If you put a layer of water above the lava, floating, suspended with signs stacked on each other's sides, say, 3 blocks above the surface of the lava, I believe that should remove all fall damage, and the villagers from the top can enjoy a slow, *painful* death by lava alone, instead of that unfortunate quick death by breaking all their bones. Also perhaps deepen the lava pool.
