I feel the exact opposite about the Substance from Derrick. The first two acts have some interesting ideas but everything is so shallow. I understand that it's supposed to be over the top in terms of how its parodying the expectations placed upon women in the entertainment industry, and that many of the characters' shallowness is the point, but I feel like the movie uses that as a guise to not have to actually delve deeper into these issues with more subtlety and nuance. Like, what exactly about the movie's ethos was providing us with any new information or context about how women are mistreated that we didn't already know? The third act was when the movie actually did something interesting and different for once, rather than spoonfeeding its audience messages that make them feel smart.

Agree with Derrick on The Substance, it overstayed its welcome, and it was pounding the message into your head over and over, showing flashbacks over and over of parts we had already seen, explaining its own jokes, just very unsubtle. Might’ve been better if it was 30 mins shorter.
