That dragster has a lot more than a 1,000 HP. The 10,000 HP ones run a quarter in 4 seconds. With full steam that one could have run in the low 7s. I'm guessing closer to 2,000 HP, if not, a little more!

Every car gets assigned a number at the dragstrip that matches up with the Tech Card that we all must fill out and sign. For most of us, that number is written on the back driver side window. The Dragster doesn’t have a window like that. So they use that digital display for their car number.

Neck collar mandatory in all cars running 9.99 or quicker or exceeding 135 mph. - Valid NHRA competition license mandatory for cars running 9.99 (*6.39) or quicker. @TeslaPlaidChannel
@TeslaPlaidChannel 10 ай бұрын
Gearing. If it hits redline in top gear just past the 1/8th mile marker, it will blow its engine if it keeps going to 1320 feet. Most rail dragsters are geared for somewhere between 660 and 1000 feet only, as that gives them maximum quickness (trade off for top speed that they don’t need for the class the are racing in, whether 1/8th mile or 1000 feet)

That rail looked really well sorted out, very nice looking and running, normally asperated. I wonder when a pure drag class for electrics will be introduced. A high voltage motor, small light battery, good for 1/4 mile between charging, a 50-100 volt motors, 700 volts charging, shaving 3500lb from a Plaid, and a generator support truck to charge between rounds, or battery swap between races.

👍 Big Daddy Don Garlits has been racing an EV rail much like what you describe, since about 2014. It doesn't get much attention, likely because the entrenched "constituents" see it as some form of heresy? But who can claim to be more of a drag racing icon than Don? The Drag Racing Museum (just north of us) bears his name alone on the marquis! Yet I very much agree with you that a dedicated class (which the NHRA has been talking about for ~2 years now) could help. That way, the ICE cars can't cry "unfair!", which we see here in these Comments quite frequently, along with "instant torque is unfair" and "one-speed transmission is unfair". But the Powerglide in this Dragster has only 2 speeds for a single shift in the entire run! (Most cars we race running 9s and better use a Powerglide 2-speed)
@johnny427
@johnny427 Жыл бұрын
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I wouldn't think one speed transmission is unfair (the porsche turbo EV actually has 2 speed transmission) but comparing a four wheel drive 1000 hp car to a two wheel drive car which has half of the horses usually a bad sport. Anyways running against a dedicated and well built race car - even for a plaid - similarly unfair too. The problem with drag racing an EV I guess is what they do the best consistency and easy to drive them, so it they race against each others it is not so exciting as watching a car where every wrong move can lead to a disaster (or just to a lost race). I know tesla is fast but honestly after the first 60 feet you have time to make some photoes or drink coke, because you don't have much to do. It is great for safety but not so exciting watching a race. Recently I raced my Cobra in "Lachaza airport" where were 2 or 3 plaid (maybe one of them was only a raven) and all of them raced a lot, but after the first few passes basically noone watched them, but the visitors yelling and jumping up when an old ICE car made a nice run. I think they need a separate classES because between two different EV-s you always will know which one is winning, and it is just boring. I watch your channel from the beginning and wish you the best though I think it is great show when you run your car against oldschool cars, and it is the best when they can win, a great achievment for such an old machines. (against a rail dragster... it is not a fair competition, watching this just like watching the plaid as when it runs against an average street car)

Good question! The only somewhat ‘street legal’ car that I can recall beating our Plaid (Brandon’s C7 Z06) was actually riding on Drag Radials that are not street safe (especially in Florida). Certainly not on a foot braked car. For guys that have a trans brake and delay box, it’s still not common, as they have to release the button at precisely the right moment. Certainly 0.01 and even 0.00x are seen on any given night, but the fact that some tracks will PAY you $50 when you hit 0.000 (when admission to run all night only costs $30), tells you how rare it is. It would need different rear-end gearing to make a 1320 foot pass. It is currently set up to be quick, and hits redline in top gear around 700-750 feet. A taller gear would slow it down just a bit, but my calculations suggest it would run a low-to-mid 7-second 1/4 mile. (For reference, the next fastest car we’ve ever raced did 5.1 in the 1/8th and 8.0 in the 1/4, so the dragster’s 4.8 is only 0.3 faster than that one to half track)

Electric vehicles don't need to lug around 300 miles of range on a drag strip; they can do fine with much less (10 miles?) and still obtain the same power output if designed that way. I feel that the next generation of dragsters will be electric, with small range.

👍 Fully agree! After a full night of racing, we always get home with over 50% charge remaining. And we live 80 miles away! Half the battery (at half the weight) would be a very welcome option, or maybe via the Aftermarket in the future. 😃

@@TeslaPlaidChannel I’ve seen them all Andrew however this one represents a better example of a top dragster while the others are from lower classes of dragsters. At any rate, the Plaid is still an anomaly by the mere fact it can compete in some cases with the lower classes of dragsters.

@TeslaPlaidChannel
@TeslaPlaidChannel 10 ай бұрын
This 1000HP dragster is MUCH faster than the 1020HP Tesla Plaid because of its superior HORSEPOWER? No. (It has less HP.) This dragster is faster because of its light weight. Does a Prius have 3 cylinders? No? Oh, it has FOUR. The Dragster driver explains his 555 Cubic Inch V8 engine. 1000HP is right on par for that displacement. As anyone who has ever been to a dragstrip knows, dragsters come in all sizes down to 50CC juniors. (Those would still outrun that Prius) We’ve raced many different dragsters, winning some and losing others: kzbin.info/aero/PLhSrlyVZnBMo4eaWBVHOWvajcLSVcTjjT

As long as a vehicle that Teslas go against does not have to shift a transmission.. they stand a chance as the dragster did with a centrifugal clutch. Going against a Chevy Corvette with a geared transmission.. A Tesla would win with ease.😮

SORRY FANBOY when did we start talking about efficiency? What's big daddy's electric dragster record again, low 7? there are street fuel cars that do drag and drives in the high 5's. And we're not even talking about pure drag cars yet. There is no comparison between fuel and electric in pure speed and to claim that Don Garlits statement that electric is faster than fuel (which he probably never said because its false) overcomes the reality that a drag fuel car is literally seconds faster over 1/4 mile than the fastest electric dragster ever is just false and exposes your true fan boy status. @@TeslaPlaidChannel
