Sincerely: you have done a wonderful thing, for yourself, your family heritage & for humanity. My paternal grandfather started as a coal miner, but “improved himself” becoming a school teacher. Along the way, he built two houses (both still standing) in Bega, New South Wales, unassisted. I have early childhood memories of a huge collection of tools in a ramshackle shed, mostly carpentry but also the tools a lumber worker used. Being a true Scotsman, he would not pay for something he could do for himself, he produced his own lumber. In the mid 1960s a decision was made to clean up. Everything was thrown away. Somehow I managed to hang onto a pair of pincers & a drill brace. They have immense value to my mind….he died 2 years before my birth, I have these tools and I have what my own father said about him. Kindest regards & season’s greetings from Oz

This is what true restoration should be: tools meticulously cleaned, repaired when needed, and oiled to preserve and bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Most importantly, it’s about maintaining the history and character of these tools. Your great-grandfather is surely watching you with pride, smiling as he tells Jesus, Our Saviour, how proud he is of your work. Well done.

I was gifted an old carpenter's chest similar to this one. It has a multitude of tools in it as well. Some of them are from the turn of the last century. I've dated several planes and saws to 1910 or even older. It's so humbling to know a man made his living out of this chest. I'm restoring these tools one at a time.

What an amazing set of tools, and such a lovely "sympathetic " restoration. I really like the way you left some of the marks of time, accumulated during your Grandfather's time while using these tools. I would offer to buy it, but know such a family heirloom would never be subjected to being sold, as part of the value is always in the story that surrounds them.

Fantastic work. A really sympathetic restoration. I have a large collection of woodworking tools, most of which are over a century old. As a previous commentator says the quality of new ones tools, with some notable exceptions, cannot compare with the materials and construction of their older counterparts.

On wedged planes, tap the back of the plane with a mallet to loosen the wedge. Don't pound on the notch of the wedge, you can break it off. Other than that, you did a very nice job.

Hoi! Goeie job!!

about the planes, not only the sole need to be flat, but also perpendicular to the bed of the iron. Block plane misses two parts, the chip breaker and the screw to adjust the angle from the iron. I feel bad about this, had to tell you. Judging by the hard time you had on plywood with them.. you should give it another shot with that in mind. Your sharpening looks just fine, you could have a way better result with a nice leveled sole. You wont use them in this state.
@francisbemrose92984 ай бұрын
While I don't agree with every thing you've done to these lovely tools, they're yours to do with as you will. I would however suggest you learn how to use them properly. The planes were all set way too coarsely and moulding planes and plough planes are usually started from the far end to help consistency. Good luck and enjoy!
