raced a NETRA hair scramble for my first official race ever. It was a super tight and sloppy loop, we repeated the loop 5 times. The guys on the 125 2 strokes made me feel slow, I was on my 500. So, if you’re planning on riding professional races with tight terrain where every minute matters, a 2 stroke is a no brainer. But, if not, the 500 has much more general versatility, especially if you want to dual sport 50 miles to a trail head and not worry about towing the bike everywhere. I also view the added muscle needed at times to maneuver through the tight stuff as an added workout. A benefit in my eyes. I have absolutely no regrets buying my 500. Check out my KZbin channel and you’ll see the stuff I bring it down. (Side note) I’ve never ridden a modern 2 stroke, offroad. I’ve only putted around on my buddies 300 for 5 minutes one time. Besides that, I might not realize just how much lighter they are at speed on trails. I’m just going by visual capability comparison. And my 500 keeps right up with the 2 strokes for sure.

Brilliant real world review. The 500 is a top bike and so many people are put off because they think they need to change the oil every 10 minutes. I have met guys in the USA who never change oil before 1,500 miles, sometimes longer and have serious thousands of miles on the clock. One guy, I think he is called RTW Paul, (might not be correct name but he is an Aussie or Kiwi) did over 90,000 kms on a 500 before he did a precautionary engine rebuild and he did oil changes every 1,500 to 2,000 Kms! Trail/adventure riding and racing are two different things.

That Giant loop Mojavi should do anyone for two or three day rides. Small tank bag , Back pack. I look at your videos and I enjoy very much thankyou. I’m 65 and traveled Europe, USA, Asia, Australia,NZ on a motorcycle on all surfaces. I use to pack a fair bit at the start of my motorcycle life. You riders of today carry way to much Unnecessary stuff. Sorry but you just don’t require it.😄 Pack smart chap. Tip pack then half it! Ask yourself when you lay out all the gear you want to take, When was the last time I used that. Is it really necessary! 😉 I’m drinking a shandy as I speak so please forgive my forward ness . God bless. Nice looking bike Keith.

Update, I have installed the Impact Moto Pegs from Fasst, and then tried the SPURZ Dirt Bike Foot Pegs. I found the second to offer some vibration damping in the pegs. I think this vibration is just part of the European bikes. The Japanese bikes, like my old XR35R or XR400R had very little vibration. One does grow accustomed to the vibration and I find that resting my arches on the peg on long rides helps. Either way, I have grown to appreciate my 2022 KTM500 EXC F so very much. She is really so good at everything! My wife recently picked up a 2020 Husqvarna FE350s, with a GET ECU, smog delete and Pro moto Billet exhaust tip. It's every bit as fast as my stock, corked 500, but just does not have the torque. She got tired of stalling it in more challenging trails and we installed the Reckluse Auto clutch. While this solves the stalling issue for her, it has it's down side as well.

I just got a brand new Tenere 700 Rally. If I told you I wanted to do 80% road, and 20% offroad, would you recommend the 500EXC-F? What if I told you I wanted to do the 20% offroad with 110% confidence, and a smile on my face and wanted to try routes that I'd normally not dare? I think your justification will help me a lot on keeping or selling my T7. I'm talking about light to medium offroad by the way. I'm too old to jump off boulders at 55. Or should I rather go for the KTM690 Enduro R with more offroad tires? I'm sure that the T7 is a lot more safer at going higher speeds on the asphalt, twisties, etc. But I'm not crazy about high speeds and peg scraping. I do like a comfortable seat but can't say the T7 has a luxury sofa on it either.
@keithjob
@keithjob 2 жыл бұрын
For 80/20 on/offroad I'd say the T7 would be fine. The 690 is about 45kg lighter than the T7, so possibly more confidence-inspiring offroad. But you own the T7, so I'd stick with that! The 500 is not a 80/20 on/offroad bike, more like 20/80.

If your gonna ride to work a lot and spend 50% of your time on the street and in traffic- You should strongly consider the Honda. You never want to rack-up useless street miles on a race-bike. Also- you will probably drive by a dozen Honda dealers before you find a KTM/Husky dealer. Getting a part immediately can be an issue.

Both are not as good as the 690, and non of those are as good off road as the 500 (essentially a dirt bike with street lights). The 690 and 650s defiantly have road use in mind. I guess it depends on what type of rider you are. If you are more laid back then maybe the dr or cr650 will be better. If you are a fast boy, you might find the 690 attractive. If you want to dominate the trails off road, then the 500 would be the best option.

I'm in the same pickle... I thought I'd get a WR250 as a do-everything bike. And while that will never be achievable, the KTM 500 is probably a damn good choice. The WR is just a touch too heavy and waaay underpowered. It commutes fine if you don't need to go over 60mph. It'll do 80/85 but above 60 just taxes that poor engine. I got a YZ250 and the weight is perfect, power is kinda scary, but it's never going to be a commuter. KTM 500 from what I hear is controllable like the WR down low, but raunchy like a 450 up top. Has a 6 speed, gets 45/50mpg and has hydraulic clutch. Solid setup for sure.

My '17 has been a great bike for over 4K miles, except for the tall gearing, crap headlight, and strangulation by carbon nazi edict. I've uncorked & tuned many bikes (mostly KTMs), but I never seen gains like the 500. Feels like a different bike, moving from ~38 hp stock, up to 52-54 hp. You think it eats tires now? Last dirt trip, I had a new KLX300 along with the 500, and rode the KLX 90% of the time, mostly mountain gravel & trail. Maybe KTM should look at something to compete against it and the 300 Honda...trail bikes that aren't 38" tall, but still pretty capable. ;)

So, are you saying you like the klx300 more than your ktm 500?
@petermccann2561
@petermccann2561 3 жыл бұрын
@@kojack635 Depends on what I'm riding, and who I'm riding with. Want ultimate performance, with power to spare? KTM. Want more comfortable, lower seat, softer, less vibe for cruising trails & gravel at non-break neck speeds? KLX300 fits the bill for me. No bike is perfect, including the KLX. There is no "do it all" bike. I find the KLX will do gravel & easier trails well, if I don't exceed its' limits too much. The 500 is too much for most mere mortals, especially uncorked & tuned. I really don't need 100 mph+ capability in a dirt bike, and if your prone to whisky throttle, you can be in a world of hurt, quickly. The faster the bike, the less you notice all that beautiful scenery you traveled so far to enjoy. I wish KTM would build a bike with similar seat height, travel, and wheel base, to the KLX, preferably with even better suspension, decent oil change intervals, and maybe 40-60 lbs lighter. I think they would sell a ton of them. They lowered some of the Husky line (by ~.4", IIRC), but it's too little on a 38" seat height bike, and with the wheel base, you can't lower very much, without creating ground clearance/breakover angle issues. It's all about finding the right trade offs, for the way you plan to use the bike. The KTM is much more expensive, so it must meet higher performance and durability. I have crashed the KLX twice in 600 miles, and it's taken more damage than the 500 has in ~3 years, albeit minor (mirror, blinker, foot peg bracket). Yesterdays' high side ripped the right rear signal pod off its' stalk, but it looks like I can pull it apart, plug the wires back in, and mount it back on the stalk. :)
