None of these vehicles/trailers, were built for tall people where the average human height was 4'10"! Even the cars were not designed for anyone that had a tall torso when seated!

They had to consider how tall they could go up so they could accommodate going under a 14 ft or shorter bridge some bridges only have a height of 12 ft excess for going under it!

Holloway Debraal INC built a Jeep Comanche Motorhome, 1987 only 5 were made and only 3 are know to exist. I have 1 with only 83k miles on it. Going to freshen it up, undo some previous retrofits, add some 21st century upgrades, make it solar friendly, and hit the road or the off road (Its a Jeep and yes a 4x4). Who knows I might get lucky and find a 4 legged friend to ride along.

Did you ever freshen up that Jeep Comanche? If so did you take it off road? My late husband and I had several different RVs during our 40+ years together and also dreamed about a 4X4 but never managed it.

I am surprised that you did not include the Bluebird Wanderlodge in this video. I own the first of 10 prototypes built in 1964. The first production model happened mid 1965. I have repaired, replaced, and restored mine, and now live in it full-time. It is the perfect apartment on wheels. I have set in Alabama for the past three years, and due to weather, I am now having to pay attention to the exterior once again. I have photos if you are interested in adding it to a future video. Thanks, Freddie

I bet ya I include on the next classic camper video. I just hope there is media out there with interior images too. That's the challange making these classic or vintage anything videos. The pictures are usually very hard to come by. I have spent hrs/days just trying to find interiors on several of these campers. A lot of good ones I didn't include for that reason. Thanlks for the suggestion though, I appreciate that.

When I go on vacation, I want to feel like I'm on vacation. I don't want to do household chores and rarely cook unless it's cooking seafood I've caught; a small gasolene or propane burner is all I need. Motels and hotels stays in a lifetime are cheaper than one of these. Seen many an RV used once every few years and deteriorating in someones yard or car port.

When you install a pop up on a trailer you literally cut the lifespan of that trailer down by 80%. Please people.. just stop. I'm able to buy and rebuild campers that are 80 years old. 80 years from now you will not be able to do that on the modern trailers. Not to mention that modern trailers are built so lightweight and so cheaply that they literally rattled themselves apart.

Those GMC motorhomes were the real deal. They were front-wheel drive, so the deck height was very low. You didn't have to climb steep stairs to get inside. The plumbing was copper tubing, so it never broke. The build quality was awesome. They are still highly sought after today.

Loved the program. Brought back memories of cars and campers I've restored over the years. In 1989 I bought an "Amigo" motorhome. I think it was a 1971 model. Ugly as hell, built on a Dodge drivetrain which was solid and dependable, but bottom line, one ugly motorhome! Of course, I loved it. The beauty of the camper was its simplicity in up keep and repair. Could pretty much do it all myself. I sold the Amigo 30 years ago. Miss it every now and then. I've looked online many timers to try and find one but no luck. I can't even find sources that the Amigo camper even existed! Can you help me ? Was there such a thing as the Amigo motorhome? Thanks a lot, Rod

My ass-hat father bought a 1937 International Harvester D-30 flatbed in 1971 , onto which he bolted a vintage Airstream trailer (chassis removed). He named it Bullwinkle and my brother and I illegally hung out in the Airstream on road/camping trips and kept bugging our parents by calling them on the intercom he’d wired for communication between the cab of the old truck and the camper. Mostly we camped in it on our land outside of Bend , Oregon. Was perfect for that and I can still smell the sagebrush.

I went on my first camping trip when I was five years old in a then brand new 1964 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht International travel trailer that was owned by friends of my family. I would never have dreamed at the time, but that trailer would one day become mine as unbeknownst to me, I purchased it from its second owners in 1995. I have owned that trailer for over 27 years now, and will likely keep it as long as I am able to trave. Over the years, I have had some minor restoration completed, but it still is mostly very well preserved original as is my 1978 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre that I purchased from its original owner in 2002. During the interim, I camped with my parents in a 1969 Sunway 8.5-foot cabover truck camper mounted on a 1969 Chevrolet C-20 Pickup and my aunt in a 1970 Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile, My Airstream and Argosy are definitely my favorites for their versatility when traveling.

Somewhat unimportant, but interesting to me. the Rectrans Discoverer, from the same designer as the '63 Stingray, used a Chrysler 413 engine. Anyone familiar with the Beach Boys might remember the song Shut Down which was about a Stingray drag racing a 413. The Discoverer has a bit of both!

There is a Japanese camper you have shown, in which the roof opens up to create a second floor that really impresses me. The whole thing is mounted on a small truck, and was built by three students. who lived in it while travelling around Japan, for two years. A really clever piece of design.

You people drive me nuts with these "today's money" qualifications when you talk about the value of things. Who are you to say what it "would be" exactly, in "today's money". Because believe it or not, "today's money" is irrelevant. Because you are giving us all the other information in "yesteryears' contexts, I think k it's safe to give us their actual prices when they were sold. Then if you choose to follow up on where the motor homes are now, uou can tell us how much was spent in upgrading. It's just too confusing to suggest some random numbers that aren't comparably measurable the way it seems you're just suggesting. How did you do the math to arrive at thr conclusions here. Forgive me I'd i sound ignorant but these numbers sound pretty abstract.

7:12 I truly would love to own one these but I doubt if it is even available in my country and importing anything into my country is ridiculously expensive. I've been looking at these campers for years now. We have two vintage caravans my husband and I am working on at the moment, one will become my sewing/craft room and the other for camping. The deco liner is absolutely awesome, what a statement! Oh and the HHG model X, those windows are one of a kind, like some wonderful beach house. I just think it's stunning.

Some of the 70's motorhomes shown reminded me a lot of my Executive Class A from that period. It is a 31 foot fiberglass body motorhome, built on a Dodge chassis. The original owner, a retired military guy, had it converted, when it was new, to run on propane. The Big Dodge V-8 (could still run) and the built in Onan generator were both converted to propane only, with 180 gallons worth of propane tanks installed underneath. It just serves as a guest house at my place, with a wood burning stove I installed for heat. I call it the "Executive Suite", and keep the roof maintained. Have thought of restoring it, but am getting too old and poor to want to use a big old dinosaur RV... 🚫⛽🚌🕸

@Fred brandon I think I am...It looks quite like a small interstellar ship in flight. That appeals to me a great deal. The slide in to the Vid asked if it was known what kind of RV it was. I do not, but I wouldn't mind seeing the inside of it. That's the one I mean.

@Fred brandon No, Mr. Brandon, there is a spot somewhere in the video above where they show an RV from the outside, from a few different angles, and while they are showing it, the Voice Over asks those of us who are viewing the video if we know what kind of RV it is and if we have knowledge of any of the details about the said RV. THAT is the RV I want to know about, because it's styling appeals to me very much. As I said above, they called it a "Futuristic Looking RV", now I'm assuming this is because they do not know what the actual brand name of the RV is. Do you have any knowledge of that particular RV? If so, please enlighten me.

I was a little disappointed that you didn't have anything on the GEM TRAVEL TRAILER COMPANY out of Kentwood Michigan a subberb of Grand Rapids Mi, Herman Shebout started the COMPANY with a small trailer called "Little Gem" I don't know the EST. year, Herman was a man you'd of thought he had a fire behind him,and I believe that's probably what caused his death when he was clearing a woods for a employee parking lot with a cage less bulldozer when a tree hit him and killed him in 1972. I only worked there the last two years of his life, I started out as the Yardman placing trailers according to size or too be sold first, I also learned the art of stick welding(which started my career in metal fabrication for the next forty yrs.)I figured Herman liked my work because of the nickel raise he gave me every wk. I left shortly after Herman died when a daughter took over the business and shortly went out of business after that, but I know for the many years he built his business with great pride, and he treated his employees very well as I was told and seen. 💯🇺🇸

In one of the Dean Martin MATT HELM MOVIES he drove a 1970's station wagon, when they stopped he pushed a button the back opened up and a tent with a floor unfolded and inflated, I never did figure out how they got that turret top refrigerator to unfold, they are made of steel. ( I know it was movieland magic, they wheeled the refrigerator in the tent when they were not filming).

I`m still the proud owner of 20 ft 1972 Explorer with dodge running gear 413 ci bluprinted engine 727 transmission. It passes everything on a hill. Beautiful layout. Only downside was plywood sides covered in vinyl, lots of exterior maintenance. This article reminds me of a friend that used to own a Cortez 24 ft with a 225 slant 6, what hoot!

I found and traded a very complete Shasta camper for a bag of homegrown electric lettuce that was used as a drinking shack on a old farm in Medicine hat. It has the canned ham shape with Thor helmet wings as i like to call them. I will be restoring it in the near future after i finish restoring my 440 Cuda. I plan on pulling it behind my restored 1965 Impala big block.

@@tabp8448 No it was just one OZ. of home grown before it was legal to grow it so figure maybe 200.00 Canadian. It was just an abandoned summer night drinking/smoking shack to her. Tires were old but still held air so i hooked it up and brought it home. Still own it and still holding air.

You can see many elements in these campers that are found in the current trend of off road and all terrain campers. Bat wing'ish awning just after the intro for example. The emphasis on low weight and limited footprint. Ruggedized suspensions and canvas pop-ups. Good video, thanks.

Personally I have two choices for a vintage conversion. *My choice for RV conversion would be a Neoplan Jumbocruiser Articulated Double Decker bus to RV. *My choice for travel trailer would be a 1954 Ventoura Loft Liner converted to gooseneck travel trailer. Both options would be done up in a high-end art deco styling inside and out, so I could name either the Land Liner.

By the way, that Dodge Travco is NOT a Class A Motorhome. Motorhomes based on vans are Class B. I would have expect the producers of this video to actually know what they are talking about!!! Also, if that Glastron is 19' tall I'm the President of Peru!!!! And, by the way, you don't culminating INTO something. You culminating AS something. Finally (in for a dime, in for a dollar) it is IN which of these you were taking the trip NOT which of these you were taking the trip IN. I enjoyed your video - as you can tell, I WAS paying attention... My first experience was a 3 week trip with my parents in 1964 in their 56 Chev pulling about an 18' Shasta.

I don't care for the 'tent' style camper vehicles because of security reasons. Just not enough protection from criminals, wild animals and the elements. 4:48 - The Discoverer looks like the NASA Space Shuttle !!! 5:14 - Now we talkin' !!! I dig this camper! 5:38 - This be cool being pulled by a three wheel motorcycle! 6:17 - Classy. 7:39 - This one is on another level (pun intended). In a class of it's own .An alarm system would be absolutely necessary, for fear of people walking up the stairs in the rear. I would probably be 'one of those people' !!! The scooters (7:44) are FANTASTIC !!! 9:03 - A bit much. 14:46 - Interesting. Who needs a house with one of these?! 17:05 - Deluxe Hippy Mobile. The pop-up should have fiberglass sides, not tent material. "Going Mobile" The Who 17:47 - Been there, done that. The name "Snail" is fitting. I had a 1970 Volkswagon Westfalia camper van. "THE" Best vehicle I ever had by far. 18:59 - This one is a very clever and minimalistic design. 55:00 - This was me. 55:17 - My 70s VW campmobile. The pop-top hinged from the front, which technically, could have been driven with the top up, but I never tried it. 58:46 - This would be great for some gypsies or "Goth" kids !!! Or anyone with morbid tastes !!! Hearse-mobile! 59:15 - I could easily build this one myself! 59:25 - They'll never get that money back. 102:29 - This one is grooooovy. I could dig it !!! 125:49 - Mod.

This videos actually make me kind of sad. RVs used to be so cool, so many Unique Designs and personalities. Now it's just cookie cutter design. They all look exactly the same. No personality, no soul. I bought my first RV at the age of 15. My favorite was the 1976 American clipper, they built the series for a couple decades but the original design has some history to it. The American Clipper was a transport for the very last American passenger liner.

I’ve been fan of camping starting in 60’s P. U. W/homemade wood shell, p. U. Camper, to 1:11:29 a few VW Westfalia, to now a M/Benz Sprinter Era w/duely rear wheels. But a few yrs ago at a car show in Sacramento I Had a Vintage bug reignited to go back to when I viewed a restored late 30s Airstream towed by a surfers 50 Woody. I’d appreciate similar referrals.
