No dollar store special, just a focus on building a 72hr bag with budget and quality combined.
The target goal was a bug out bag for $100, but I had to break the budget to add essential gear
for first aid, lighting and cordage. Also toilet paper is good cause leaves suck.
Check out the featured gear below:

From my first day backpacking for 10 days totally away from civilization, on to today...this is a never ending learning curve. Because equipment keeps improving, and through trial and error, you learn what works, what you need, what you ditch. No complaints on your choices...

Like your vids and your approach to gearing up. Practical and realistic suggestions to a really diverse subject. In the end everyone has an " informed opinion " on what a bug out bag will cost and what it sold have in it. Aside from the basic 10 C's and a medical kit and spare dry clothes. It should be tailored to your personal needs and geographical area. Example I live in New England so my bag needs more shelter and warm sleeping gear and clothing . Florida would need large water capacity and purification. Build it for you and your families needs. Not because someone said you need it.

“Great u waisted money at dollar store” 👏😂. That’s a great quality pack and I agree I luv the way they did the compression straps on the bottom. It kinda has the shape of a kelty redwing with the roundness. I agree with getting out with your gear and using it. Even if u can’t make it out to the woods I always take my on our walking/hiking trails with the kids. As for the tarp/shelter setups, knots, and using your gear a lot of those items u can practice at home with. Stay safe through the storm and great video!👍🙏🍻

Great point you make...even taking your gear out for a basic hike makes a difference, training doesn't have to be an epic multi night trip or nothing. Balance is everything. Glad you enjoyed the video...we're bunkered down west of the storm so we should be good to go.

I like that sleeping "bag" more like a blanket with a zipper lol, but sooo small. I'm betting with clothes, proper thermals and that sleeping bag, one could hypothetically be fine in the low 40s to high 30s?

@@TheSurvivalOutpost with a thermal bivy I push it that low easily with proper layers. I have had it for years and it is still going strong. You need to be careful with it at low temps tho because of the waterproof coating (1000mm waterhead) it does not breath as well as an uncoated bag.

This past March i decided i was gonna build INCH bags for my wife and I. Started looking into it and quickly realized the $500 limit per bag was a pipedream. We spent about $2500 on both of our bags combined and we still need to spend about $1500 to finish them. With what i know now, i could build a pretty good budget bug out bag with a $500 limit not counting the bag. One piece of advice i could give to a new prepper/survivalist/bushcrafter, buy a good pack with thick waist belt and shoulder straps, preferably a framed pack either internal or external, and load lifters. Trust me, you'll save yourself time, money, and a lot of pain and discomfort. Secondly, definitely go out and train with your gear. It's crucial to figure out if you can actually bug out and survive with it. I go out about once a month and stay a night or two. There are some profoundly idiotic $100 Wal-Mart survival/bug out challenge videos on KZbin lol. One dude bought a gallon of bleach lol, yeah I'm gonna carry that shit around...okay, smh. Happy Labor Day man and congrats on the 20k.
@TheSurvivalOutpost
@TheSurvivalOutpost 5 жыл бұрын
Gallon of beach eh, gotta add that to my 72hr gear lol. And yeah the price tags goes up fast! I don't even wanna think how much $ I have invested in gear. That doesn't even count weapons. I do agree with an internal frame, once the weight gets over 30lbs it can get kinda rough on the back for the inexperienced. Pros and cons to frames. Good on you for building out those bags and getting out with your gear.

LA Police Gear is a good source to get Survival Gear and packs they have a 72 hour pack for under $50. Everybody slams Bear Grylls but a lil bit of pistol grip tape around the handle and your good to go. Thanks for the great video. Walmart is a great resource. I was able to build mine for under $150 but quality over quantity. Try your gear out in the back yard, it’s a fun camp out with the kids and learns survival 101.

Personally, I hate the 3 day concept for bugout bags. I can survive with only the clothes on my back for 3 days. For an actual bugout scenario, I plan for longer, so I like a tent. Everyone throws tarps in there, but if I'm out for an extended period, I want an actual shelter. You can get a cheap one for 30 bucks, and attach to the pack. Yes, it's bulky, but it can always be tossed if speed and distance is a priority. Just my 2 cents. Also, an often overlooked item is a spool of fishing line for cheap, compact corsage. I usually carry the 50 pound micro filament, since it is strong and easier to work with than mono. Usually cheaper than paracord or bank line, and you get a lot more of it.
@TheSurvivalOutpost
@TheSurvivalOutpost 5 жыл бұрын
I think after taking care of your EDC and 24hr bag, moving up to 72hr survival gear makes sense. Of course that doesn't mean you don't plan for longer or that the 72hr gear will somehow magically last forever. Really...it depends on the situation. 72hr kit for a 3 day camping trip, a quick evac with expectation to return home is logical. Anything past that, I believe its a good idea to get more in depth with your gear selection. I like tarps but can totally get why you'd prefer a tent. If you find flat ground, its a quick and easy setup.
@inspired4more
@inspired4more 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheSurvivalOutpost Yeah. I like the kits, but for anything more than an overnight trip my camping bag is my bugout bag, so it's all stuff I know will get me through more than a few days. Great video! I would personally actually recommend Dollarstore as a starting kit for a young person/beginner to train with, take it out for a weekend 'camping' trip once a year at least to learn the mindset that's necessary and later on when the budget allows it and the knowledge sets in to upgrade the crap with either good budget-friendly or expensive gear 🙂 Edit: I mean if that persons budget is so bad that it would take years before that person would even have a simple decent kit consisting of only the 5Cs. Otherwise I would definitely recommend them to start with better equipment of course 😊

Thanks glad you liked it. I really wanted to hit that $100 mark, but couldn't quite make. If you go factor in the pouches, especially contents of the one on the front, the price tags easily hits $300 or more. But for the basics I think I did ok.

The Survival Outpost It’s good that you showed you can do it on the cheap when you start out. I tell people all the time to only start out with what they can afford. Then after they get their kit together they can save up money to upgrade when and where they can. I don’t like it when people here on KZbin bash others for having a cheap kit. They have to understand that not everyone has the means of which to put together a $5000 kit. Everyone has to start somewhere but they can’t start from the same place financially.

I could have thrown in more gear, but didn't want to distract from the foundation of budget equipment. Like any other pack, if it gets wet enough the water will seep through. The Survival Outpost the point I meant to convey is that without a real shelter system all the rest of the gear is a moot point. Shelter is (generally) the top priority in any survival situation. It’s a useless kit on its own because the priorities were backwards. Even with a $100 budget I would start with a tarp and sleeping pad before anything else.

My # 1 observation is -- my guess is this BOB weighs North of 30 Lbs. For that weight, I want a frame on the pack, if I am trying to go any distance. 2. a BOB is not cheap, and one should be ready to have it sit accessible, and not 'rob' from it. - no using the flashlights for a minute, no, "Oh I have some cordage in my BOB, etc. 3. Try eating just that 'lifeboat ration for 3 days

Thanks Mark, we'll be good to go at a secure location west of the storm. Mini vacation and of course doing a video on this :D

I have a feeling you haven't discussed who's "in charge" with your wife, or you're single. Lol Keep your gear dry. I know you've got a little rain headed your way. Be safe.

The wife has her gear, we split up responsibility. She covers my daughters bag, her own stuff, water and snack preps in her vehicle. My son and I have own gear sets + water, food, weapons all that essential gear. We decided to evac due to our position on beachside. Gives me an great opportunity to run my gear through the paces
