Yes, when it's at speed, no other diesel loco sounds as good. But when it departs from stations it's not as good as either the 125 (Valenta) or the class 68 with its multiple noises and deep bass. But yea, when it's at full speed it's the best.

I can still vividly remember seeing, for the first time, the prototype DP1 Deltic pulling in to the south end of Peterborough (north) station 65 years ago in the summer of 1958 on a London bound working. As an avid 11 year old train spotter I was well aware of the coming of the diesel age, and knew that steam's days were numbered. The Deltic prototype was so unique as a design, using those twin Napier two stroke marine diesel engines that made a sound like nothing else. Standing next to her on that platform as it opened up when pulling away made a sound and vibration that sent shivers through this eleven year old, I thought it was the best engine noise I'd ever heard, an opinion, it would seem, that still holds true today!

The horn, hiss of the brakes being released and the opening up of a napier never fails to send a shiver down my spine 😍 a textbook deltic departure by the driver too, I hope those multiple start ups aren't a sign of anything, very similar to its first trip from KX earlier this year when they lost a unit and were trying to restart it at Grantham and she wasn't having any of it

Great video, just a minor point, pity it is displaying 1A16, when it is leaving the Cross, going north, surely a northbound head code would have been better.. but I bet this brings back many memories of those lucky enough to remember a line up of Deltics at KX, in the 60s to their end in 1981..note the Mk4 set arriving alongside the platform to the right, around 5:45 into the video. There is nothing the "V" of a Deltic exhaust.

Why do they always run a Class 47 at the rear? Backup in case of failure of the Deltic, or is it pushing to reduce load on the Deltic ?
@trainsplanes7 ай бұрын
The inbound working to Kings Cross from LSL’s depots at either Crewe or Southall needs to switchback on itself so the rear loco is used for that - It also provides insurance also in case of any issues. 👍

Restoring the two Deltic engines installed in DP1 to running condition is not feasible. The engines (Type E158, D18-12) although similar, differ from those used in British Rail Class 55 locomotives (Type E169, D18-25B). Aside from the original issue with the severe oil leak in the phasing gear cover, significant engine components were removed for use as spare parts for the Royal Navy prior to DP1 being donated to the Science Museum as the locomotive was not owned by British Railways
