I am a brand new rider and went to the harley dealer to see a harley breakout.....I was offered to take a couple bike on a test drive the street bob and the fat bob 114 The fat bob 114 was so comfortable and easy to ride for me at 5ft 9...190LB. the riding position I felt like I could ride the bike long distance.. Since I am not experienced and have nothing to compare it to, I was so glad to see this review from somebody who rides.....for me the bike shocked me,,,it pulls so hard it freaked me out...I would not even think of upgrading the engine to perform more..hehe. holy crap this thing was power beyond what I thought it would be like...I can't imagine ever needing more bike than this....it was very managable in town and on the highway it was only the wind but the seat seemed to hold me in place not like the street bob that I could feel myself sliding back and I had to use my arms and my grip to hang on...the tension made me feel I did not have total control during acceleration ....the fat bob was wayyyyy more comfortable and now I am even considering buying this one instead of the breakout.....A bike I did not even consider beause of the look now has won me over.. I was so awesome to ride....thank for this review!!! I was not wrong!!

Man, I have seen the new Harleys on saturday and fell in love with the Fat Bob. What a nice bike!!! I would put a bar a little higher, like a dirt bike bar, I think it could look cool. Great bike man, enjoy! It seems to have a smaller distance between axles, this improves the handling.

Nice review. I ride a ‘13 Fat Bob. The new ones are too Ducati-esque for me. But. In regards to the excellent lighting, and the handling, both plus and minuses, its the same with my older one. The dual headlights-amazing night time vision. Even without the LED bar. And the handling, is phenomenal! Especially when I upgraded to Avon Cobras front and rear. I came from sportbikes. I’m used to leaning over. Hard parts are what keep it from going farther. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve scraped the pegs or exhaust. Haha. Hopefully, you’re still enjoying it!

Great review mate. I had a earlier Fatbob and never quite got used too the forward controls around corners. The new Fatbob seems to have all the upgrades needed for these great bikes. I learnt to push my heel into the peg and lean off to get the most out of the design. Great fun bike. Cheers.

Nice update. I agree with almost everything you said. I'm about 800 miles in and the bike is just plain solid. It does whatever I want it to do and that makes riding alot smoother because I don't have to worry about catering to the bike while I'm riding. I just give my input and the bike takes care of the rest. Definitely post an update on the gas cap. The cap rattle is brutal on mine. Outside of trying a new cap I'm not sure what to do.

Fat Bob kick stands must all be cursed, friend of mine bought a brand new CVO Fat Bob a few years ago he brought it over to show me, he pulled it into my shop and proceeded to drop the kick stand as he was doing so I noticed he was messing with the kick stand some but didn't think anything of it he got off the bike and we just starting talking about how awesome it looked and how the 110 engine performed, you know just shooting the shit about the bike. I mentioned to him that it looked heavyish and he said it wasn't to bad and motioned me to jump on so I gladly obliged which turned out to be a big mistake as I went to dismount I kicked out the kick stand and went to jump off and the fucking thing hit the ground damaging the fuel tank and a few other odds and ends, I felt like shit and he said he should have warned me cause that almost happened to him a couple of times, shit my soft tail Deuce never had any issues with the kick stand I just fired it out in one motion and jumped off. Anyways I insisted I pay for a new tank I think it cost me $3500, Canadian that custom CVO paint don't come cheap, when I spoke to the local dealer they mention that the Fat Bob Dyna has a shitty kick stand system so obviously the curse has now proceeded to the soft tail family on this new Fat Bob, yah Harley is one confusing outfit I watched your previous vid on the shitty bulbs on the turn sigs, unreal Harley never seizes to amaze me with their weird shit but at least they are now throwing some more horses to their engines that has been my biggest bitch about their scooters no balls when it came to performance.

Fat Bobber here as well. Didn't add Stage-kit but can see how some would want it. Stock 114 has good power at highway speeds but the Stage-4 from what I hear is something special. But being in Ohio with 70mph speed limits ... opportunities to go triple digits seem too few and far between to really enjoy Stage-4 the way it is meant to be enjoyed. Lord Jesus willing, I'll save that Stage-cost to put toward the CVO Road Glide. Amen. By the way. For leg cramp relief, recommend the mustache crash bar. If you still don't have good leg position, you can later add foot pegs but being 5'10" the bar by itself is great to stretch forward. But if you have Stage-kit installed don't know if different air filter, or an add-on engine fan will interfere with stretching your legs. But having the ability to stretch legs can be the difference between taking a longer ride ... or ... not taking a longer ride. On another note, if you don't want to swap whole exhaust; recommend Two Brothers Racing slip-ons for this bike. Sound is very nice and doesn't angle up like stock mufflers. Remember, if you swap exhaust and remove the catalytic converters ... you probably voided your warranty. Slip-ons are an improvement from stock and won't void warranty. The Tommy-gun exhaust shields can stay in place which is probably just as good for heat protection as going with fiber-wrap to cover that section you said is a problem for passengers. Peace of Lord Jesus upon you and yours. Amen.

Has changing the exhaust hindered the lean angle on the right side? I read somewhere that the reason for the upswept stock exhaust was to aid in providing more lean angle. By the way, enjoy watching ur videos. I'm looking forward to getting this bike early next year

YUP. This thing MUST have mid controls from factory or at least make it a no cost option. The extra performance and sportiness build into the machine it's been held back by those shitty forward controls. Good work, Sr., keep it coming! 👌👍
@depthsounderdave
@depthsounderdave 6 жыл бұрын
JIGA BACHI I would describe these as forward-mid controls. They aren't shitty by any means but it definitely comes down to rider preference. I don't know that mid controls would unlock any hidden capability. You would have to go with a much higher seat and really push those controls up to get more lean angle.

Just got my 2018 FatBob 114. I am about your weight and size I am 6'3" close to 300lbs. My first impression is the bike is to quiet for a Harley, the seat is sticky. I am an owner of 3 Hd's. ElectraGlide, Standard, and Heritage Softy. So I am used to a laidback seat position, with apehangers. This by far is the quickest Harley I own. I am impressed with the inverted forks, the led headlight, and dual front disks. Feels like a crossover from a Hd to a sport bike. Lots of fun!

Christopher Reade Did you have to change out the suspension at all? Except for adventure bikes, the Harleys like this seem to be the only bikes to cater suspension for us biggins. I'm about 330 so I'm never going to find a sports bike without having to change out suspension. Hopefully that new naked Harley coming out will be good on suspension too.

Bredaxe I just bought one and i weigh in at 350ish, and no the stock suspension handles me just fine i would say, hell with the adjustable suspension i would almost wager that you could put a lighter person on the back and it would still handle it decently.

@RaceWithTime
@RaceWithTime 5 жыл бұрын
the "gear indicator" is actually just a calculation of between engine speed and vehicle.... when the clutch is pulled in it has no way to calculate the gear because vehicle speed and engine speed are no longer related. You can actually trick it to display the wrong gear by slipping the clutch while moving. A number of manufactures do this to save cost/complexity of having gear position sensors.

This is an older video, but I took a quick glance in the responses and didn't see an answer to this. The gear indicator is based on comparing the engine speed to the wheel speed. That's why it disappears in neutral. It's NOT a sensor on your lever. Harley has been doing this since at least 2009. It mostly works when it matters. But yeah, I understand how when you're at a stoplight you want to know if you need to continue hitting the shifter, like Metric bikes give you that information. Harley has always been good at getting the big picture, but they have always cheaped out on the details, and left those up to the end user to figure out. It's like the opposite of Honda, for example.
@LOLewie
@LOLewie 6 жыл бұрын
because the gear indicator is a computation of RPM vs speed. clutch pulled in, RPMS drop. does not compute.

I think all bikes loose the gear indicator with the clutch pulled in. Your transmission is not in gear if the clutch is not engaged. I think its normal. Maybe if someone knows of a bike that is different please let us know...

My concern that Harley allows up to 0.012" max runout tolerance on the pinion shaft of the pressed together crankshaft. Any competent mechanic knows that the max allowable runout should not exceed 0.001", because at 0.003" of runout, bad things can start to happen like eating up cam support plate bushings and oil pump bushing and the fact that the crank can twist out of true, as well. And having a PLASTIC cam chain tensioner on the roller chain drive for the cam operation is a very weak link in the cam operation. They should have returned to Metal Gear Drive on the cam operation like the EVO single cam engine had. And they should have a bolted together crankshaft like the EVO single cam engine had too.

Thanks for the update, I do have a question for you...in the first video you commented the rear cylinder wanted to cook your leg in traffic, does the bike run any cooler since you changed the exhaust and retuned the bike? You may want to change over to synthetic oil to help also. I use Amsoil and noticed a difference with my Heritage softail. Thanks again
@averageguyantics409
@averageguyantics409 6 жыл бұрын
Its doesn't seem to run any cooler or hotter then before. I think its more of the way the seat is designed. It has a fairly narrow nose that exposes a good bit of the cylinder head, which in turn legs your leg rest right on top of it. I have a sundowner seat coming soon so we'll see if that tightens it up. I'll be switching to amsoil with my next service just for peace of mind.

Great video, I share some of your insights on this bike. Overall, it is like you said, the best bike I have ever ridden. A different Harley for sure. I wonder if I would be more comfortable with a forward peg control (more room for the legs, the service guy told me that it is possible to install the kit in this bike), Do you have any thought on that? By the way, I reached 5,200 miles last week! Not thinking in changing, unless some crazy dealer offers me a brand new Breakout!!

Nice videos. I’m looking to get into motorcycles. I’m 6’1”, 230 with a knee that doesn’t like too much flex. Sat on all the Softtails in the dealership and this one seemed to fit me best. Was comparison shopping Triumph (too small), Yamaha (too cheap), and Kawasakis (more rocket-bike feel). Would like an around-town bike with the occasional short road trip with passenger. Would you recommend this bike for a newbie like me?
@averageguyantics409
@averageguyantics409 6 жыл бұрын
I always recommend a used bike for a beginner unless money really is no object. Odds are you'll lay it down or knock it over at some point while your learning. If you're still looking at new the Fat Bob is a fine choice as just like most any other H-D the sky's the limit with customizing it to fit your person. I'm 6'1" 260lbs with paratrooper knees and nothing seems to bother me to bad. The only thing I'm looking to add to make it a bit more comfortable is some stirrup pegs to pick my heels up, and a sundowner seat for some more cushion. Before you buy, you might also want to check out the new Indians, their sweet bikes too. Best of luck.

AverageGuyAntics cool thanks for the info. I’ll probably put drop pegs and maybe a small engine guard on whatever bike I get. I hope to buy one that I can keep for several years rather than rotating trade-ins while I “grow into” a bigger bike, while I look like a big clown on a tiny bike. Lol 😝 Every time I look at other models I seem to come back to this one even though I haven’t been on a test ride. I like your mods! Take care.

I also have one and when my legs start getting tired, as long as I have at least ankle highs on, I can fully extend my legs and just rest them on the pegs. Maybe I'm the perfect height, I'm about 5'11 but it's pretty damn comfortable for me when I do that.

@averageguyantics409
@averageguyantics409 6 жыл бұрын
Umm, I think the warranty voiding myth runs a little to rampant. I had the aftermarket exhaust on when the dealer noticed water in my speedometer, the rubber missing from my foot peg, and the vibration in my gas cap, all of which have been warrantied. In order for them to deny a warranty claim it has to be shown how the aftermarket add-on contributed to the damage.

So been debating what to get.. in Houston..straight flat roads mostly..what would you get.. open to any brand? Something fun n to run around on.. live near the country.

Just depends on what you want to get out of it and budget. I had a ton of fun on my old dual sport klr 250 running back country dirt roads.

I don't know why a gear indicator is so important to some riders. Maybe because I've never had one.

Hi great video. I'm locked into purchase 2018 fat bob in next couple weeks. Happy to swap your forward controls with my new mids. I'm not planning on leaning much anyway. Only catch is I'm in Australia. Will cost postage but lot cheaper for both of us! Let me know!

Fat bob or street bob? The only ones that come with mids are street bobs and the low rider. If it is a street bob I'm game.

Hey have u been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic ? Main reason why I ask is because I plan to commute on this bike and usually on the way back to work there’s a lot of traffic so I wonder how the bike handles the heat and how hot this engine gets? Is it like unbearable cuz of the heat
@averageguyantics409
@averageguyantics409 6 жыл бұрын
I live in tourist hell so traffic is the norm. The bike seems just fine as far as heat but like most all Harley's, sit long enough and things start getting roasty on the ol nutsack. That and your clutch hand certainly gets a workout.

i have the same bike and my speedo would get moisture inside of it and make it hard to see the mph. i changed the seat and couldn't get it off because of the grab handle so just cut it.

Can the bike be lowered? The rear fender looks way too high above the rear wheel.

I don't see why not. I have the preload set a bit on the stiff side since I ride two up a lot. The adjuster actually works and if I soften it up it sinks a good bit once your weight is on it.

Thanks for the honest reviews..great videos....But I don't understand spending 17000+ on a bike with alot of complaints about it then spend another 5-6000 to fix the stuff you hate within the first few weeks or months of having it....at the end of it you may end up spending 30000 and still complain about the bike...
