As an English-speaker it was most helpful to me to understand that "ser" and "estar" come from two different Latin verbs. Sum (esse) in Latin is used to describe characteristics. Sto (stare) can generally be translated into English as "to stand." Our English words "state" and "status" both come from the past participle of stare. In fact, status IS the past participle. Think of examples like, "Where do we stand?" or "Where does the game stand?" or "We stand ready to help" or "I stand relieved." State, aside from referring to a geographical sub-entitiy of the United States, is a common word for "condition"; e.g. "he was in a bad state." Status can be refer to all sorts of conditions. In the military it can refer to being active duty or reserve or on leave or discharged. As a student it can referr to being currently enrolled or on sabbatical or already graduated. It can be used in a health context. In any case, your state of being or your status tells where things stand with you: what condition you are in Stand is also used in English for where a building or even a city is located geographically. The Empire State Building stands on the southwest corner of 34th St and 5th Ave. in Manhattan. San Diego stands in the southwest corner of the continental United States. Something might stand on a table or mantelpiece. In short, if you can use some form of "stand," including standing, state and status in English, the Spanish verb is almost certainly going to be "estar." On the other hand, if you are describing intrinsic characteristics of a person or thing, the verb will be ser. This includes being a child or adult and one's occupation, even though one isn't forever a child, wasn't always an adult, and wasn't always in a profession and will retire one day. Being a child or adult or a professor or librarian or bricklayer is part of what existence or one's identity. Children grow up to become adults, but neither adults nor children can become the other like one can get sick, or tired, or happy. You can't voluntarily go back a f forth between being a kid and an adult. When you are a kid, that is the reality of your existence - it is part of who and what you are. Ideally, at least, being a teacher or factory worker is part of who you are as a person, not just something you happen to do. It is a defining characteristic of you as a person. Now, here's where it might become ambiguous: what if you have a congenital condition? I am hypothyrotic. My thyroid has never worked right. To me, being hypothyrodic is just as much a part of my experience of existence as having brown eyes or being allergic to penicillin.. But it is still a state, a medical condition. If I were in a Spanish-speaking country and had to go to the doctor to get new thyroid medication, I'd describe myself as being hypothyrodic using the verb "ser," but that would reflect my personal experience, and might not be what the doctor would say about me, speaking of my medical condition. Similarly, one would say that a person "está loco" - it's a state, not an intrinsic characteristic. But what if an author wanted to emphasis that for a particular character, being crazy is an inherent characteristic? Might the author then use "ser" instead of "estar" BECAUSE that would go against the normal usage and draw extra attention to the nature of that character's craziness?

Very interesting 🧐 I am so glad I didn’t learn Spanish with rules and structure. If I had to learn like this I may have never learned, it hurts my brain. Lol I learned (and I’m still learning) kind of like a baby. I was thrown in the city of Madrid when I was 15 (from USA) I knew nothing in Spanish and was forced to learn. My high school I went to in Madrid I literally just sat in class and listened and observed. That was my only job. I took no test and never had homework 📚 I feel like being dropped in a country not understanding a word is the best way to learn but I know everyone has different situations. I was there for 2 years and learned a great foundation of Spanish. Now that I’m older I want to finish where I left off and continue my learning . Juan is by far the best teacher ever, he’s funny, clear, expressive, and thorough. I usually don’t listen to lessons like this, I like his lessons where he is talking and telling stories, these lessons best benefit me in my situation to progress with my Spanish learning needs. Good luck to everyone and thank you Juan for being here for us all and thank you for your hard work and dedication. By the way...I’m a teacher too, I teach English to Chinese children. 🙂

Este video fue un muy excelente explicación entre 'ser y estar'. Más de eso ya sabría pero cosas como famosa y inocente quizas no. Ahora solo me faltan los estados de matrominal auque se pueden cambiar, son más permanente, como casado, soltero, divorciado, y viuda. Yo sé en España se usa 'está' pero no es lo mismo en América Latina. Ellos usan 'ser' por casado y ceo que por viuda, pero estár por soltero, ¿no es verdad?

Sí, es verdad. A veces cambia el uso del idioma de un país a otro. Creo que está admitido decir soy soltero, casado, etc. pero en España decimos estar casado, soltero...

La diferencia entre ser y estar tiene que ver con los verbos latinos esse y stare. Por lo general, el verbo esse en latin se emplea para describir la naturaleza de algo. Deus est eternus et omnipotens. Pero stare describe una situación o un estado - "status." En inglés decimos "where do things stand?" Esta pregunta significa,"¿Cuál es la situación?

¿Se puede decir que adjetivos que se emplean siempre con ser que significan características que no son permanentes en verdad, que tales características a llegar a ser permanentes? Por lo menos llegamos a torrarlas por permanentes. Aunque unos celebres no son tan renombrados entre la generación siguiente, se puede hallar sus nombres y biografías en Wikipedia (u otra enciclopedia biográfica). Así que no dejan de ser famosos. ¿Qué os parece?
