Very helpful. I am starting to see how learning chip carving basics will massively improve my relief carving skills. Thank you

Good observation, John. Many carvers wanting to learn other styles will start with chip carving for this very reason! More tutorials at mychipcarving.com

I have a 1.75 inch roughing knife and tried some of these techniques but they were awkward. I'm thinking I need a smaller knife more specialized for this purpose?

It's a great video (well it would be great), but your purpose of teaching is being made redundant with the Membership details embedded over the entire screen. The details are already down below where the subscribe button is; embedding the details is not only unnecessary but blocks the viewer from your content.

Hello Suzi, I just posted this reply to Roger and see that it applies to your comments as well...Thank you for your comments. I posted this video three years ago and since then I've had second thoughts about the choices I made when creating these videos. Maybe I should remove these videos with text promotions and redo them. That would probably be the best move at this time. Thanks again, Marty

I really do appreciate that you want to advertise your service but putting the ad over what you are working on makes it impossible to see what you're doing. As a consumer, Your video doesn't make me want to sign up for your program because, accurate or no, this is what I will expect from you. I'm really not "bitching" at you, it is intended to be constructive criticism. Other than that, I love your work. You make it look so easy!

That pattern is so low in resolution that its useless. One thing about chip carving is if your pattern isn't crisp then your work will be crap - especially for a beginner. Its all about the pattern. BTW, since you've pretty much have chip carving tutorial market cornered on youtube, how about throwing people a bone. Something other than the low res pattern on your site or this video with the text superimposed over your technique.

The pattern I'm using in this video is printed extra dark so it is visible on camera. When carving for yourself I'd suggest using hairlines that can be carved away and easily removed if there are any lines leftover.

And remember too that this is just a practice pattern.

Looks like I missed your comment 2 years ago...Sorry Joe. Pattern res has greatly improved on my website patterns. You're right about this being so important. You'll find several free patterns on my website that I'd encourage you to download. Here to help, Marty
