It was 100 years ago when the electric railway service in Berlin went into regular operation on August 8, 1924. Reason enough for me to go to the place of railway history, to the Nordbahnhof, which was still called Stettiner Bahnhof until 1950. So, full of curiosity, I get on the S-Bahn and head straight into the heart of the city.
The train slowly hums into the station. Nordbahnhof is written in old German letters at the exit to Invalidenstrasse. The train station itself, a product of the 1950s, is simple and functional and is reminiscent of the old days with decorative elements. I step outside on Invalidenstrasse. A spacious, bright place welcomes me. What did it look like here 100 years ago? I stop and let the hustle and bustle at the old Szczecin train station happen before my eyes. Dive into the historical times of late Victorian Berlin.
The old train station, as it once looked, no longer exists. It was not completely destroyed in the Second World War, but during the GDR era it was decided to redesign the station and level out the architectural ensemble that still existed. After the border was closed in 1961, the Nordbahnhof completely degenerated into a ghost station and only became a functioning railway line again after the fall of the Wall. To this day you can still see the old tracks paved with the names of the destinations.
The old Szczecin railway line has long since become history and can only be understood on old postcards.
