4-16-2014 :OK - thanks for all the comments and views.....here are some answers for the frequent questions.... The panels are Helios usa made 255 watt model x 4 cost about 2,000 w shipping. The Aims inverter is recommended for 700+ $ its still working and I MOVED IT INTO THE CABIN away from the batteries.....yes the battery box is well vented at the back. It almost never freezes around here......even water ....let alone battery acid.....some places in the country will get that cold .... but not here. The total cost with lumber batteries and a cheap charge regulator was 3,800. It was build AFTER I found out how much the cabin needed. There is no need to overbuild when money is an issue. It works great and only ran out of power once. Thanks again for all the views.

Nice setup. You should put a loop in the wires for your panels before they go into the insulation and down the PVC. Moisture and rain will gather at the bottom of the loop and then drop to the ground instead of following the wire down the insulation and into the PVC.

Nice system! I'd like to build a system similar to this. However, I live way down here is Mississippi. Here in the summer we swelter under intense heat most way through. So, can the batteries and that inverter handle the heat outdoors like you have, or would it be better to put mine just inside my home? We're talking in the 90 most of the summer!!

You may want to change those deep cycle batteries, they are not made for constant draw/charge. You would prob get better results from some golf cart batteries, or solar batts.

And they plan to make Class-8 semi-tractors & buses as well? Makes me look forward to the first luxury EV motor-home, built with fixed roof-top & retractable solar panels, all powering the EM-induction cook-top, water-heater & washer/clothes-dryer. 1000 watts is to charge the batteries, you can run a 3000 watt inverter from the batteries which is enough to boil kettles, run a stove or washing machine, lights, tv's etc. Not all at once though. The home will run from the battery bank, the panels are just to charge the batteries and 1000 watts will charge them pretty quick or stop them from discharging.

I have a 2000 watt system and the best I get is 13KWH per day. Most of the time is is 6-10KWH. Not enough to run a house, but mine is grid tied and I just want to reduce my electric bill and keep me from going over the 600KWH threshold each month .The rate goes up then.

IM NOT SURE WHAT IS THE 1000W PART OF THE SYSTEM. MIGHT HAVE A 1000W INVERTER , BUT I DOUBT THE PANELS ADD UP TO 1000W! AND EVEN IF THEY DO HAVE SPECS STATING 250W EACH PANEL WITH THAT CHEAP CHARGE CONTROLLER THERE IS NO WAY YOU ARE HARVESTING 1000W! YOU ALSO NEED TO DE-RATE PANELS BY 20% THEY USE FUZZY MATH WHEN RATING PANELS. IT DOES LOOK LIKE A NICE LITTLE SET UP. LOOKS LIKE YOU USED DOUBLE THE WIRE SIZE AS YOU NEEDED TO. LESS LOSS. keep on building! 73

Do you think you are getting better performance at 24 volts compared to 12v stuff? It seems they charge a lot more for the 24v power inverters and they tend to top out at 3500 watts. I currently use one of the AIMS 12v setups on a friends home system to even do welding, but we are thinking of doing other buildings at the location in 24v since I got a couple 24v panels in a barter deal.

I like the view from the bottom showing that there was no backing on the solar panels. This means that heat buildup is minimal and power output is maximized. I wonder, carpentery wise, what it would take to be able to select three different angles for the panels; that is, one for winter, one for summer and one for fall & spring.
@blairbushproject
@blairbushproject 6 жыл бұрын
we tracked the sky at our location and had our panels temporarily placed. the next year we built a frame, and mounted it on a pole so that you can flip the panels, for maximum sun. as we are in northern Arizona, we have great full sun morning, noon and sunset. So we can set the panels three different tilts by using the pivot on the poles.

That's pretty much the same system I have in mind. All I really care about is a good freezer to keep food if SHTF or the grid goes down. Nothing else really matters if you ask me. If you can't keep food cold you're dead in the water. I have about 1000 watt panels...should really double that and I probably will this summer. We have reliable power but you never know. I personally think saving money from solar is not an option.....it would take a hundred years to cover the cost of equipment and keeping it running. I have mine for emergency only

@WizzRacing
@WizzRacing 10 жыл бұрын
Depending on the system you can run any small AC unit, regular size ice box, and plenty of LED lights. A computer, LED TV and radio system. Anything like stove should be cast iron unless you have generator or propane and access to fuel to run them. You just have to be wise in how you use them and not all at once. 2000 watts is around 16 amp 120 volt AC single phase. You can read the labels on the back of appliances to see the wattage, voltage and amperage. Everything should be calculated in watts by the voltage or amperage. The most efficient is when you don't have to convert to either AC or DC as you lose amperage in the heat transfer.

+Mike Hauss never use 12volt deep cycle batteries like used in boats. marine batteries are not true deep cycle. use golf cart batteries or forklift batteries. golf cart or forklift batteries can be run down and no harm done to the battery, they are made to be run down because of the application they are made for. also higher voltages are better for power inverters so most run batteries in series hookup. or parallel series hookup. you can pay less money for a 24 to 48 volt pure sine wave inverters. i would never use a modified sine wave inverter to run motors or compressors like in AC or a well pump. pure sine wave are best in all types of wiring.

Do you have the batteries in 'use series' and 'Parallel?' Should be 24v if done right, otherwise your batteries wont balance properly and fail sooner. This allows you to use 1 battery to 1 panel. The big money should be spent on Amperage Hours so the system can run 24/7 on a trickle charge, although a wind turbine would help at night but its just easier to series and parallel with 4x 35ah or better. And it takes a cheap 12v and doubles the amps. You cant even run a microwave at 12v.

Would 1,000 watts be enough for a bus running a fridge and stove and led lighting? And how much would something like this cost

Damn Danno! as soon as you said stove you have hit a snag! Solar power and batteries are not really the every day solution for driving heating appliances.

Hello , how many ampere? Can you connet an electric kitchen to this 4 solar pannel?
@lukeb8045
@lukeb8045 9 жыл бұрын
rayner1guerra No not even close, you're looking at converting all the high electrical usage appliances to propane. Stove, dryer, water heater, electrical coffee maker, toaster you would either do without or on propane or wood burning. You would have to be in tune to your environment and judge power usage accordingly. You could run a washing machine for example on a sunny day etc. This is a pretty nice system done on the cheap, installation looks well done. My biggest criticism is his choice of batteries, deep cycle RV batteries are a poor choice for solar batteries. Batteries are actually the core of your system, your whole system is centered around them, your solar system is really about how well it can support your battery bank. Batteries can last a long time, but much depends on how much it drains, or how much it needs to be replenished by the system. If you drain your batteries to 50 % every night, even if they are replenished the next day they will not last a long time. If the drain is much smaller lets say 10 - 15% they can last a long time provided you buy the right kind of battery.

This is a 1kw Setup. About 60 amps, but it's unlikely he will ever see 60 amps coming in.

+Tom McBride Well if everyone used A/Cs for global cooling, wouldn't that actually cause global warming? OHHH but NOT if the source is SOLAR!! YAY for solar :)
