Yeah a lot people like to knock Namath that he is in the HOF. However he was the first to throw for 4,000 yards(in a 14 game season no less) and he played in an era where guys like Ben Davidson we’re ripping quarterback heads off, he broke Namath‘s jaw and Namath went back and showed no fear.

Are people really saying that Joe Namath is overrated ? People need to go back and realize exactly what he did for the sport of football: Joe Namath was the first quarterback to pass for over 4000 yards in a season, oh, and he was the first AFL quarterback to beat an NFL team in the super bowl at super bowl III. Had the jets not won super bowl III there wouldn't have been a merger. The man made HISTORY. Stats can also be misleading, Joe Namath was a damn good quarterback during his era. First one to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season. The reason why Namath has more interceptions than touchdowns because back then you could choke out a receiver before he has the chance to catch the ball. In today's NFL, you can't touch a receiver beyond 5 yards.

Namath and Unitas threw old footballs before the NFL introduced the Ultra Pebble design in 1981. After that, all the passing and receiving records began to fall, and even mediocre quarterbacks with poor form began throwing for 400 yards in games. Also, they played with the slick white-striped night game balls from 1956 through 1976. They were much tougher to throw and catch. Furthermore, in those days the quarterbacks and receivers were not protected from being body-slammed each game. Namath didn't have as many touchdown passes because his coach didn't like him throwing near the goal line. Namath and Unitas were the Larry and Magic of the 1960s.

Overrated ???. Think about this: Vince Lombardi, John Madden and Bill Walsh all said he was the greatest "pure passer" the game ever saw. Bill Walsh: "Had he had an injury free career, he would have been the guy with all the passing records, not Brett Favre". In 1967 he threw for 4000 yards. This was not broken until 1981 and a 16 game schedule. From 1967 until 1980, 13 full seasons, there were only 10 games in which a QB passed for 400 or more yards. Namath was the QB in 3 of them. Remember it is the HALL OF FAME, not the Hall of Statistics. Namath brought more "fame" to the game of professional football than just about anyone before or since. Anyone old enough to have seen his style of play understands he belongs in the HOF.

Bear Bryant said that Joe Namath was the greatest athlete he ever saw. As a freshmen at Alabama, Namath practiced with the punt return unit. He played the role of the punter because he could throw the ball 80+ yards with over 5 seconds of hang time. He was severely limited his entire pro career because of recurring knee injuries, he should be much higher on this list. He is responsible for higher wages for players and the successful merger of the AFL and NFL. If it was the Pro Football Hall of Stats then Cornelius Bennett, Cliff Branch, Roger Craig, and a host of other great players would be in.

People also forget how much punishment quarterbacks took at that time. These guys got tagged routinely after the pass. But in terms of raw skill, there is no argument that Namath was one of the best. Just imagine if Montana or Brady took the licks that Namath did in the pocket.

Most people don't know that Joe didn't pass the ball one time during the forth quarter of Super Bowl III, and he called all the plays. Does anyone doubt he could have passed for a few yard late in that game? He wasn't interested on looking good on the stat sheet, only in winning the game and whatever was the best way to do that, they couldn't stop the run, so he kept feeding the rock to Matt and Emerson. That is why he was the MVP of the game, it was the use of his brain that lead to that trophy.

To those who feel Joe is not a Hall of Famer; Joe changed the game, had perfect passing mechanics that influenced a generation of QBs to follow. If Jets lose to the Colts in Super Bowl 3, most of which Joe called from the line of scrimmage, would there be a Super Bowl 4 and what has practically become a national holiday celebrated annually? NFL was already suggesting that the AFL was inferior and games between the leagues were futile. Joe was also responsible for players finally making their worth, respectable contracts. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

To everyone complaining about ranking in every video, SHUSH! Just think of top 100 as a close tie for first among players dispersed among nearly a century's worth of seasons. Only interesting arguments are about those unfairly left off the list, but it's so annoying to see every video thread lead with a "too low" (or occasional "too high") comment. You can't win the argument. It comes down to emotions and cherry picking facts when arguing about placement of the players on this list. Players are honored as the best ever merely by being in the top 100. If commenters want to keep it interesting, rather than irritating, ask who is not in the elite 100 who deserves to be.

OK, here are 2 automatic winning bar bets: 1-Who was added to the Jets as new quarterbacks during the 1965 draft? Joe Namath, John Huarte(Notre Dame) and Cosmo Iacavazzi(Princeton) who played fullback but also quarterback in the option. 2-Houston Rockets picked Hall of Famer Akeem Olajuwon as 1st pick. Why was this a mistake? (Because a few picks down was one Michael Jordan, who would've fit in with Ralph Sampson, the giant center they already had.)

You have to consider the rest of the team. If the offensive line is weak, what is the quarterback to do? He has to get rid of the ball quickly, and that is what Broadway Joe did. He got the most out of his playing time. Don Meredith was in a similar position. Even with Bob Hayes, the fastest man on Earth, Dandy Don often did not have enough time to get off a long pass to Bullet Bob. Hayes was often far downfield of the defenders, but stopped running, because Meredith got sacked or was forced out of the pocket.

Aging Baby Boomer and native NY'ER here Joe Namath was to American football what Muhammad Ali was to boxing. End of discussion. And he played with two bad legs on some not so good NY Jets teams. He had a release like no one before him and maybe Dan Marino's was just as quick. Broadway Joe and Walt "Clyde" Frazier of the Knicks owned NYC and no two athletes were EVER cooler.
