You can cut the length by having a heavier staff, like metal. The limited shaking makes it more difficult, but conditions the movement further. Awesome explanation, you got a sub out of me! Been doing this for years as well, just didn't know it was a known thing.

What length, diameter and type of wood do you recommend for this ?

It depends on the level. If one is just starting it should be a shorter and thinner pole. This is to not build bad habit due to lack of proper form. The stuff I’m using here is wax wood. It’s a good flexible wood and comes in varying lengths. Width will also be thinner at the head and thicker by the butt end. An inch and a quarter or an inch and a half thickness at the butt end is good to start and one can get it thicker when they feel they can handle it. For length start with something just a foot taller than you ideally and then you can work up to longer. The longer pole in this is 14ft.
