The main reason for that line is that even if Ellen did die during her quest, both the house and the demon cat legitly rewind time to prevent the death. Proof of this exists in the game, like the spike trap will be covered in blood if you died there before then continued the game.

If your theory was accurate, then Ellen would have just died the first time and stayed dead. Her original body was gonna die with how much it was mutilated and decayed from the disease, the house wasn't going to keep Viola in Ellen's body alive.

Viola was certainly doomed the moment she first met Ellen. If Viola refused to participate in the body switch spell, Ellen probably would've killed her off in the same fashion as every other victim before. The result will be the same either way. Viola will suffer greatly as she died and her soul will make a pleasant meal for the demon. If for some miraculous reason Ellen decided to spare Viola (which Ellen has actually done to a few victims), that would be the best ending for sure! This is assuming Ellen spared Viola despite Viola not agreeing to swap bodies. Though the chances of that happening would be next to zero. I can imagine Ellen being enraged for working so hard to gain Viola's trust and realize it was all for nothing the day she needed it most.

I love how the 100th death refers to the real Viola in Ellen's mutilated and dying body getting killed by her own father. And seriously, no matter how many times I see that I am always filled with extreme levels of sorrow and rage. Because that ending is the cruelest of ironies and immoral beyond measure that it goes against all I stand for, and including the fact that you helped the true villain throughout the whole game the entire time is the biggest "fuck you" to me. I really hope that someday a sequel or an update to the game will be made which should be about the real Viola returning from the dead or as a subconscious in her real body due to her memories remaining in her body, and then having her reclaim her body and her life, ultimately killing Ellen in the end.

KirbyKips In the end of the game, the cat disappears after the father shoots Ellen's body, hinting that the cat was never really there, it was just a spirit, trapped by Ellen's magic, to guide Viola (or the witch) through the house. This is my theory: Since Viola (In Ellens body) passed away after being shot, the curse of the witch's house was broken, meaning the cats spirit was able to move on. So it's technically impossible for the cat to take possession of Viola, or Ellen's body .

MultiDJIC If you do the no-save ending, you find out the cat is a demon. The demon relied on the witch to survive, and he knew when Ellen's original body died, the magic would dissipate and destroy the house- the demon's spirit leaves the cat behind and the cat dies as a result. (though even after that ending, the cat still shows up after the father shoots Ellen's body...)

You often see Ellen hidden in the shadows whenever Viola dies. For example, when you steal the butterfly from the spider's web and find out the door is locked, you can sprint back up to the barrels and faintly see Ellen sitting on top of one of them. Though considering it's actually Ellen in Viola's body who's dying from all those traps, it's safe to bet Viola is always the purple-haired girl who silently watches you die.

Well, yes the villain does die in these endings but it's Viola's body being crushed. Viola in all these 'universes' will simply rot away and die slowly since she has no body to go back to. I suppose the only good end is if you don't die through the whole game and then allow 'the witch' to catch you. Maybe they could put that ending in.

Another kinda good ending is when you are getting chased by the legless girl, DON'T get Ellen's knife. This will make Ellen be in her actual body, and Viola in her actual body, too. Ellen gets killed by Viola's father and they run off. I think it's like that, anyways.

There is one that you totally missed. When you climb down the chimney on the fourth floor, back to the dining room on the first floor, and try to open the door in the kitchen that leads to the second floor stairs, it will be locked. If you go back up the chimney and descend down the floors to the stairs leading to the first floor, and attempt to open the door from the other side, you will still find it locked, and when you turn around, a statue will suddenly appear in front of you. If you choose to not move out of its way, it crushes you to death.
