Love the honesty Sam. I am sure someone at Ortur is watching this video and can't decide if they should be happy or upset. You gave an honest review and if I were in the market for this tool I would seriously considered buying this product. I would go ahead and change out the USB cable if there is any chance there might be a loose connection. Hopefully the price will be less than the price of another ruined piece of material.

I hope someone from the company sees this and listens. :) It would only help them develop a better product. That is also why I always tell companies I do honest reviews. I respect you guys (my viewers) much more than some company selling an item. :)

I have the Ortur Laser Master 2 20W laser engraver. I was having a terrible time with disconnects on my machine and what I finally determined was causing the problem was that it would build up static on the machine while it was running. You can do a google search and find a grounding procedure that you can perform the will eliminate the disconnect issue. They sell a kit but I didn't buy it, you can get everything you need at your local hardware store. When I was having problems with the disconnects, I thought it was a communication issue as well but it was static. The problem would also not be consistent, so it was difficult to troubleshoot. When I first started to have problems with the disconnects it would happen occasionally and I learned to work through it, but it eventually got to the point that it would disconnect 20 or more times during one project. Since I performed the grounding procedure I have had zero disconnects on my machine. Hope this helps!!
@hellraiser2914
@hellraiser2914 3 жыл бұрын
I've had random disconnects on my ortur laser master 2 and 3018cnc pro the issue is usually caused by 2 things: -electromagnetic noise around the USB cable and machine motherboard -voltage drop caused by the start of powerful machines around like a welder, table saw, strong hoover, or anything similar. To solve this problem you need to get a high quality shielded USB cable, get rid of electric motors, transformers, big cables from the area surrounding the machine- about 50in. Schould be enough. Sometimes motherboards are not capable of running every element of the machine at the full power and doing that might pull so much power that your power supply will reset, or your usb connection will. Running a 3018 in 3axes and running a spindle (powered up from the motherboard) almost always disconnected my machine from the computer. If your fridge compressor starts and you notice it breaks down the connection between the machine and the computer get an ups device and your good to go👍

Idk if they fixed it in the pro version, but the regular 2 had a problem with shorting out in more dry climates due to not being grounded properly. It first showed up with frequent disconnects until a mosfet popped on the mobo and that was all. That being said, my Ortur has been well worth the price despite the issues since these machines are incredibly cheap for what they are.

Great review, I've been in the market for an engraver and was leaning towards the Ortur, but I'm still not 100% on it yet. I've also thought about just splurging and grabbing a beefy CO2 laser so I can do cuts as well, but that's an even harder sell. On another note, it'd be interesting to hear about how things are going with your online business, excluding (or including if you prefer) the KZbin side of things.

If you hadn't already changed out your USB cable try tying an overhand knot in the end by the tablet, not a tight one but somewhat loose about the size of a nickel.. That may help reduce the interference of signaling to the machine.

I love the "after good amount of use" review. Much better than just out of the box. The cable management issue makes me a bit less enthused but it didn't seem to dissuade you from using it - and giving it a permanent home, so I'll likely pull the trigger about a month after I get a CNC in... after the shop construction is done (hopefully in a month or less!) Keep the videos coming!!!

Nice Video Sam. You hit the nail on the head. If they mark it as a Pro It should come with all the bells and whistle as you mentioned. I got the Laser Master 2 and only after about to weeks found the cable hanging up all over the place. Yes I did add my own cable chain and air assist this should be a must on any laser for about 15 bucks they could have added that as well. I finally said have to make an enclosure that the table can raise and lower which works pretty cool. but those little add on would make a better package Keep up the good work Cheers Fred

Thanks Sam, just caught your video. I’ve not purchased anything yet, budgeting, you know how it goes. The pro explanation you give is a valuable insight. There really is enough “pro” in this model to justify the noticeable rise in expense from the first model. E,g. I have and use the reMarkable 2 tablet, very thin, very light, monochrome(look it up) and it costs more than the first version, but has many improvements over that first one. That this pro model ORTUR has only superficial upgrades makes me want to research and wait longer. I know for some folks 500 isn’t a big deal, it is for me. Looking forward to seeing your next set of “biz” talks on this device and profitability.

I would love a 2024 video like this. Maybe one where you highlight the top 3-5 lasers in the 500-1000 range. I want to do some of this both on wood, as well as the coaster/tumbler engraving. Cutting isn't immediate, but I'd prefer a buy once, cry once option where I could get into that. Would you suggest Ortur? XTool? I am not interested in a Glowforge.

Great to watch a review of a product that is not 'geeky' and gets down to the facts right away. I was originally going to buy the original Ortur Master 2 but was holding out as I knew that the Pro was under development and was scheduled for release in March but was held back pending upgrades. As you said, the machine comes with all needed to get going and has upgrade parts for the likes of focusing, the air assist is something that makes work flow better and also minimises clouding of the lens and as you say needs to be addressed, the X axis issue can be resolved by using a wire hanger for the cable until Ortur come up with a cable handling system as on the Y axis.. Extraction is a necessity as you pointed out with the risk of chemical fumes from the materials being processed. My main interest is tile etching and the Ortur has been proved to be more than capable for this process as well as slate etching. You have convinced me that it is a worthwhile investment, many thanks!

You wouldn't want to run this in a closed room, not without the enclosure and exhausting the fumes out the room to the outdoors (window). This model pre-dates the new SF/LF versions. From what I have seen, I like the LF version better for the longer focal beam.

A very concise and honest video. I have been waiting for your review on this product. I have a Shapeoko XXL and went through the disconnect issues for about a month upgrading the USB connection, grounding it and everything else you could think of. Most of the disconnect issues were in the winter when the air in the shop is much drier. Of course that was running a CNC with all of the EMI that is possible, not sure about a laser engraver. As for spending the $500 for the machine you bought a dump truck for $2,000 without telling your wife so I am sure she would have been fine with $500 :) again great review, I may have to buy one now.

Ensure you run it on a filtered and regulated power source. The commercial equipment suppliers I dealt with require filtering and power regulation. Also ensure wires are channeled within a grounded RFI protected sleeve not exposed to potential stray RF sources like an very close WIFI system, 2 way radios or other not too distant sources that have arcing like bad relays, welding etc. Exposed wires can potentially be receive antennas for noise sources.

The big question is, what did you do to recover your project instead of scrapping it when you had a disconnect? I just returned a Comgrow 5 watt laser engraver because of the disconnects, or just plain lockups. It always happened on long projects after 2 hours. I never could get a long project to finish, but I did a lot of small ones OK. Like you I couldn't get a "resume" in light burn to work and it required me to reset everything to get it out of the lockup. If you would please share with us exactly what you did to recover from a lockup it would be greatly appreciated. Well done review, you are a good speaker and know what you want to say. It really did help me as I had toyed with getting a laser engraver but it would have to reside in the basement of our home with no easy way to ventilate it. I would want to use it in the winter as my summers are pretty well filled and where I live I can expect winter temperatures to reach -35F nearly every winter with -40 to -45F quite possible, not a time to have a window open. Now with that information I can go on and build a CNC router and not feel like I have made a bad decision.

This has been the most honest and straightforward review that I have ever seen. Thank you for your time in producing this video. I have subscribed to your channel. I am new to engraving, I want to buy a tool that I can engrave clear pictures on stone like granite for memorial plaques. Do you think this is that machine to do so before I spend my money? I look forward to watching all of your videos. Thank you

I appreciate your comment! I've not tried any other stones than slate so far... I'm not sure if this would work for granite or not, but am wondering...

So if I make cutting boards and want to do some laser personalization, is this a great machine for that? Money is not an issue
@Samcraftcom
@Samcraftcom 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this laser will absolutely do that! One thing you will want to consider is the size of your cutting boards (LxW) and the cutting size of this laser. Want to make sure it will fit within the rails of the machine.

As of right now, the Genmitsu Jinsoku LE-1620 with the optional air assist add-on kit from SainSmart. Here's the review video when I got the laser. I don't think the air assist was an option back then, but well worth it now! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKjPeXaPormXrdk

Found your channel just watching some videos, do you have the ORTUR Laser Engraver, Laser Master 2 PRO S2 LF or the SF, looking at getting one but being in the UK they only seem to have the LF version here but I'm told that more for cutting than engraving and I'm looking to engrave you like do. Thanks

Hello...So I have an LU1-3 and pretty sure it is a 15W. If there is no height adjustment, then what is the optimum distance for a perfect beam on the material? The fixed distance to the board I have it mounted to or have to play with the speed and power?

Sam, Xtool has been advertising heavy lately and I was wondering if you have compared any of their "Pro" features to your laser? I don't mind (as much) spending 3 times the money if I know something is a better product (and better for me is customer and community support as much as the physical machine). The advertising makes the Xtool D1 sound amazing but that is what advertisers supposed to do. I have experience in woodworking and carpentry but know just enough about CNC and lasers to be able to spend a whole lot of money and not really be happy with my purchases. Any advice would be most appreciated.

@@Samcraftcom The model I just got says: "True 10W Laser Head Output Power: Ortur 2 Pro-S2-LU2-10A laser engraving machine equipped with 2022 Newly Upgraded 10W laser module, which adopts dual-compression diode technology to achieve true 10W laser power. Its cutting penetration and accuracy are twice of ordinary lasers which is able to cut 20mm wooden boards and 30mm acrylic sheets, it is almost beyond the effect of 60W CO2 laser. And the fastest speed up to 15000mm/min. In addition, the laser module has a built-in air-assist interface, which is designed for cutting." Was yours this one? I hope it will cut 1/4 inch wood OK. I haven't got it cutting at all yet. Waiting on replacement mother board. Thanks for the video.🙂

ALL of these diode lasers with exposed frames are hobby level. Pro usually just gives you an external sd card reader and a stop button. These are also very dangerous as the laser that can blind you is exposed. One oops reflection and you could be done for. If your a business.. Buy a c02. It will cut easier and quicker. I find that with my atomstack.. I am needing so many upgrades.. I might as well get a c02

My 2 cents..from a laser master 2, 20 w, You need a computer to run it. I bought a kids laptop from Best Buy, a KANO. I think that's the name. About $200. You need laser burner software, like Lightburn. ($40 ). There is GRBL? free. Big learning curve for me at age 65, but ok. You have to import B&W photos or schematics, drawings, some will need to be worked on for cropping, contrast. Some fixes to graphics can be done in Lightburn. I have tried color photos. More settings to learn so the color photo burns correctly to B&W. It can work. Lots of different shading settings. I have learned a lot from youtube, Lightburn people. Some folks are getting 2 colors on tile by spraying 2 colors of paint and just burning through the top layer. Sealing the paint on the tile after cause that method is not permanent. Image will wash off with solvents. Norton method actually melts the paint into the tile surface. Use white gloss paint for black image on tile. Burning paint with a laser creates some bad fumes. I burnt some wood with the laser too. Wrong power setting for cedar. Not what I intended. Make a good exhaust system and wear the laser goggles. I have green, then went to the dark orange color for the frequency of light from a blue laser. I just burned a "Merry Christmas" on a white tile using off white paint, 1200 speed at 45% power. Came out good! Ok, I talk too much.
