I'm an old retired pipeline welder and a recovering hog farmer. I've wanted to build these for years, so I just bought two pieces of (55 inch x 10 feet and 48 inch x 7 feet long) pipe to get started in the Spring. I live at the Washington State, Idaho, Canadian border and it gets damned cold up here. I've been engineering these in my head for years and you've implemented some of the ideas I've thought of such as the deflector plate and insulated bottom and fire box. I'm glad you posted this! It looks like you've done a fine job and you should do quite well at it! Keep em coming, your doing just fine!👈I'll send you some pics when this snow melts off. I don't have a shop up here and can't breathe in the cold. Have fun and stay safe! 👍 Liked and subscribed!🙋

I built an Ugly Drum Smoker and lined the bottom with fire bricks, the trick is that you have to start with a roaring fire to get the bricks hot in the winter, after that it is quite easy to hold the temperature by keeping a small fire going.

I am currently running a pecos up in Alaska. I took some left over ceramic insulation and stainless ducting from work, welded the fire box shut, cut all the crap off, insulated it, and insulated the bottom side of the cook chamber. I was running an old blanket on top of the pit but with everything else insulated I had to take the blanket off to keep temps down and that was at about 20°F. I’m using about half as much wood now. I will probably be implementing this idea on the 250 I’m currently building. Thanks for putting it out there.

Got a sub simply because this is one of the most well exolained and infomative offset/tank build videos out there. The fact that there are also original and innovative ideas mage it that much better.

This was a great video! Don’t downplay your video skills. Keep ‘em coming. I’m just getting started with welding so I can make a 120 gallon smoker from an old compressor tank I picked up. I’d love to see some of your build videos in the future. 👊👍

Very nice pits brother! So heat rises so why insulate the bottom of cook chamber??
@pigironpatina985
@pigironpatina985 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! So sometimes pitmasters cook in extreme cold, the show must go on. And that cold zaps heat from below grate level. Especially on a 16 foot cook chamber. But even at 60 degrees outside, the insulated bottom pit had 18 degrees more heat under grate, than the one without. (As explained in video) these have both been running in south Carolina in 25 degree weather performing amazingly!!

I’m curious what is the cost of one these? Is there a big cost difference between insulated and non insulated?
@pigironpatina985
@pigironpatina985 Жыл бұрын
17,500 without bottom, 19,000 with. But using almost half the wood. So the savings on firewood really shines.
@deant876
@deant876 10 ай бұрын
Could the temp difference be because it's a smaller smoke chamber?
@pigironpatina985
@pigironpatina985 10 ай бұрын
In this instance I guess that could be a contributing factor!! But the insulation is really putting in the work down around low outdoor temps.
