I worked with a friend with a C&C machine. I built a set of alloy wheels that are bead locks. Air filled they have had no issues at 160+ mph. We doubled the center tread and installed small rings inside the tire. After much trial and error, we have figured out a weave that stops any growth of an air filled tire. Anyone in top speed RC knows how hard that is. We've spun the tires on large bench motors to over 300mph, no over expansion, depending or failures. Tires are whats holding back records, not power. Were testing small go cart racing tires as well, very promising.

The argon gas can be very easily blown away in very slight indoor drafts even if you can’t feel it. And even if the argon doesn’t completely blow away the ‘dome’ of argon around the weld can be disrupted allowing air to get in causing the porosity. It seems pretty likely that was your cause for shitty welds considering your welds started coming out better later on out of nowhere

Hi Kevin, I'm a Welder, there could be a number of reasons for the porosity, I'd be checking the o-rings in your torch, especially around the tungsten collet, and also the tail piece, it might even be a crack in the tail piece, another thing to check would be any pin holes in your gas lines. Both from the bottle to the machine, and from the machine to the torch, other than that you could change to another bottle of gas, but rarely is gas ever contaminated. Good luck with your endeavours. @kevintalbotTV good points above but If your welder works fine for stainless steel but poorly on mild steels it may be your filler metal. Mild steels GTAW benefits from using a filler rod with added silicon and manganese to avoid porosity. It also performs poorly when welded without filler (autogenous) compared to stainless steel for this reason. Try “ER70S” filler rods and see it that helps.

These cars only need simple steel belted rubber tires. It's just a B to make them. Someone would have to set up the cords then impregnate molten rubber around them in a vacuum. I've done the math on the tire size question. The centrifugal force that's going to blow the foam out is inversely related to the tire radius, at a given speed. F = speed/radius. So bigger radius tire is undoubtedly better. This is why F1 cars running at 200 don't instantly blow out the tires, despite them being made of rubber. TLDR: Big tires = Faster speed before blowout.

Im sure you know this already, but you need the center driveshaft. The power and load bias between the two front tires and the two rear tires are killing your foams. If the fronts are spinning slower, they are scrubbing the foams off from the push of the rear. And the rears are wearing exceptionally fast because they are trying to push the slower scrub of the fronts. They need to be synced through the driveline. Great video kev, keep up the hard work and dedication brother! Maybe see if you can get a set of balanced steel belted tires on some trick carbon wheels 😎 or take some fiber core gates coolant hose for semi trucks and glue them to some wheels?

i was thinking the same, a very interesting piece of kit could be to sync them electronically so that the ESCs are linked to a central controller that monitors the wheel RPM individually and adjusts to suit. The poor welding is due to the pipe being closed on both sides. The air in the tube expands due to the heat. And wants to escape. The air escapes through the weld pool of your weld. The solution is to drill a small hole +/- 3 millimeters in your tube. The welds on your exhaust are perfect because the tubes are open.

you can glue foam to alu perfectly fine with the right glue and roughing up the alu. And it might keep the foam from flying off a bit better because it's gonna flap about a lot less and force that is smoothly introduced is always better than dynamically changing loads. It'd also probably be cheaper because you can reuse the alu wheels and just need to glue new foam to them. Only downside is they're heavier and thus need more run up to get up to speed. But some of the better quality ones with a lower durometer, around 76a or lower have plenty of grip. I’m certainly not saying with any certainty that it’s the perfect answer. I know the softer the rubber, the faster they wear out and two part wheels with a solid core and softer poly tread at those speeds it’s an unknown how well they will hold together. But it’s got to be worth experimenting with.

Before welding, flood the tube with Argon . When sealing a tube, the air inside expands and tries to come out through the weld. Try drilling a small hole in the tube to let the air escape as it heats up. If you can't find any leaks, try a different bottle and new tungsten. A brand new bottle of contaminated gas is possible, it will drive you mad.

great job as always, kev. i do think that aluminium wheels with foam would be a great idea because thats what they used on the scc world record car

Great video Kev! I can’t wait to see what you sort out with the wheels. I think I’d give up on foam and make my own, can’t imagine any worse result coming from that.

The fact that the average car can go 140-160 and this can go that fast, amazing, keep up the good work.

I think a solid wheel would be the way to go, maybe a soft compound skateboard or rollerblade wheel with a hex pressed into one of the bearing sides, if it would grip enough though would be another thing 😀
@rustler08 Жыл бұрын
They don't grip worth a damn unless you have sufficient weight, and that's not going to be enough
@BrokenOpus Жыл бұрын
Is it against the rules to have larger diameter wheels?
@bloodyknuckles9181 Жыл бұрын
@@BrokenOpus I doubt it as its rc not f1, the problem is not with the size of the wheels they have its the compound as centrifugal force at that speed is throwing the tread off hence why the outside if the wheel seems to come off worse its not the road cutting into it
@BrokenOpus Жыл бұрын
@@bloodyknuckles9181 why I ask is would not a larger wheel rim lessen that force, as the wheel can rotate a bit slower on the tire edge to reach the same speeds.
@bloodyknuckles9181 Жыл бұрын
@@BrokenOpus yes that is true however the larger the wheel the more foam it uses which would counteract any benefits, other than a solid wheel it would have to be a steel reinforced rubber tyre like a car, cars have the same issue after 130mph which is why car tyres have speed ratings on them
@ThePaoligno90 Жыл бұрын
Just an idea: would it be viable to use supercapacitors instead of those batteries? They hold less energy, but you can recharge them much faster, they wear very little, and they can output a crazy amount of current, useful for short bursts of power like a single speed run.

Hello Kevin, I appreciate your videos. With your welding issues, I assume that you are using argon gas as a shield, as for the filler wire, use Stainless Steel filler wire on steel thinner than 3mm/1/8 of an inch. That was an awesome video, those cars are super quick, you all do well to keep them running straight. Thanks for your input into the RC hobby.

With these tires. It may be worth scoring lines into the plastic tires, then when the foam comes off it still gets some grip. It also ma be worth installing some sort of tracking system so it finds a line and sticks to it. Excellent video as normal . Keep up the good work

For the foam ripping off at high speed you could make the wheels taller as this would increase the foam’s distance from the center of the wheels thus decreasing centripetal force. This would allow you to keep foam for grip and achieve a higher speed before the foam rips off.

Kev, have a look at an ice hockey Puck. Very solid rubber material. Get one in the lathe and turn yourself a set of wheels. Nothing to de laminate, very solid may hold up at speed and not destort if you stay on the narrow idea, maybe possible to bolt some ally disks through the turned Puck to stifen it up. Just an idea mate. Love some feed back if you give it a look. All the best with smashing and holding the record in the future. 👍
@WildhurstLodge7 ай бұрын
You need hockey pucks for wheels! Just drill a hole in it. They won’t come apart, good weight, no glue, and they have some grip texture on the outer edge to grip the stick. I think they will make perfect speed tires.

Try 100percent argon if your not already. By the looks of it your tungsten is contaminated and not ground to a nice point. I would also get a gas lense kit for your torch size. If you weld any metal that is coated or dirty it will cause issues and more than likely contaminate your tungsten. Which will need to be cleaned up to work properly again. Make sure you have the right grade of tungsten as well. Stick out length of the tungsten is also important, if it's out too far the gas will not protect it. You get way better coverage with a gas lense kit and can therefore use more sitckout. Double check all you settings including post-flow to make sure they are right and if you are not using post flow you are contaminating the tungsten. Post flow needs to last until the red hot tungsten is cooled.

Kev, due to galvanized iron coating on the metal pipe, we can't weld it properly. U have to grind or rub with sand paper on the place which u r going weld. So that the tungsten rod will not melt and no porosity will come, love ur work man❤❤❤❤

Rivets create drag if you want the tires to hold up, you take carbon fiber, thread, and when forming the tire, you put it in the rubber like a steel radial tire. It will not blow apart this way.

Kevin, what gas composition are you running? Mig and tig gas are not the same. The most common MIG gas is 75/25 75% argon 25% co2. Tig will weld horribly with that gas composition because the only gas you can run with TIG is pure argon. Also with Tig cleanliness is key. You should be cutting the part then following with a hand sand around and on the weld to remove any coatings followed by a wipe down with acetone to remove any oils. Another thing you want a nicely ground tungsten tip. The sharper the angle of the grind the more pin point the arc but the faster the tungsten balls up under load. You should also be welding in reverse polarity. Any questions hmu.

Top fuel dragsters run over 300+ mph. When they broke the 350 mph they were running harder compound rubber tires. What if the foam on the wheels were harder. Maybe try a sold hard rubber wheel and tire combo. Aluminum wheels will need a hard rubber compound for the tire
