I had the R3 overheat on me while filming a tuber behind a boat. I was filming in 120FPS 4k. It was also 90 degrees out and had been filming for about 15 minutes.

Thanks Simon. Having worked in I.T. I might say faster networking (LAN, WIFI, Bluetooth) doesn't mean more stable and vice-versa. Protocols can be enhanced vs. outdated. Companies can put their own technology to perfect speed over the standard, and sometimes that means faster but unstable. E.g. with Bluetooth there could have been ways to avoid issues with different smartphones, cameras, earsets, microphones, computers blocking each other to obtain higher priority on the bandwidth. Only Canon techies will know if it is so. 🙂

So no mention of further improvements in ISO. I guess the gravy train has been paused on that one. Really liking some of the other improvements including one you didnt mention: Better user control over when it jumps into whole-frame AF. Am going to love the two-stage AF on, and of course all the data science they have laid on that coproccessor. Too many to list for sure.

13:00 - I've only had the R3 overheat *ONCE* while shooting video. I was shooting outdoors on a hot summer day in direct sunlight. Shooting a wedding ceremony, which I normally do at 24fps, but didn't realize I was shooting in 60fps. It was a long ceremony, sun beating down on the camera and it did overheat. I've been shooting with the R3 bodies since they were released (photo and video) and that was the only overheat issue I've ever had. I do occasionally get the temperature notice (white, not red) in photo mode, but had the same issue on the R5 bodies. Doesn't cause any issues though.

Hi Simon, thanks for the bloopers in the final seconds .. that was a long time ago 🙂 When you try to speak faster, the pronunciation becomes likely less reliable .. so Canon may have a small point faster and more reliable connection are exactly the same ;-) In general, this list looks a lot like the 100 reasons for the R5ii .. basically it's either 45megapickles or just 24 compensated by cross-type AF, dual CFxB, even less rolling shutter and integrated grip

The R1 specs aren’t surprising at all given Canon’s track record with the cameras they release. The 1-series is lower megapixel, action, sports, etc., while the 5-series is higher megapixel, portrait, do it all, etc. People are surprised by the 24 megapixels but it doesn’t surprise me given all the previous flagships were 20 megapixels; I was actually expecting 20 megapixels. People need to understand professionals need something fast and reliable, and the lenses they have are usually super expensive and can fill the frame properly, hence there isn’t a need to have more megapixels. The R5m2 is more versatile, no doubt about it, but the R1 is undoubtedly aimed for strict professionals who not only have the money to buy the body itself but also all the top of the line glass they need at the front.

Sounds weird but i prefer to use red dot sight for tracking fast action instead of the EVF, im sure these AF improvement is nice but i don’t think the pros had issues with the older non AI assisted AF

On several occasions, while shooting outdoor sports, my R3 overheated. It was a warm spring day with direct sunlight hitting my camera. It was very frustrating. After I figured out what was going on, I had to keep the camera out of direct sunlight. Then I didn't have anymore issues. I had to use myself as a shield, when possible.
@hawaiifreespeechnews2 ай бұрын
Actually the real issue is a big portion of R3 owners have a defected unit that overheats as quickly as the early R5 and most people don't even realize it because the camera has to be on for a while first and you need to shoot in 4k 120 or 6k 60fps before you start to notice the abnormal overheating. I am one of them. Beware canon's customer service, they suck

It pisses me off to even talk about this but my R3 is a defective unit that overheats when I shoot in 4k 120 or 6k 60. I sent it to canon to get fixed and their repair team sent if back to me saying they found nothing wrong with it.

file a small claims tribunal complaint. Make sure to have someone videoing you so you have evidence. Canon is probably testing the unit in a 20c air conditioned office LOL!

Being £2,500 cheaper, the R5 mark II still appears to be a more attractive option given that it offers much of the advancements over the R3 that the R1 claims to do. Canon needs to re-examine the costs of these top end bodies, as the depreciation rate is excruciating, with their re-sale value plummeting in just over a couple of years.

I just don't understand this comment. Sports photographers shoot MANY photos. We need a machine that will last. We need perfect photos every time. Many photos. I have at two photogs at every event. Between the two, we shoot 150k to 200k photos per event. How could I handle a camera that gives me 45Mp x 150,000 images? This upcoming R1 is going to be the perfect tool for us professionals. You must have a VERY big garage for your Ferraris. Try prefocusing. It sounds like you need a Sony A1. Sony is drifting back to the 24mp's (oops), but if your venues have better lighting that might be a good way to go. To their credit, they added a coproccessor and they have managed to slam all that data through a coprocessor. That being said, I'm saying all this as a sports shooter and not a filmmaker. You're needs may very well be different.

Canon didn't make it 24mpx because they couldn't make it 50. They made it 24mpx because that's what the majority of customer that buy these cameras want. I do think, however, that a high megapixel version might have a market as well. Maybe one is in the works.
