I agree. Obviously Becca, with her vast video experience, will find a consumer grade slider for noise reduction "fine". The level of control in software like Adobe Audition, etc is extremely powerful in comparison. But the Pixel's audio magic eraser, with its ability to easily dial background or other unwanted noise up and down, is more than fine. For the masses, it's amazing. I think a lot of people will find this really useful or certainly fun to play with.

Yeah, Becca was a little more critical in her tone for this review than usual. She didn't even mention the improved low light performance across all 3 sensors nor the improved selfie performance for the Pro. Both of these make the 8 Pro a significant upgrade over the 6 or 7 series.

Standard iPhone photos have yellow and green hue over them. It's a well known fact. Front facing cameras cannot get the skin color right. I'm just confused how someone so experienced says that Pixel is struggling with color accuracy while iPhone isn't.

I tested the iPhone 15 pro Max for 2 weeks before returning because the colors were terrible compared to my pixel 7 pro. Skin tones were especially (and consistently) bad. Excited for my new 8 pro to show up today.

These are always fun. I find the Pixel really consistent at color, most specifically, white balance, it seems very predictable in fact sometimes too accurate, when you have an rgb light as a primary it balances it so much that it basically cancels the color cast, I kinda hated that but now with manual controls that won't be a problem 😉

I think the big thing about 8 pro personally is all about that locally processed AI with tensor g3. A lot of downloaded AI tool apps are all processed on the cloud.

For low light video performance, google has been toning down the amount of temporal noise reduction because it leads to motion artifacts in low light where a higher ISO is used.

The purpose of these companies to introduce macro mode is the main lens is not able to focus all parts of the subject to focus. As lens getting bigger and larger sensor gives more shallow depth and defocusses the subject away from the centre. Hence companies have to crop the ultra wide lens to bring the macro focus. The picture appear stretched and doesn’t give the correct aspect ratio. Pixel phones focus is much better indeed. If you try to use iPhone 13 onwards and S20 onwards , you will notice a blurry image when you take a pic of a text book page with letters. So smartly they introduced the crop of the ultra wide sensor and call it a macro photography. It’s not a dedicated macro lens. If you could add a macro lens to the regular wide lens the image looks stunning. I use it all the time. The problem is we have to carry the lens kit all the time! Hope a dedicated macro lens comes soon!

Yeah agreed. The displays on the 8 &8 Pro also got the best display award from Dxo. The brightest screens on the market, with the best cameras and best AI. These phones are damn good.

I looked at the side by side videos in person on a 4k screen, the pixel has improved a lot but it's still behind the iPhone with video quality, how it handles exposure, zoom transitions, higher resolution cinematic mode, and the iPhones ability to shoot in Pro Res Log. I'm not taking away from the Pixel, but technically it's not true.

Incredibly thoughtful review as always! I’m shocked more phone companies didn’t try to replicate the “Magic Eraser”. It’s simple, but incredibly effective. Google has AI on their side like no other brand. As an 15 Pro Max user, it should be coveted as iMessage is.

Samsung has "Object Eraser" which does the same thing. Also erases shadows and reflections. I believe the feature came with OneUI 5.1, though I'm not 100% sure. Idk how it compares to google's magic eraser, but it's pretty good.

Thank you for your honest take on this phone. I have the same gripe about the color shifting when I'm taking photos. Depending on the light and how it's reflecting off my floor or walls the colors will shift towards a really warm tone which drives me nuts!!! I have to change my angle or change the white balance. But with kids they don't always sit still long enough for me to change those settings.

How is this editing any different from what people have been doing for years on photoshop? Sure its more accesable but not like bad people wanting to do "bad" sat back waiting for this feature to one day enable them. Social media like facebook is already full of total junk. In the mean time the rest of us that just want a nice pick of friends or family without the random guy in the back that just does not want to get out of the shot, can now just remove him...doesnt make the photo any less of a reality

I understand your complaints with the telephoto lens in video mode, but I also think that for the average user this is actually a benefit. The pixel goes out of its way to enforce stabilization and lock on certain subjects. You were trying to pan, like a videographer would. But for the average user, just trying to take a video of something that's far away, this stabilization and subject locking is super useful.

Google does not make the camera hardware btw., they use Samsung sensors. Also the photos took with a Pixel 7 were preferred to the those by other brands in a blind test, especially since Pixel photos look way more natural than the others.

Color and tone wise, it's still pixel. But I don't know why this year there's an unusual softening going on. Almost as if they're using the same processing algorithm for the new sensor as they did with their older sensor. And while video boost seems impressive, just how many people would want to upload their night time videos and wait 24hrs before uploading, when the iPhone can clean up the video in real time and have it ready when you press the stop button?
