$100/Kwh LiFePO4 Battery Modules
I bought 12 battery modules from Battery Hookup. Each module is 8s, I'll be connecting 2 in series to make a 48 volt battery bank for my off-grid solar system.
This is a first look at the battery. How the cells are arranged in the pack. They look like they were built to handle some serious amps.
I have not done a capacity test yet, but they will probably be around 4.5 kwh per module.

Wow, nice score! (No wonder the things sold out so fast! You did good by jumping on that opportunity immediately!) Just so ya know: When equipment like this is installed in a data center, the fans face out the back of the rack. This is called the "hot aisle/cold aisle" layout. (I think you may have front and back swapped.) Two rows of racks are arranged back-to-back, so all the hot air goes into the space between. The air-handling system can scavenge the hot air from the back of the machines and dump cold air to the front of the machines. The human operators mainly keep to the "cold aisle" in front of the machines where all the buttons and lights are. Wiring and connections are mostly in the "hot aisle" to keep them safe and tidy. (Not saying you have to run things this way -- you do you.) Are you going to use equipment cabinets, or roll your own? Can't wait to see what you figure out with the BMS situation! More power!

@@DavidPozEnergy I have an idea, you could use some sort of metal cable clamp on them, instead of cable you clamp onto the post. Then use the clamp mounting hole to attach the power cable, using a nut/bolt.

Amazing deal, good call buying that many. Those bus bars are super, the whole setup looks great, best deal I have seen even better then we got on the Ford Energi C-Max unit(s). We are right at 100 USD per kWh too but these look nicer overall.

I took a look at your system. The Sol-Ark looks like an amazing machine. It seems like it can do everything. I'm surprised you didn't buy more of the Sol-Ark batteries, I think they are AGM, right? As for my BMS, I think I will try the Chargery 16s BMS.

@@DavidPozEnergy Not that I didn't think about the Sol-Ark batteries but they were $700 each they are partial charge carbon. The hookup ones were a much better deal. Just have to work out the BMS for them. They will be added in parallel to the Sol-Ark ones. The Sol-Ark system is very flexible, they just came out with a 12Kw unit.

I just bought 6 and got 5% off by getting on their email list. Wife is gonna kill me Dave! I’m gonna augment the set of 800ah lifepo4 in the Philippines later with these. Meantime I will hook up my massive 15kw powerjack to my current house as grid tie and let the grid charge these and see if there is any difference in the light bill with the inverter efficiency mods when on battery power for 12 hours a day. May put up the windmill later. Had planned on topping out a very tall pine tree and putting it up there but the tallest snorkel lift wouldn’t reach so a tree service said their crane could help me out. Heat sinks and fan seems excessive considering my brand new batts never heat up even 1 degree charging or even when discharging a 4.2kw event shower heater, rice cooker, electric vehicles and Hvac all at once. Cheap Chinese lifepo4 batts at that. The more time go by the more charging cycles folks suspect lifepo4 batts are capable of. I think the number of cycles they publish are just being conservative. They could be in excess of 10,000 cycles if your sensible with them. If you run them dead dead for 2000 cycles then that’s probably end game tho.

Yes, I felt really bad for my van. I didn't know how much they weighed when I went down there. I had done a back of napkin calc assuming 120 pounds each. LOL. @@BenMitro in renewable energy, we dont express battery capacity in Kwh...because wattage goes down as voltage goes down....however you can have a constant amperage draw till your batteries are drained....thats why

@@t00ls742 kind of. Except that amperage goes up as voltage goes down because your load is a constant wattage draw. These modules are originally listed as 5.4-5.65 KWh. There is nothing wrong with describing a battery in KWh capacity.

4:33 I wouldn't call that a bus bar. I would call it a fixed jumper. Bus bars usually allow for multiple connections but that appears to just be a jumper from one subbank of cells to the next subbank.

@@DavidPozEnergy More than likely either the; electromagnetic radiation, caustic fumes, or perhaps accidental electrocution has affected David James in calling this a fixed jumper (sorry Dave). As an EE, any device that carries a high current load would use a solid high conductive metal connection between electrical junctions such as these to connect between batteries. This is called a 'Buss Bar' not a 'Fixed Jumper' which would allude to an EE that it is connected via an actual wire but because of the high amperage a solid core flat metal would be used as shown in this device. Where a (solid or stranded core wire) renders it a design flaw and electrical hazard due to the fact the electrical atoms (pos & neg) travel outside of a wire so available surface area is nominal that caused heat and over time failure of the connection itself. One would have to have a very large wire gage to equal the Amp carrying capacity of a solid buss bar versus a fixed (wire) jumper. However, there are exceptions and those vary from manufacture to manufacture in naming these devices just to make it more confusing and the fact to save on production costs and increase profits use of wire for a buss bar is readily used in the industry - just a way of saving money for the company and not the end user. It is common to see Buss Bar's being replaced with 'Jumper Wire' both stranded and solid core both in high end and low end consumer grade equipment. In industrial equipment you will see these 'Solid Metal Buss Bars'. Unfortunately, in this day and age increasing profits is the norm and what was once looked upon as ineffective or dangerous has now become acceptable design considerations with the risk they may impose by mitigating this risk with added fuses and other fail safe measures. We see this all the time with new buzz words (in reality old words) to make it sound like the newest high tech solution and thanks to the marketing department of the company, justify its design inefficiency to the user. This becomes apparent when reading the products data sheet and/or lack of proper information in the data sheet. Best advice I can give you is check your connections are they the best way to connect this device? Are they solid mechanically? Wear and tear possibility? Corrosion? Safe? Is this the best way to make this type of connection? Remember the path to least resistance for failure is you connections. Be safe, do it the right way and with quality equipment... I just bought some lifepo4 batteries built into a power station and they are awesome. its 4 kwh of battery and 4000 watts continuous 110 vac power for backup power when the power shuts off.. it ran a air compressor intermittently for 3 or 4 hours when we were installing siding... so far it performed as expected..

@@DavidPozEnergy Yes, I generally have Les Schwab do a free inspection, because it is a safety issue. They will tell you if something bent or failed. I consume 50 kwh a day, so 2 days worth of power. This includes all electric heatpump HVAC, Heat pump water heater, led lights inside out, security systems, I tested enphase micro inverters for grid tie setup as majority of people, but I think offgrid system are superior. Your inverter setup is good, but as you mentioned you are planning to upgrade to better efficiency inverter, I would recommend trace sw4024 or SW4048 with 93 or 94 percent efficiency. They can be connected together to give you 8kw of 240v setup. You just have to search on craigslist. I only paid 600 each so 1200 for 2 of those.

@@jollygreen4662 I hope not, but I just got mine a few weeks ago. I wish I would have waited to see this deal. If you oversize it, you can use like 15%-20% of you capacity so it will last longer. I just cooked, dried clothes and turned the water heater on with 81% battery left for the rest of the night. Definitely oversize as much as possible.

....thinking out loud, if you paralleled those with your Chevy Volt battery, you could charge to 49.2 V (4.1V per cell for the Volt) and your LiFePO4 would be at 3.075 ---- then discharge the Volt to 42 V (3.5V per cell) which would put the LiFePo4 at 2.625 Should work out just fine :-)

Late to the party I guess. Just bought some of the BYD packs from the bottom of the barrel. Each has a bad cell, listed that way from battery hookup. I've watched a number of people take them apart and rebuild them. That was my intent here for these 4 packs I bought.

I have 4 Kilovault LiFePO4 12v batteries that only weigh about 40 lb each vs 80 lb for equivalent lead acid. But, the batteries need to be at an equal initial voltage or they shut down. I got them to work for several weeks then the system shut down. I checked the voltages. One was way negative of the others. Charged them up again with battery charger. Turned on my little electric heater. Not long after they screwed up again. Then Iater I tried charging my hybrid car which was showing it was only drawing 1k watts on the solar system monitor. The batteries did the same thing again. I'm using an Outback Mate3 and the 3 lights at the top have never shown the batteries were even half discharged. I think I've developed a better way to check the batteries for equal charge. The mate3 says my charge controller and inverter are working OK.

The charger for my car says theirs a fault in the cord I used to initially charge the solar batteries. Next time I charge them I'll use my new cord plugged directly into the wall socket. What do u want me to tell u about the Kilovault batteries. They say they have their own BMS sensors and not to use a separate temperature sensor. No, I'm not on FB. They stop me at the door when they want u to sign in just to look at their site.

You should use a BMS with any lithium batteries to keep from over amp in or getting too hot or too cold and for safety.

According to a spec sheet I found, if we can get a one of the master BMU units, it should talk native CAN bus to a Victron GX module. (Color control or Venus, or similar) David, can you post any model numbers you can find off the unit? I'll do some googling around. (I already placed an email order for 3 for my Skoolie and hopefully can go pick them up from Besalem next weekend.)

The battery is Model: ABSSM. I have e-mailed BYD, and sent them a message through facebook. No response on either. I was trying to get a spec sheet for the cells. Specifically I wanted to find out voltage for 95%SOC and voltage for 20%SOC. So that I can program my charge controller and inverter.

one bldc ebike motor one 350 amps alternator one stacked casing containing one large gear and on small gear. then one very large transformer. now it has eight plugs per unit that runs on less then one 120 volts and 20 amps socket. the whole thing would fit in one case of those lithium ion batteries. just patenting it open source then dumping on wiki could make you really famous.

This is why Lithium systems use BMS units to protect them. Benefits outweigh that though. like 90% depth of discharge (vs 50% for SLA), greater discharge and charge rates. (You try a .5c charge rate on those SLA, dare ya. or a 3C discharge.) Oh yeah and about 10% of the weight of equivalent SLA.

Yes. I will be mounting an aftermarket BMS on the pack. The eventual goal will be installing shunt-trip breakers so the BMS can open the circuit to the battery. Plenty more videos to come.

So the BMS is likely just a balance board, and info gathering board for the main control board that makes the decision for the group ? As for over/under volt, cell and pack, also likely multiple temperature sensors, I'd like to have about 12-20 if those, enough to power a 5kw inverter for 72+ hours, at about 1/2 power, so at a average of 1/10 power it should last about a week+ longer with some sun on cloudy weeks, I might get 50-100 watts on cloudy days, if I'm lucky, for about 4-5 hours, but I'm looking into building a micro hydroelectric generator, to start it will be designed to charge the lithium ion batteries, to about 80% and hold them, and power the inverter, I hope to get or build a charger that will charge with the cc cv lithium charging algorithm, charge to a set voltage, and dis connect, or charge to about 80%, and have full current available to power loads, lithium does not live long at full voltage, they are not designed to be held at fu charge voltage , test have shown it can lead to approx, 0.1% capacity loss per cycle, when charged like this, I'm staying between 3.0 & 4.0v lor liion. 2.8 & 3.4v for LiFePo4, and hopefully they will last for 20 years, then I'll buy what ever is the "thing" to have then! Or if only 5-10 years, I'm thinking about 10 kwh of LTO cells, to replace my 7s liion, maybe 11s, 12s LTO, cells.. maybe I'll go 48v, and 22s LTO cells, they should last forever!! A 10-15 kwh should be fine, especially if the hydroelectric does about 1Kw, and I get about 2.5kw more solar, I could probably get by with hydro only, with 2kw of solar, but I feel safer with about 4.5kwof solar and hydro power, I have missed all the big batt packs lately!! I been looking into the C-MAX ev batts, building battery packs is getting old!! All the charging discharging, testing capacity, matching to put in packs! Then the work starts, actually making connections!! But I'm fully off grid, and need the power!!

Hi James, You might be able to help me here? I'm trying to nail down my charge/discharge voltages. For example, with my Chevy Volt pack I used 4.05v/c (volts per cell) for charging, and 3.50v/c for discharging. I thought that made the most sense for capacity vs. cycle life. But these are 3.2v nominal. The literature I find says 0%-100% is 2.5v/c to 3.65v/c. Do you have any suggestions on what set voltages would be good for perhaps a 20%SOC and 95%SOC?

Bmv712, the mppt 250/100 from victron, you select the lifepo4 settings on the charger and use the active ballancer for the upperbalance on the cells(3,55v as the charger is set for absorb.) Than start the discharge till the weakest cell reach let's say...3,05.I find this safer. Then check the ah consumed on the bmv and you that nr. write it down in the bmv.712 on the capacity settings. And you're good to go. I would recomand a 48v system 2s6p in your case. Hope it helps.

so you'll have 1320 Ah of power.....thats not bad in renewable energy, we dont express battery capacity in Kwh...because wattage goes down as voltage goes down....however you can have a constant amperage draw till your batteries are drained....thats why and 1320 is a good amount of storage.....should be able to get 2 days use with no input using minimal power

Yes, they are used, and then sat a while. The guys at Battery Hookup said they had to cycle them a bit to "wake them up". Theses ones have not been cycled by Battery Hookup so I'll have to do it in some upcoming videos. Lots to do to get these things ready.

First, is any cell at 0 volts? These weren't even after being in storage. Second, if you charge them up and then wait, do any loose voltage? If so they would be self-discharging and bad. Last would be doing a capacity test. There are probably more scientific ways then that, but those are the things I check for.

@@DavidPozEnergy Thanks David. I'll give them a call tomorrow. I'd probably avoid the Leaf batteries. They are lithium-manganese-oxide which have a very short cycle life as far as lithium batteries go. They are only rated for 400-600 cycles when new, and those are pretty well used up. They'd probably go downhill quickly. I suspect these LiFePO4 batteries have 1000 - 2000 cycles left in them before they become unusable. Seems like a better deal to me. EDIT: Just noticed a few comments about bad modules and some very weak cells. Maybe I'll steer clear of all of these used BYD packs and just go with building my own from new Liitokala cells.

Hi Salvador, thanks for checking out my channel. I don't recommend these batteries. They turned out to be more of a nuisance. I spent a lot of time trying to get them to work perfect, but constantly required my time to balance. I have taken these cells out of service. If you are trying to build your own, I'd use better cells. Use a 16s BMS, with LiFePO4 cells. That means 16 cells in series, and the exact chemistry of the battery is Lithium Iron Phosphate. This is a great way to make your first battery: batteryhookup.com/products/new-battery-hookup-lifep04-32650-3-2v-5000mah-cells-1 This kit comes with 4 cell modules. You would need 4 kits to have 16 cell modules total. Those arranged in series would give you 16s, for a perfect 48V battery. Then you need to add a 16s BMS.
