Kudos Mark, By far one of the best interviews, I´ve ever seen not only on the watches tv but on the internet about the watch industry, of course, it is controversial but that is the way to go, that makes you rethink why to pay 20, 40 up to a 100 thousand CHF knowing that even with the mark up its probably only 25 % more than you have to pay to get a great piece with the best quality, I guess Mr. Stern is having an ulcer and a stroke right now because people like him don´t understand where the economy is going. It’s fantastic that people are creating pieces like this. I could never afford a hand crafted/polished high end tourbillon. I am such a big fan of the complication and don’t mind how industrial it might be. Hopefully his next budget complication will be a fusee chain🤞🏻🤓

Thanks for your positive feedback on my Chapter 4. In fact it’s not that industrial. Olivier Mory is a Senior Watchmaker and crafts its tourbillon one by one in his atelier.
@OlivierMoryMechanics3 жыл бұрын
Fusee + chain is not necessary anymore. It was a way to stabilité the torque on the old mainsprings. Now we can produce flat torque curves mainsprings which make that kind of mechanism useless. But for the beauty of the thing it’s still nice to see. @thomas Baillod : I’m 39, I don’t feel old enough to be a “Senior Watchmaker”.

Lovely interview - I’m personally a huge fan of accessibility and think this is great. People can spend more if they want certain finishes, or love a particular design or style - it’s all in the hands of the buyer. This gives people more options and us viewers (and watch buyers) should celebrate that. Some comments seem to think this means buying a more expensive watch is wrong, which I don’t think is true. This brand’s purpose is clear and it’s great they are supporting suppliers in this way. Again, great interview!

Excellent interview and even better watch. Learned a lot about the full commercial cycle of the watches. I like the explanation of the channels and marketing. But in my view this brand has a two major challenges: 1) the initial Series/models -chapters- use chinese movements. That hurts the brand building in ways you won’t imagine. No matter how much you want to reduce costs, there are corners (even imaginary ones, these chinese movements perhaps are great) that can’t simply be cut. 2) The name of the brand itself; it is impossible to pronounce and doesn’t link with a particularly history. The owner should have named after himself, or something like a landmark in the Jura region where watches are created.

I really like the concept of bringing cheap swiss watch-making to the masses, but the marketing concept reminds me of 90s Ponzi pyramids schemes, but who knows it might work well. I think they should make smaller watches, the trend is going down to the 36-39 mm range instead of the 42-44 range.

Thank you for sharing such a diversified content! It's always good to discover different perspectives from watch making in Switzerland. But, this is like making something in order to satisfy a certain market segment and it doesnt matter if the product makes sense. Similar to putting an eta movement into a 47mm panerai case, just to make it big. I would personally spend $500 on a chinese tourbillion just to get a feeling of owning one because either $500 or $5000 is far from getting a legit quality tourbillion anyway.
@atmosrepair2 жыл бұрын
Interesting thoughts, thank you for sharing! My idea was to put an automatic ETA movement into my own home made, cast solid platinum case and sell at $5k USD. Kinda along the lines what you mentioned, to buy a solid platinum case watch isn't possible at that price.

The guy is even talking About ‘the pyramid’.
@realchuckp3 жыл бұрын

@OlivierMoryMechanics3 жыл бұрын
The pyramid he’s talking about is the price level pyramid of range. A Ponzi would be : give me 4000 CHF and once you find 3 other people you will have a watch. Here you pay 4000, you have a watch. Period. You don’t want to use the Affluendor program ? Fine, just buy the watch and walk away. If you use it you will have tokens like you have miles when you book a flight. And like the Miles program you can redeem them into a free flight once you have enough.
@thomasbailllod64373 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification Olivier. Indeed, the pyramid was referring to the volume and value in the segmentation of the watch industry. Nothing (at all) to do with Ponzi 😂

That's literally why this is called the Veblen dillema... but I disagree either way. I'm interested in watches to see the mechanical movement doing what it does. That's why tourbillon interest me. I'm not going to spend $40,000-150,000 on a watch. So my options are a $200-500 Chinese tourbillon or nothing. I'd rather have something higher quality but also not get fleeced by a watch company charging 500x markup. If I can buy the same thing for 10x less money why would I look elsewhere. Then again I'm not your typical Rolex buyer who wants people to think they're rich by having a specific brand name on their wrist.
