I feel like at the end of the drama, the script writer will pull a twist like: this is secretly a Xian Xa drama or all the characters just snorted cocaine and now they are hallucinating.

The plot and script is quite boring and forced. Apart from that, one thing that bother me is how they easily & repeatedly use the word "save a person" in some episodes. I don't know if doctors/ TCM doctors in China use that word in everyday life. But using the dialogues like " I'm a doctor so I will save people" multiple times just seems so cringe to me. Maybe because I'm a doctor & no actual doctor will say such words in real life unless they have a savior complex.

Not because of blood.

If you took the time to watch the later episodes, that myth is actually challenged and is a plot twist but I won't give away any spoilers. All the things that AvenueX and others commenters take issue are deliberately done - they are plot elements used to cast a light on outdated thinking and short sightedness of the characters.

I mean as long as lusi is there, the ml is nice and it is watchable I'm okay with it. A keluli can do it even if its illogical 😂😂
@alicianavit3968 Жыл бұрын
I like this story, though. Maybe it's because I study psychology and find that their characters make sense. Zhao Lusi's character is plausible, because not all children who come from orphanages are smart, cunning, or know how to get by in life. Many of them genuinely have no idea how to behave. Throughout the drama, she gives us glimpses of her life as an orphan, which shows how she has no idea how the society works. All her outbreaks makes sense. Then there's the wife, who always listens to her husband. Remember, they come from a long line of TCM practitioners, so they practically learn about the wisdom of their ancestors. If you grow up in a place like this, it's likely you'll turn out the same way. The lawyer thinks she is to blame for the death of a fellow lawyer because when they shook hands, she said: is better if they never see each other again. To her, this is the same as putting a curse on him. She was shocked by what happened, so it makes sense that she takes time off work to study TCM. She decides she wants to be a doctor instead of a lawyer because of what she has learned in TCM. I probably like this story because I see it from this point of view. but sure, there are things that don't make sense as the inheritor thing. Up until now, I still don't understand it completely. Who I really don't like in the drama is the guy with glasses who comes from a poor family. Don't know if Chinese families are like his parents who constantly want money. They give off the impression of being some sort of leech. Because of his poor self-esteem, he is easily pressured into doing things he knows are wrong, and this is why I find the character so annoying: he always ends up lying.
@1happydew Жыл бұрын
STT:"for me the bloodline isnt important, who my biological parents are isnt important as well" RXZ replied: Parents are important. The reason why the chinese culture has such a long history and successors is not because of lineage, it's actually the cultural lineage. It's not the bloodline. It's actually the Confucian orthodoxy. The real inheritance should be the thought, a continuation of the spirit".

I also liked this drama BECAUSE of the story. I thought it was refreshing because it was not the typical rom-com and although I’m not an expert I thought the characters made sense for the reasons you mentioned I also found the guy with the glasses irritating but that just means he did a good job portraying his character since I’ve seen so many comments saying the same thing😂 (they found him irritating) but what I did not understand was how he was accepted back in the group or how he got the girl he liked after what he did (I would not have been so forgiving). What I especially liked was the insight to TCM culture. This for me was very interesting and also how Zhao Luisi’s character slowly developed.

First, Jiang clan's acupuncture technique was not lost. The middle-age man mooching off his wife and wife's family was a student. There are practitioners all over the world. Drama showed four such people returning to China during Chinese New Year and paying respect to FL. Lawyer lady has a family "curse", bloodline again, such that no one lives past 40. Also, this drama project has been fully supported by lady x hometown(? or at least in the same province) censorship department. Meaning that it's fine with mixing superstition with CTM, outdated thoughts/practices, unethical/immoral behaviors and etc. Lots of self-proclaimed CTM doctors are quacks, charlatans, and snake-oil salesmen, aka scammers. Someone gave an example: Drank talisman paper ashes to dissolve a chicken bone lodged in the throat. Didn't work. The bone had to be extracted at the hospital. That 300-yr old ceramic roof tile + urine from a male virgin + (yellow/brown) liquor cure for paralysis due to severed spine was later admitted to be a nonsense "white lie" made up to give the patient hope. Once a 300-yr old ceramic roof tile was found, they had to somehow keep the deception going for their medical ethics. Will a miracle happen again? It's possible that the scriptwriter wrote a satire but everyone played it straight. She supposedly studied under an CTM expert and this expert consulted on the drama. She likely witnessed patriarchal, sexist, narcissistic, self-aggrandizing, self-involved, double/multiple-standard (strict to others, lenient to oneself) men lying, deceiving, or even scamming, while practicing CTM. Their domesticated wives might have misgivings but stood by the husbands. They can rationalize anything to their benefit. Thus, every main character in this drama, as the first resort, gaslights, deceives, lies, and/or takes advantage of one another/their patients. Great scammers can be naturally born and/or trained under great masters. They are great at reading people and taking advantage of weaknesses. When scams are done "correctly", everything to gain and nothing to lose. She probably figured a traffic actress would be cast as FL. Thus, she wrote FL as a common "growth" type in idol drama - impulsive troublemaker - because that is in traffic actresses' comfort zone. In addition to cast member fans, plenty of older and old people in China still have "feudalistic" attitudes and beliefs. This drama hits them in the right spot.

A hunch. Medical resources are in shortage worldwide. Old people tend to "consume" disproportionate amount of such resource near their lives' end. This drama might have hidden intention of persuading or gaslighting them or seriously ill patients to seek alternatives. Quality instead of quantity, for instance. However, "quality" as presented using an late-stage cancer patient who went into spontaneous remission due to climbing mountains and kowtowing in temples is misleading. She appeared too well to represent late-stage cancer patient. TCM physicians aren't the only one emphasizing mindfulness and healthy lifestyle. Western medicine doctors would do the same if they had time (plus not concerned about malpractice lawsuits), and if their patients wouldn't do as they (patients) wished then demanded "shortcuts" to fix ensuing health issues. I understand lots of people have few choices due to circumstances of modern society - lack of (or unwillingness to devote) patience, time, energy and financial resources - which cannot be remedied by CTM either.

Modern medicine looks into causes too, just saying. I think it's the standard nowadays because the treatments are always changing with our growing knowledge about the diseases. And those knowledges are obtained by countless researches. That's why it's called the evidence- based medicine. It's also connected with other sciences like biology, chemistry and physics etc. For a drug, we can know its chemical structure, how it works in the body, its side effects exactly. And no one in modern medicine use prescriptions handed down from generation after generation. They use always evolving clinical guidelines tested by several trials to treat the patients. Big Pharmas are one thing but without modern medicine, most of us would have died before we reached the age of 5 from preventable diseases like polio cuz there are no vaccines. Our ancestors had to have so many kids back in the day (of course no modern medicine, no contraceptive pills), but most children died in childhood. Just compare the average lifespan before and after modern medicine.

OK I just finished this drama and I totally think you need to give this drama another chance AvenueX. It has a depth that most Chinese dramas that are tropey do not have. And all the things you ranted about are resolved in the end. As I mentioned, the script writer used a lot of these - the successor idea, husband and wife relationships, etc to make a commentary on them, all without being patronizing and still staying through to the characters within the confines of their family dynamics. You will see towards the end of the drama how these perceptions are all upended. If there is one word to describe what this drama is about - it would be redemption - how the characters (and us humans) are flawed, no matter how respected or rich or successful - and we all have to find our own path in life. I actually learnt some life lessons from this drama - which is quite rare indeed. So I really suggest you give it another try. It's a pity that your rant has put your viewers off this drama.

I just watched the first episode, and I quit it. As much as I love Zhao Lusi, I just can't. I think they're taking this from the wrong perspective. Instead of "resurrecting" the lost art of acupuncture from this great heritage medical family (by blood), I'd prefer that older guy brought Lusi to his family to "repay" her family, because his privately run medical practice profited a lot from the technique found by Lusi's family. And from Zhao Lusi's point of view, it would be more intriguing, if in the beginning, she may want to exploit this guy and his kindness, but in the end, she somehow finds a connection to her root through practicing traditional medicine. And finding out why she left alone in this world, because basically most of her family members are sacrificing themselves for the greater good. So, it's not that she's not loved as a child. But she would find a way to balance between loving herself while allowing herself to love and care and wanting to help others. That's the story that I would find interesting. It makes much more sense, instead of this bowing to great-aunt teacher.... I was like... what the heck!!! *face-palm

Family ties was another aspect I thought was interesting on different levels and with different characters. I thought the love theme was handled just right. Nothing overdone in this area as both leads were committed to TCM and to each other. Mental health was address as well with emotional abuse and online bullying being the main topics. The character should’ve had a Phycologist address her condition instead of the TCM approach. Holding hands with someone is not the way to tackle a mental disease. Overall, I enjoyed many aspects of Gen Z and would recommend it if you want a change from the same themes in Chinese dramas. Stay safe💃🏽

2 dramas from today: sleepless night (mr insomnia waiting for love) and murder notes, are both pretty brain damaged (maybe from alcohol consumption).

But like weren't they friends with her parents or something? At least that's what i thought/understood while watching the drama, maybe i didn't understand because of subtitles but i thought the grandparents werer friends of her family and that's why they took her in, like if my friend died i decided to raise their child. I thought they were looking for her during all the time she was in the orphanage, also that they had the knowledge of the thecnique and were going to teach her in the future.

Maybe you see in other aspects not so important in this drama. The important aspect on this drama is the bond between master & apprentice and a lot of humor. It’s just a family drama no need to be so serious.

Well I actually like this drama. Not because I like Zhao Lusi, even most of her fans are questioning the drama plot as well. I like it because all the characters are actually exist in real life. All those nonsense that you mentioned which seems like can only happen 100 years ago, are actually exist in current life, maybe you’ve never seen them. And all the fantasy nonsense plot and tropes are somehow embedded in quite a lot of cdrama. And THIS drama feels like they are trolling and calling them out. See how many people criticising them? Yes. That will hit them on the spot where it hurts. 😅 yes. Its bizarre. But those bizarreness exist in real life. 😂 also I just enjoy the show where I dont need to think…cause working are already stressful, i just need to watch a ridiculous & too good to be true drama that although the plot is 👎🏼 but the acting is convincing. 😂

Lusi does a good job in this drama. Her char is a bit annoying in the first couple of eps, but there is a certain growth of char. All chars in this drama are so alive, so real, full of flaws.

😮I’m disappointed of your review as I did enjoyed the Gen Z so much and I’m not Chinese and comes from Sydney, Australia 😊 I’m like 👍🏾 the Chinese medicine and this is just a drama and the actors did excellent job in portraying their part 😊💕 Everyone have different taste and your taste of drama for this is not good 😌 It became number 1 drama after aired the middle part and when it finally finished ✅ In my opinion, after watching many Korean and Chinese drama for over 5 years, I will still give it 8+ because, it’s a great Chinese drama 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾❤️

So I TOTALLY DISAGREE - I feel you are too harsh here. I usually agree with your assessment and ironically it was here I discovered Romance of Tiger and Rise and really became a big fan of Zhao Lusi. I am quite enjoying the drama - its a bit slow in places but the introduction to TCM is great and I did feel like they could have set the drama in the 1980s and it would have been just as appropriate but honestly the portrayal of some of the characters and dynamics I can relate to even in an overseas Chinese family. There are still a lot of patriarchal families in this day and age and I feel the script writer is calling this type of behavior out. I appreciate her not shying away from unpleasant aspects of male dominated families where males feel entitled based on gender. Also nothing wrong with them taking in TouTou - why not try to train her? Anyway so far, I like the more realistic portrayals of characters who are all flawed in some way and looking forward to seeing their character development. It's kind of refreshing to see Zhao Lusi in a drama that is not solely focused on romance. Yes, the ML (father figure played by Wu Gang) is not really likable and his wife seems a pushover but honestly, relationships like this are not so far fetched in real life and this is more a slice of life drama. Anyway - I have only seen up to episode 19 but it seems like it might get kinda melodramatic so not sure I am so keen on that. But we will see.

Also they have a nice environmental message and living in more harmony with yourself and nature. So give this drama a try esp of you are a ZLS fan - just don't expect it to be a typical ZLS rom-com.

Your review is too harsh, and very nit-picking. This drama is far from perfect but at the same time far far far from being the worst as you have proven yourself by admitting that you have actually watched 18 episodes (I bet you would not stop at 18). LOL, The drama has a lot of rather inspirational messages. It has salient advice. It never tries to say that TCM is better than Western Medicine, instead, they are complementary. TCM is preventative while Western medicine is the cure for illnesses like cancer, etc. This drama is entertaining with a good cast ensemble. Wu Gang proved himself as a master of comedic timing. Zhao LuSi is only getting better and better, she is the girl to watch for the future. I can totally recommend this drama. Don't be easily swayed by reviews because viewing experience is subjective.

I’m pretty sure she just watched up to 18 because that’s part of her job as a drama reviewer to watch a show at a certain point to finally say something about it and decide if they’ll continue watching or not.
@globalgranary Жыл бұрын
@@unamed2516 Sure!!! LOL, It does not take 18 episodes to know whether a drama is crap or not! I review dramas as well. Two to five episodes are enough to tell whether what you are watching is worth your time.

Also, the way RTZ handled Meng Meng was kinda weird for me?? I mean, i am an western medicine doctor, so naturally we are advised to maintain a healthy distance between patients and ourselves while still being empathatic and kind. But All i saw RTZ character do was act like he was medicine/treatment himself for Meng Meng. While i do not understand TCM and it's approaches, i don't know how sticking to the patient 24/7 , having them live with you and throwing a fit at the slightest mention of maintaining a distance with the patient, is beneficial to the patient in the long term. Like, if anything, you are making the patient dependant on your very existence. Just my 2 cents.

@@pachelag7504 the problem is most people on here are just watching a drama. They don’t know the nuances. Unlike us the casual viewer, Avenue X has a trained eye. Unless you have worked in the industry you cannot see it. Being from mainland China she can explain why certain things are wrong. I’m learning Mandarin and I find a lot of mistranslations. Those mistranslations actually take away from the drama. Chinese dramas are written for a Chinese audience. Because I am learning the language, culture and history of China I can further appreciate Avenue X’s reviews. We may not like the same drama but I appreciate her insight. It helps me in my language growth.
