According to an interview he had for IGN, apparently was still in the middle of uni taking up writing when he wrote the first game; even submitting the screenplay for a class. After Max Payne 1, that's where I personally really felt his writing flourish from there. Its amazing to see it improve like that in Alan Wake, significantly from how personal the premise, story and messages of the series are. *Not to diminish Max Payne in any way, I really adore the games!
