Oh man, the algorithm of KZbin just pointed me to one of your videos. I gotta say, I love your pace. As someone who has grown up with English as a second language from school, it's good to have scientific videos presented in a speed where you can actually follow. Also, one more subscriber from Germany. ;-)

Congrats on a 1000 and 2000 subs together, man, good that your audience is growing. You've already answered three of my questions before I asked them, but here's what I'd really love to hear is: What are the dangers of space travels at high speed, approaching the speed of light? Is it even possible? At such high speed, isn't even a small rock, the size of a walnut, able to breach the ship's hull? Maybe there already are theories on how that might be avoided? because clearly at such speed you just cannot maneuver to avoid anything... Anyway, if this looks interesting to you, I think I'm not the only one who would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance!

The following channel also did something similar for The Expanse: kzbin.info/door/EkuXQw10MFr3eOKNfzsfrQ Unfortunately the creator had stopped producing videos some years back. I think fans of this show wanted this type of analysis on The Expanse's science as it's a pretty major element to how the show functions and what makes it relatively unique, and a lot of people likely also don't have the physics knowledge themselves to know for certain whether stuff was done properly, which is where these types of videos really find their footing.

@@RyanRidden I have one. One day the ISS will need a replacement. It would be interesting to know if a rotating space station like in 2001: a space odyssey could be feasible. On a sidenote, what is the minimum gravity for human to feel okay-ish long term? I guess this can nicely be connected to belters and the expense.

Hey Ryan! Congratulations on all the new milestones! You've earned every one of those subs. I have a question about black holes and the speed of light: If light is unable to escape a black hole, is the gravitational force from the black hole pulling the light backwards at a faster speed than the speed of light? I've never really understood that.
@RyanRidden3 жыл бұрын
Great question! The best way to understand how gravity acts on light is to think in the ways that Einstein thought about gravity. In the Einstein framework mass bends and warps the fabric of the Universe. If you put a black hole down, lines in the Universe that were straight now appear bent to someone watching from far away. As for light it is a very simple object, and will always follow a straight line as it sees it in space. This means that to us far away from the back hole watching a bit of light passing by, we see it follow the straight line that is now bent by the black hole. The closer the path is to the black hole the stronger the bend to the straight line, until eventually a straight line through space now seems to wrap around the black hole. Any light that strays even closer to the black hole will follow a straight line that is bent all the way into the black hole itself. So the black hole doesn't really do anything to light. Instead, it simply bends space, and the light follows right along in a straight line in a bent spacetime. It might seem a bit strange to think this way, but all experiments so far say this is the case!
