I'm just a guy in Kansas playing around in his garage. Come along in my adventures riding, racing, modifying and repairing my small fleet of unusual misfits.

The first time I pulled the engine on one of my old mopeds my neighbor was hanging out in my garage drinking while I worked. We’re both classic car guys too and that engine looked so tiny to both of us. As soon as it came free he asked “can I hold it?” like it was a newborn baby. Haha

Nice job on a first time e50 overhaul! 1. Time 18-22 degrees BTDC 2. Get a 3 shoe clutch and use blue springs, 1 turn out from flush. 3. Use the carb parts listen for your carb number as listed on the Bing tuning manuals (google). And check for air leaks! 4. Use 16-42 gearing 5. Go for a electronic ignition without points 6. Use a 7 heat range plug 7. Have fun

Currently I am at 16 degrees (playing it safe with the stuffed crank), blue springs two turns out on a 2 shoe, treatland chinese Bing 15 with genuine guts (slide, needle, jet holder, etc), i dont remember my gearing but its one tooth up from stock in the front. And i believe i have the cooler spark plug already.

Nice movie, but more is possible. I am now 74 years old. When I was 16 and had a part-time job at a go-kart circuit, my means of transport was a Kreidler Florett 49cc. I had gained experience with karting and also made my 49cc Kreidler faster. Different cylinder with larger ports, different piston, upper piston ring had an L-shape, the piston was also shorter and very light, larger intake pipe for the also larger Bing carburetor, from 12 mm to 21 mm!, that is a lot..The I changed the flow of the muffler slightly. I already had a thick silencer, you could omit the rear inner part. I shortened the front part of the exhaust pipe. It went like clockwork. I drove next to a friend's car and reached 90 km per hour. Electronic ignition did not exist at that time.

Now that's really a moped. I was really hoping you weren't calling a scooter a moped like so many idiots do.

That really annoys me too. It also makes it harder to find moped parts online. MOtor-PEDal. How hard can it be to know the difference?

That cloud of smoke COULD be the transmission fluid making its way through the seal. Watch the levels and if they drop over time I would open it back up and ensure you put the transmission side crank seal on correctly. The garter spring should be facing the clutch and bell and not the crank :) Of course I just saw this video and you may have already sorted this. Just wanted to offer a possible solution

Nice to see you getting this old bike going, and thank you so much for not playing music through the parts you ffrwd through, because i hate that, because it distracts from watching what you are doing. Over on jr's channel he did that pulling the motor on the escalade, so i skipped over that because it's distracting, and i didn't feel like adjusting the volume for it every time. I hope you have it sorted now, i can relate to having to tear stuff apart more than once, it sucks, which is why i try to make sure i have all the specs when working on something i'm not familiar with. G-d bless.

Hey Jake, I am rebuilding my E50 right now with the help of your videos. I got the wrong tools because I make mistakes. Yeah well, I hope to get this engine rebuilt before spring. What diagram where you looking at? How is your PED running after rebuild? Hope to keep mine for a solid 5 years with no problems. Think it could last that long with all upgraded parts? Just got a major wheel bearing and sealed axle service done to this machine and I am converting the bike over to a pietcard CDI system for better start up and running. Thanks- W

That is about the simplest engine/transmission you can get, the only thing simpler is belt drive from crank with no internal gearing or clutch Pretty inspired to use big adjustable as a holder, factory piece is probably just an alloy plate with a slot in it to do the same thing. Suzuki, Yamaha, Vespa, MZ all use something very similar, Honda use steel bars with pins or alloy plate depending on year and dealer set up. (I've done a lot of motorcycle, scooter and moped engine builds over 55 years) You didn't put stainless screws in dry? I've used plumbers Teflon paste (Lowes or Home Depot) prevents them seizing in the alloy and works better than any anti-seize as it's almost totally inert Heavy springs are a bad idea when you can't get rpm high enough for clutch to engage properly, fitting larger front sprocket raises gearing probably making things worse until it's fully broken in Extra oil makes it run lean, also creates more heat with less power, (and a pretty good smoke screen ) With fully synthetic pre mixed two stroke oil you probably want to run 40:1 instead of 20:1 (or is that one 25:1?) and re-jet as it runs rich with less oil if your running E10 you may need to adjust float level in carb, since around 2013 I've done a lot of carb mods because E10 is available 'everywhere' and non-ethanol only available a few places (and it's about $ 0.70 more expensive per gallon, not a problem when your only getting a gallon a month but it adds up on a 20 gallon tank) I thought the head was designed so water couldn't collect around spark plug? Yours seems to be fitted 90 degrees rotated? (although I haven't actually worked on one since around 1978 😁)
