I remember the green Hastings Line Diesels but do not remember them being called Thumpers. I also remember when the Robertsbridge Tunnel was singled in order for normal width trains to be used on the line, and electrification in 1986. I remember also the Gala Weekend in the spring of 1986 which introduced the electrics a few weeks before they began full time service. That weekend reduced price tickets were on sale between Hastings and Tonbridge which cold be used for unlimited travel on that section of the route.

I remember the old thumpers, that takes me back years, used to catch them from Uckfield to London before they moved Uckfield station, you could hear their distinctive sounds miles off, thanks for the video that took me back

As a kid was never in to trains in fact bored the pants off me, but as I'm now in my late 40s I miss the old trains and have a different view on trains altogether.

Thanks for uploading such a well made video. It is nice that you included a commentary - so many KZbin contributors never say a word!

Those unshielded 3rd rails make me feel very uncomfortable... Why don't they have a fibreglass cover like in most other places?

LimaVictor rare to see side covers on UK third rail - and can’t have top cover - don’t know what you mean by most other places?

It's not uncommon to have wooden boarding each side of the conductor rails in some locations but the shoe contact is on the top of the rail so that must be uncovered.

Lovely video, did you know that some of the coaches of 1001 are from a Class 423

Thank you, I did know that, there is small caption right at the start of the video that says more or less that. Im not sure if it is a class 423 though (VEP)? But certainly the buffet car is from a 4BIG (Class 421) and there is a coach from a 4CEP Class 411, according to there website. I must admit though my knowledge on slam door stock isn't that great!

@@DadRail 1001 currently has two former EMU vehicles in the formation these are a former CEP Trailer 70262 and BIG Buffet 69337. With 2 wide body coaches sandwiched between 4 narrow body coaches the entire set looks like 2 Tadpole units from the Redhill/Tonbridge line BR Class 206 (!!!!) sremg.org.uk/dmu/class206.shtml

So why do you think these units lasted so long? They don't build them like this any more, shame.
