They created gracie jiu jitsu bro. At the time judo wasnt really a form of self defense it was more for sport so the gracies took the throws that they thought were useful for self defense (hip throws etc theres not many in bjj) and focused more on the ground newaza techniques of judo because they knew that 85 percent of street fights go to the ground. And then they modified it for the smaller weaker person to be able to beat a bigger stronger person in a real fight. To this day Gracie jiu jitsu is the best grappling system in the world so how can I say they didnt modify it bro

in newaza, the omoplata (Ashi Sankaku Garami in japanese) is legal . The only ilegal techniques in Shiai are Ashi kansetsu waza (leg locks, heel hooks) and kubi waza (neck cranks). Also Do Jime (rib breaker) is illegal .

ygustavo but shoulder locks are also illegal, so it depends on whether this is technically deamed an arm lock or a shoulder lock. Tbh i doubt the IJF even know it's a move, since they know so little about judo, so it's probably legal because they dln't know it. If they knew it they'd ban it, that's what the IJf do best

@frostymourne
@frostymourne 8 жыл бұрын
+Vaughan MacEgan Erm.. Because he does? Its a Judo channel, but Matt cross trains in BJJ (see the purple belt). There is nothing wrong with cross training, in fact it helps you have an edge against one who doesn't. Example a BJJ practitioner who doesn't cross trains in Judo would have trouble against one who does.
@vaughanmacegan4012
@vaughanmacegan4012 8 жыл бұрын
+Roy Muk To be honest I'm not seeing anything here that doesn't look like newaza from Judo either Kodokan or Kosen and moves from Jujutsu. And I can't see how cross-training would help a Judo practitioner since it's the same art with different names and Jui-Jitsu has little to no stand-up throws.
@frostymourne
@frostymourne 8 жыл бұрын
+Vaughan MacEgan Ok if you are here to debate with me on "Oh this isn't BJJ", STOP. Because i've moved on from this. I AM A JUDOKA not a BJJer and yes i am fully aware BJJ comes from Judo, i'm not here to argue or debate with you on the history. I merely said "Awesome to see Matt cross train". And from experiences as a person who trains Judo recreationally at least twice a week for already 8 years+. Cross training HELPS fill the newaza gap Judokas sometimes miss out, you can take my word for it because i've trained with BJJers and also Judokas who cross trained in BJJ, you improve because you learn more in the newaza aspect as BJJ focuses more on that. The same goes for BJJers who cross train in Judo, they learn their stand up from us. Soak up information and techniques from both and you would improve. Because they focus on different things. Examples of Judokas who cross trains in BJJ: Matt(As you can see he holds a BJJ purple belt also), Travis Stevens, Jimmy Pedro, Shinya Ayoki, Koji Komuro, dan camarillo Examples of BJJers who cross trains in Judo: Rodolfo Viera, Saulo & Xande Ribeiro, Claudio Calasans

Depends on your instructor is. I had the opportunity this year to attend some Judo classes as I was visiting another town - I study Jujutsu - and he spent equal amounts of time teaching tachi-waza and newaza. Both aspects are extremely important in the history of Judo - it's just that the sport version ruined that equal importance. I still believe that cross training with BJJ (or Kosen Judo which is basically what BJJ is) will only hurt your tachi-waza techniques as there is no techniques in that sport that will help your game in the standup arena, how are you going to practice that uchi-mata or perfect that drop soei nage. Case in point Travis Stevens great in newaza - but, his standup game needs a lot of work. That being said if you are not competing in sport Judo then do whatever art you desire just don't believe that you are going to be better at defending yourself with Brazillian Newaza because when you are on the ground, a swift kick to the head by another assailant, is all you need to end up in hospital or worse.

Why is he wearing a white belt and why are you wearing purple?
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 5 жыл бұрын
KENSHIRO it's a BJJ grading. Although these are mostly also in judo, some in fact aren't very common in bjj at all like hiza gatame, they're wearing their bjj grades. Purple is the grade before brown, which is still before black as usual. Purples pretty high, my instructor in bjj is also a purple belt. But the way gradings work are iffy. There's no proper bjj syllabus like there is in judo, and there are far fewer be,ts. So a group of 100 white belts in bjj will have a massive range of skills, whereas a group of 100 white be,ts in judo are all pretty much the same rank. In bjj the ranks are White Blue Purple Brown Black Then it gles the same as for judo. As such younspend much longer on each belt than you do in judo (sometimes years at a time). So these techniques were probably matt's own devision for the test, since to my know,edge different instructors grade different in bjj (unlike in judo were we all have the same syllabus)

Because they are not allowed in the competition setting does not at all mean that they are not part of the Judo curriculum. Competition is a very shallow part of the whole of judo. And, as Humperdoo says, all these newaza techniques are equal in all 'styles' ( if these even exist ). In fact, all the BJJ techniques are derived from Judo. As, in turn, all Judo techniques are derived from JuJutsu. Only the mindset is different.

The more I read the history behind it and see videos like this, the more I realize the Gracies just ripped off a ton of people by copying judo and renaming it BJJ. Sad, cause I train BJJ and love it.
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 5 жыл бұрын
Jamie Phillips i also train BJj and love it too. But the other thing i hate is that the gracies first said they invented bjj newaza. Then they changed it to 'inproved', but they didn't even improve it, you can see videos of Kimura and kther judoka doing omoplatas and spider guards in the 40s the same way we do in bjj now. Judo was really getting popular too, but its competitors were forbid from doing prize fights which is why no good judokas were in the ufc (that and the gracies got to pick who fiught and only picked guys they knew they could beat) so instead we get a bloody olympian representing juso, instead of a real kodokan judoka, and as such it gets smashed and judo's chucked in the bullshido pile. And now despite the fact that everyone watched judo at the olympics for decades, all of that just got washed away and they forgot everytning about judo, and just believed whatever the gracies told them it was. And then you go full circle with Bjj instructors teaching judo throws, with no training. A guy at my dojo said he went to a bjj course thing at his work, and they did ogoshi (tbh in a bjj guy's eyes every single throw is ogoshi, they realky can't tell the differences) on thin mats and he said 'if i didn't do judo for three decades i would've gotten seriously hurt' because they don't know how to do the throws, they drill them five or so times and move on. Then they teach 'we're gonna escale kesa gatame' then they teach you how to escape some abomination of a scarf hold, because nobody there actually knows how to do kesa gatame. So then a proper judoka comes along, puts them in kesa gatame and they can't breathe because they learned to escape skmeone sat next to you giving you a cuddle. I'm lucky though, my instructor did judo a while so even though he still thinks half the hip throws are ogoshi, and all seoi throws are seoi nages, he knows basically what he's talking about, and he knows how to actually escape keaaSa and other holds. But a lot of onstructors just believe anything the gracies tell them, so when the gracies tell them 'kesa's so shit don't even bother' they go 'yep, well that's fact because the guy who was v Convicted for assualting someone with a metal bat after his brother lost a fight said so, so it must be truem And don't even get me started onnthe Kimura fjght... The lies Helio tells about that fight are disgraceful. I actjally consider BJj to just be an extension of kosen judo, whkch in itself is traceable to Tanabe. So baskcally Tanabe invented newaza (which isnpretty much true), Oda and his students studied it and refined it, helio stuck a new name on it, royce made it famous, then the people from around the world improved it further. I would not consider any of the gracies to be the founders of BJJ, nor even masters of it. The kosen judoka of the '50s were able to best Helio. He just made a special ruleset, fought ln soft canvas and spread lies about what actually happened in the fight. Like the lie that he challenged Kimura because he wanted to challenge himself. There were two lies in that statement. But i've ranted long enough, i will stop here because if i gl any further into the Kimura fight i won't ever be able to stop

@@jimmyalderson1639 Lots of good info. Makes me wish we had some good Judo schools around Atlanta. BJJ has taken over everything. Id love to learn both. As for the history, seems to be so much fraud behind the Gracies. Very sad indeed.
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 5 жыл бұрын
Jamie Phillips ikr, i used to admirenthe gracies and the only reason i was able to back out was because i heard them unjustly criticising judo. If i hadn't done judo i might still be worshipping the kinds of people who run away from fights then show up later with weapons. BJJ's a fine art, i am lucky enough to be able to do practice both BJJ and judo. But the gradies got a monopoly on america, i've even heard that except in rio judo's even more popular than bjj in brazil. They basically made a smear campaign with the ufc to clear out all other martial arts in america, even though they hardly got fair representation. I think judo had kne fight with royce and it was just some olympian, when royce fought a kodokan judoka he got choked out (then pretended he didn't and got the ref to declare a draw, and then the rematch which for the sake of royce's reputation i won't talk about). Then bjj just took over, overnight. Before when Kano was talking on the radio about the olympics, as an ambassador for japan, the broadcaster practical,y forced him to talk about judo because he said that the philosophy of judo is something that will really reasonate with american audiancesm and it did. But bjj undid all of that and sent judo packing. It's pretty much one of the only countries where bjj is more popular than judo, not many others are oike that. When bjj events are hosted in england, the commentators often use judo vocabulary because judo's much more popular here. Whereas in america if a judo does something it's always given the bjj name. Five judo do five different hip throws? They're all just 'hip tosses'. I love watching bjj guys do stand up though cos they think every hip throw is called 'ogoshi' and every seoi throw is 'seoi nage', some even think judo do the throws wrong which is an... Interesting view, to say the least. But yeah, it is a shame you can't do both, especially since bjj charges a lot. At my club (which is cheap) it's £10 a session for an adult, or £50 a month for three sessions a week, ik in america it's like $200 or something ridiculous like that. Whereas i do two different judo clubs and the most expensive one charges £5 a session, with a three session every six sessions. But bjj's great, i hope you enjoy it if you do decide to train. But if they teach you hownto get out of things like the scarf hold (or kesa gatame. Or toa ll bjj guys 'that thing judo people donthat we keep saying isn't good but we still get caught in ut all the time') be warey because, not always,, but sometimes instructors have some interesting opinions on how to escape judo holds - because in bjj they don't teach holds. They teach positions like side control, and they teach you how to keep a good side control and mount and maybe they'll teach you north south. But they won't teach you how to hold someone in place with mune gatame,mkesa gatame,mtateshiho gatame or kami shiho gatame or yoko shiho gatame or uki gatame, etc. They're not bad, it's just a different mindset when grappling. But a lot of bjj instructors like to teach some judo stuff, or how to beat some judo stuff, without actually knowing properly how to do them. But when it gets to the groundwork you won't find any better teachers (unless you went to a kosen judo club, but those are rare and only in japan and idek hownup to scratch their newaza is, but i know i've seen them doing spider guard and they've been doing omoplatas since 1940 so orobabky pretty up to date)

TGGP senpai lots of people don't know judo has newaza. The ijf decided 'people don't like newaza' so instead of keeping it and letting the audience learn to appreciate it, they just put a time restraint on it, letting competitors get away with getting bad positions in competition. And so the audience/spectators often don't know the syllabus. Which the explains why you get so many bjj bois saying this is bjj because they also don't know judo's syllabus. The ijf have destroyed judo's reputation

insecto there's a reason for that, because most bjj guys don't know that. They think judo's newaza was taken from them. Or they think judo's newaza was really bad, and they improved it, then judo took the improved product. Not just average enfusiasts or practitioners, but also instructors, masters and jesus christ the guys who write books are the worst.
