I’ve wanted to learn BSL for ages, but what finally pushed be to start is a guy that goes to puppy training classes with me. He’s deaf and really struggled to understand the instructions given to him since no one there knows BSL. So I’m trying to learn a few basic things first to try and help him however I can. Hopefully one day I’ll be fluent enough to interpret for him to help him train his assistance dog.

hiya! I'm a dog trainer learning bsl mostly because of personal reasons (we should all learn it in primary school). there's also an interesting cross over with my work. in our classes we use sign language with the dogs- who learn it fast as they run on body language themselves. we mostly foster signs ad hoc according to the way the treat/ toy moves, but t'd be great to teach the dogs bsl signs!

@@maxwhite8616 I'm confused by your question. If it's about the person's nephew they don't have to share. it's something private and not everyone is willing to share that information. If it's about signing in general then signing is necessary to deaf people and nonverbal people so that they can communicate with others but sadly not everyone knows sign language please understand I don't want to be mean in my reply I just wanted to inform you ^^

Clairey definitely seeing it from a side-on angle helps a lot, I’m practising these 100 words in front of the mirror (trying to master three a day while I get washed, etc,) I don’t imagine I’ll ever be fluent, but one never knows when someone who signs is going to come into your work and I think it’s always encouraging to be able to communicate with those who sign, to the best of your own ability, in a language they understand. I’m profoundly deaf in one ear, and the masks of Covid make it impossible to lip read, so I’m hoping more people will adopt a signing approach. It only has benefits for all...!
@clairey64074 жыл бұрын
@@rainbowsandlove I completely agree! 😊 I'm the same - I'm not sure I'll ever be fluent, though I would like to be, but I try to pick up and practise what I can and maybe one day it will come in useful. What I find difficult about BSL is the way that some words, such as "know" has a different sign to its own negative, e.g. "don't know" whereas in a spoken language the negation would be usually caused by some other word (e.g. "je sais" / "je NE sais PAS" in French). These videos are great, though. I'm addicted!

@CommandingHands4 жыл бұрын
Try to use your dominant hand for all one-handed signs and let your dominant hand do the main movements for all two-handed signs. Swapping too often can cause confusion for the person you're signing to. For the other features of BSL (the head movements, facial expressions etc.), these are often referred to as non-manual features. These remain the same for both right and left-handers. Thanks for watching!
