There is virtually zero knowledge or understanding of the Chinese Communist Party in the West. It is seen as a clone of the Soviet Communist Party. In reality it is entirely different. It has been extraordinarily successful, not just transforming China but is also in the process of changing the world. Everyone needs to know about CPC and understand the reasons that lie behind its extraordinary success.

China has the most superior model of governance because people do not have to vote idiots who then become leaders/ministers. CPC would picked the most educated, highly skilled professionals to lead. Forget abt democracy. Instead, the CPC must focus on eradication of poverty, narrow the wealth gap between the rich and poor, create a huge middle class, and look after your people who are handicapped or mentally ill.

He could have specified that maos incorporation of the peasanty into the revolution was a concrete part of his ideology call the mass line. The masses at the time were peasants so Mao sought to promote the will of the masses. Till this day the communist party of china (cpc) in part makes decisions in line with maos theory of the mass line. Hundreds of thousands of cpc members and officials traveled all over China. In the cities but heavily in the country and they just go around and talk to locals and ask them about their lives and what their needs are. This gets reported back and compiled with the central government it comes up with general plans and goals which can be adjusted on a provincial level to better apply to particular areas.

Western misconceptions about the CPC stem from arrogance and ignorance; hubristic rhetoric and misguided policies toward China are largely driven by political duplicity. So Martin Jacques has made it quite clear, and for that he deserves full credit. But was the truth so hard to know? The CPC continually reforms itself and China is on a course of steadfast revitalization; reform and revitalization don't come easy: when politicians and citizenry ask more of themselves the country does better. Conversely, when all try to shirk responsibility and shift blame everyone loses. This is true everywhere, for China and the West.

When the Brits and Americans get round to wiping out 50 million plus of their citizens over 70 years through famine, ‘enslavement, and a cult of personality; when they still revere mass murderers on bank notes, while embalming their body on the footsteps of their government, the West will be able to compete with the CCP’s unabashed civility. Carries emotions and psychology the West will be fine with China as long as Chinese do exactly as they are told like the Africans. Who worship Western God images or the Hong Kong people who also worship Western God images if they want to be Western. It is not my problem I am a peasant watching the very serious play of who will dominate the planet for the next three generations at least. The West is determined to scare the hell out of the global south, by slowly killing China with a thousand cuts. The “remarkable transformation” of the modern China didn’t start in 1949, in fact due to the “red scare” China were very much isolated by the world except the Soviet Russia (and all the Gold were taken away) and the outcome wasn’t pretty (eg. the Great Leap Forward to pay the debt). It wasn’t until the Ping-pong diplomacy, and Nixon visited in 1972. The markets were opened up for China.

I am rather late in life getting to learn more of the history of the CPC. Indeed I would agree with Dr. Jacques concerning the ability of the CPC to adapt and improve with the times. It has consistently demonstrated a capacity to produce men and women with "thought" (ideas) and ability to think outside the box pragmatically and without emotion, right from its early days. Take for example how during the civil war they were prepared to test the ideas of their Soviet allies and patrons but were quick to discard or modify them when they found them unfit for purpose. Credit to the USSR for not imposing its own model.

The Chinese political system is similar to an American Fortune 500 corporation where the CEO and the board of directors are on the same page. Only the smartest people move up the corporate ladder and this also applies to the Chinese political system. Being efficient is how a Fortune 500 company makes money and this also applies to China. Can you imagine a Fortune 500 company having two board of directors in their decision making process? That is a path to bankruptcy and that is the path of western democracies. Historians in the future will point out that an efficient government will rise while an inefficient government will decline.

True. The ending shows MJ's unmistakeable vote of confidence in the CCP - that China will be "the most influential and most advanced society in the world for the 6th time... and that would be achieved under the leadership of the CCP." I am not even sure of that!

It is very fascinating to hear your presentation about CPC, China and the Chinese. Unfortunately America has this person named Rush Doshi who portrays himself to be expert in China and Chinese behavior and has significant influences in Biden’s China policy, wrote this book called “The Long Game”. The claims he made about China and Chinese in this book are really absurd. His knowing of Mandarin language doesn’t mean he knows China and Chinese, kind of like a person knows to enjoy eating Peking Duck doesn’t equate him to a Chinese food critic expert! It is quite worrisome to have a person like him in Biden’s advisory team.

Martin should also elaborate on the inefficiency of the multi-party system of Taiwan. The Chinese of Taiwan are descendants or transplants of the Mainland Chinese, and thus, their civilization, culture, and belief should be nearly identical to that of the Mainland Chinese. It is due to this similarity that Taiwan serves as an excellent laboratory for testing the advantage and disadvantage between a one-party system versus a multi-party system.

I saw this old quote. Mao became a leader for the Chinese peasants by sheer grit, at a time when they took on both the brutal Japanese occupiers and the self-serving business elite (the Nationalists). Americans are appalling ignorant about China during the difficult years (1930's-40's). The US foreign service in China at the time (a highly competent, knowledgeable and professional group of civil servants) recommended that the US support Mao but the US government turned them down, kicked them out of China and replaced them with an inept but politically responsive legation that supported the Nationalists. This led to a freeze on Sino-US relations for the next 20+ years! -Chris wallace

China have gone through a industrialisation and have increased their living standards many times. Now they have to work harder to not lose what they have achieved. It will be interesting to see how they try solve all the problems. China have all the technologies needed but it's up to CCP present the solution's.

WJ makes the point that as China modernise, it is unlikely it will westernise, and it will be arrogant and hubristic to think it will go the way of the West, which I agree. The reason? MJ: "China is rooted in the history of Chinese civilisation. China is a civilisation state primarily, and secondarily a nation state. It is rooted in Confucian values, very different relationship between the state and society." China will never be like America or Europe. The past 4,000 years starting with Xia dynasty China had been run by centralised control - governed by an imperial court ruled by an emperor then - with each dynasty expanded in territory. Now? It is the CCP that has Premier Xi as the leader. No difference between the imperial court and CCP really. This centralised control has been lindy so far, surviving upheavals of historical events and the test of time ~4,000 years, and by the lindy effect this centralised power could possibly continue. On the other hand, the nation state was only created in the 1600s, and "modern democracy" (instead of being ruled by monarchy) is even younger than nation states. How China is going to tango with the rest of the world will be fascinating to watch.

The Chinese government has been kept its head clear these years. Even though the US government has set off anti-China storm for a long period, but Chinese government does not follow suit. Chinese live and love the US as usual(if they loved the US before).

from my economic perspective. The US used China to primarily combat with its inflation as a policy on the run. Since it has never had long term policy. The economic run was terrible in 3 decades since Vietnam war. 15/8/1971 Richard Nixon violated the Brenton Wood Accord & closed down the Gold Window ever since. This cause a long economic period of Stagflation (Stagnation + Inflation) with the Fed interest rate was double digit that hit the highest rate at 20% in 1981 under Paul Volker chairmanship. The US had tried & made all errors since the Nixon regime until the early rise of China that provided the US cheap consuming goods which effectively restrained the inflation under 3% hence allowed the interest rate falling down ie, stimulated the economic activities especially in Banking & Financial sector. Therefore, the US economic model since the 1970 has been nothing else but printing more USD & import cheap products from Asia. As soon as the US reduce the import it would go back to the Stagflation as in the 1980s. No way the US is able to wean off inexpensive products made in China. This evidence in 2018-2020 despite Trump imposed heavy tariff on China but the US trade deficit got worse. Free advice to the US: To solve this economic problem the US should look at the military industrial complex, live within its means ie, keep its armed force at home. The US threat to the rest of the world is overwhelmingly larger than the rest of the world to the US. Don't make China a boogeyman to scare the Capitol into spend offensively more on war machines.

American style democracy or self government is not for everyone. One of the American founding father said that our way of self government is only for those who are guided by morality (paraphrase). It makes sense that freedom cannot be unfettered, or chaos will ensue. Comparing GDP is deceiving because China’s population is 4 times that of the U.S. A better comparison is GDP per capita, in which case China doesn’t come close to the U.S.

Even better comparison is the growth of GDP per capita, where China exploded in last 30 years.
