David Atkinson - LIFE MATTERS

Күн бұрын

I've listened to these records more than 100 times each. And there's a few more (not too many more though).
This is in response to a completion from ‪@RandallWeaver‬ (see his channel, and maybe subscribe too). Inspired by the greedy effort from ‪@robwalkerletthemusicplay‬ (only joking, Rob).

The Smiths 'The Queen is Dead' and Simple Minds 'Once upon a time' are just a couple of mine that i must of listened to over 100 times.

Great stuff David. I’m thinking of doing this, but ultimately it would boil down to albums I owned between 11-15 when I didn’t have as many albums so Im sort of conflicted with it! The Blue Nile are finally about to go huge as Taylor Swift mentions ‘Downtown Lights’ on her latest album. I showed that Prefab on my best albums of 1990 video. ‘Eagle’ by Abba is one of their greats. I’m going to start making a list!

Nice overview David! I actually broke out King of America the other day - had not played that in some time. This was a fun thread to enter from Randy. 😎

I bought my first album “blind” as a 12year-old. Moontan by Golden Earring. From the old indoor market, what was then in the Bull Ring in Birmingham. Loved that album. Still do. But I doubt if I even listened to that one 100 times? Maybe… Just too much music, too short a lifetime, I suppose. I have some albums I still did not listen to once! I will definitely check out a couple of the ones on your list Dave, you have mentioned them all before at some point. For sure some great choices. Cheers and all the best, hope your back is 100% good again now.

"The radio's playin' some forgotten song, Brenda Lee's "Coming On Strong"" WHAT a classic. I've still got albums I haven't listened to yet, despite them being on the shelves for years. But the core of my collection has got a hammering over the years. It helps when you barely watch any TV. Cheers for the good wishes Mike. My back (apparently) is 'recovered', but it'll take several months to heal properly. Taking care is my new manifesto. 😇

@@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 First time I ever heard Radar Love was when I first took it home and played that album, it blew me away. That’s what was so magical in those days, the joy of discovery, before the internet and all that. Rest of the album is top-notch too. That kind of, is it hard rock, is it prog rock, even a bit folky in parts kind of special soup. I would recommend it to anyone. Some of my favourite albums to this day were blind purchases. Often because I liked the cover art. Great news Dave and yes, DO take care!

Great video totally agree re-tangerine dream - I think ricochet is an underappreciated gem many best of list it behind many other albums that didn't reach these heights. Quichotte or Pergamon I think is up there too these are my interchangeable 1&2 TD albums

That was a great list David. I think you're the first person to show any orchestral music; I'm going to stream that Saint-Saëns organ concerto. I think. If I can find it. Cool deep find with Brand X too - I used to have that album, but it's long gone now. Nice late-stage Dylan pick too. I need to revisit a couple of Simple Minds records, but I don't have the one you showed. I really enjoyed the response. Thanks for jumping in - your video is added to the playlist!

Cheers Randall. I enjoyed doing this one. If you're keen to find that Saint Saens symphony, let me hint that I've listened to (and own) just about every released version there is, and this one conducted by Daniel Barenboim is the one to go for. It's a notoriously difficult symphony to get right and many fail. This one has an essential coherence in the final movement, and the organ sound is to die for. That final movement is immediately striking, but the first three movements take time to get into. Everything sounds wonderful if you give it time. Like a lot of classical music, the more you put into it (via concentrated listening) the more you will get out of it.

@@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 I'm listening to a version by Berlin Philharmonic directed by Karajan right now. I'm about 8 minutes in but haven't heard an organ yet! lol I'll look for the Barenboim version. Thanks for the follow-up!
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826

@@RandallWeaver Ha ha. The Karajan one isn't the best, and the Chicago/Barenboim one beats it comfortably. I forgot to mention that the organ doesn't come in until the second movement (where it's very subtle). It definitely shows up in the fourth movement where it requires listeners to turn everything up to 11. 😅

I couldn’t do rsd because i had work. The only thing i would have liked to get was the Apocalyptica album only because i want to give it to one of my friends who is a huge fan. As for me, I’ve listened to Pink Floyds Animals, Wish You Were Here, and Opeths Ghost Reveries countless times. Other than that, I’ve listened to the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No 2 and 3 so many times. That piece is perfection in my eyes. Some of these albums you mentioned I’ve actually never heard before, so I’ll have to check them out!

“Let’s get the obvious candidates out of the way first” 😆 I saw Dylan on the Time Out Of Mind tour in Toronto over 20 years ago now. I have a copy of that Blue Nile but on compact disc. What do you think of Mike Oldfield’s cover of ABBA’s Arrival on his QE2 album? Full agreement with you on Ommadawn. I love all 5 Police albums. I have that Genesis Live and it’s just as you say. The Knife! I have that Simple Minds 12” among many others. Saw them on the Sparkle in The Rain tour in my high school days. I love that Frankie release and still have my original copy from those days. ✌️

Cheers Mike. I always thought Oldfield's version of 'Arrival' lovely, but too safe. The melody is so strong, it's like he didn't know what to do with it. A strange choice of tune to cover. As for the cry of 'The Knife', I even heard it shouted out at non-Genesis concerts on occasion! 😂

Wow, Wrecking Ball really surprised me. I like Bruce's later output, but that one never clicked with me. On the other hand, I have played the others many many times, except for the Prefab, Brand X, and Tangerine Dream.

Let me give you a clue Brian. After several albums produced (butchered) by Brendan O'Brien, in 'Wrecking Ball' producer Ron Aniello finally offered a drum sound that sounded natural as oppose to being played under water. To me, a revelation, and for months I couldn't stop playing the album. It's the most exciting Bruce album since BITUSA I reckon. Are you familiar with the Prefab album? I don't get the impression that Brand X and TD are up your street, but Prefab maybe. Gorgeous, gorgeous, adult pop.
