Eru Iluvatar is basically God. Eru created the Ainur, basically angels, to help create Middle-Earth. The Ainur are divided into 2 groups, the Valar, powerful angels who became gods in their own right (not unlike the Greek pantheon) and the Maiar, basically lesser angels.

jwhaler82 isn’t it weird how he’s called Eru illuvitar? That’s like saying Zeus Jupiter or something It’s just the same thing but a different name And sticking with that the other way to describe them would be Greek gods(with eru as something like Uranus or Gaia) and the maiar as demi gods

What a fun video! I've become a big fan of yours, of late, and look forwards to enjoying more of these factual romps! Lord of the Rings Online has what I feel is the best explanation of "hit points" ever -- Morale. As a character suffers mental and physical damage, their Morale erodes, and if it is exhausted entirely, the character _runs away_ to a rally point. Even better is that Morale can be restored not only by potions, but also by having a good meal (increases regeneration) and by friendly songs and speeches from allied characters. The use of music and speech as boon and bane is also a fun element -- Minstrels are capable of blasting even-level enemies right into the grave with a single shout in lower levels, and can still heal themselves even as they sing, play, and bellow their way through battle and frustrate the enemy with their resilient nature. Rune-keepers use the power of speech and writing to thwart foes and assist allies, often with gorgeous elemental-style effects such as lightning, fire, and ice -- but it's all really words, harsh and kind. Hobbit Minstrels are highly amusing (and potent), but the Dwarven version issues many of his shouts in Khuzdul, for an additional level of awesomeness!

5. The whole people-wanting-the-ring thing is actually kind of complicated. You have to read the book to fully understand. 7. Sméagol is not a hobbit. He is an ancestor of the hobbits. 8. The Fellowship actually splits up, causing the story to follow both the Ring and the rest of the Fellowship seperately. 23. The ballot was not corrupted. It chose to join Morgoth's rebellion. Though I suppose you can argue that your phrasing says the same thing, it's a little misleading. 25. It's pronounced Doon uh dine. And Aragon lived to that age because he is the descendant of a half elf. He and his brother Elrond, and their parents, were given the choice between becoming elves and men. Aragorn's race was given long life and wisdom as a result of service fighting Morgoth. 26.She was actually more like 3/4 elven, but she got the same choice as Elrond and chose human after falling in love with Aragorn. (That stupid eternal life necklace from the movie was literally just a necklace, and it didn't make an appearance until the end of the book when she gave it to Frodo.) 27. Elves do NOT have a stupid ability like walking on snow. I mean, what the heck? Why? They are just exceptionally light. 34. Strawheads was a reference to the Rohirrims' blond hair. 46. It's a natural personality thing. Shadow of War is an abomination. In conclusion: Pretty good.

Tolkien himself said that Lord of the Rings was less of a sequel to The Hobbit as it was a sequel to The Silmarilion. Tolkien started writing the Silmarilion before LOTR. He finished most of it, but his son put together the remainder of Tolkien’s notes himself after his father died. So it came out after LOTR, but was started before. So publicly it was seen as a sequel to The Hobbit, but its story is actually much more connected to The Silmarilion.

Well little correction Elendil was not King of Gondor alone, he was High King of both Gondor and Arnor. His sons jointly ruled as Kings in Gondor (Isildur and Anarion), Isildur had his house in Minas Ithil (Later known as Minas Morgul) and Anarion set up his house in Minas Anor (Later known as Minas Tirith) But their set their seats of power (thrones) was in Osgiliath side by side and ruled jointly. Elendil ruled Arnor in the North. at the end of the War of the Last Alliance Elendil perished along with Gil-Galad in a epic duel against Sauron (The movies depict this wrong). Anarion he got killed from thrown rock from Barad-Dur I believe.

"Who's a LOTR fan at 10, before the films came out ?" I read it for the first time at 9 (actually before, "The Hobbit, " but there you go). Of course, I went to school in Scotland.

Wrong again, me bucko. Christopher Lee was originally considered for the role of Gandalf ONLY because of his friendship with Tolkien who, shortly before his death, wrote in a number of letters that in the event that the books were ever made into a movie (or series of movies), that he, himself, specifically wanted Lee to play the role, believing that he was the only actor able to bring the character to life properly. Lee graciously stepped down and took the lesser role because he was confident that McKellan would be brilliant, that McKellan was the better match for the role & that his personality matched Saruman much better. It's all in the DVD extras from the extended releases.

I don’t actually think it’s ever specified that Gimli has red hair. That’s just a movie decision.

Holy shit. This is an advertisement for Shadow of War. He 100% starts building up all of this hype for lord of the rings. You get pumped, it brings up such fond memories and makes you happy. So he gets about halfway through the video and he’s like, “alright, we’re gonna slowly talk about some other media that used LOTR.” Then he just slowly edges his way into talking about video games. But every single piece of media he mentions is “fucking dope.” Like, he talks this shit up like a beast. So you’ve just seen 7 or 8 fucking dope adaptations of your beloved series. Now, he’s about to talk about this one game and... oh wait, it’s new? It’s not out yet? Whoa. Oh hey, did you know you can do this awesome thing in shadow of War? Did you know they fixed this crappy thing from the first game? Did you know it’s set in between the hobbit and LOTR? Did you know... did you know.. fuck man. He’s trying to sell us a video game and it’s incredible. I bow down to you, lord factoid

101facts on New Zealand please I watched the Australian one and now I really want a NZ one, if you do you might won't to pronounce Maori places correctly because little 12 year old Maoris will get butthurt and come to the comment section telling you, "you need to pronounce the maori places and things correctly but nice video anyway"

You mentioned all these places, roads, etc. named after Tolkien characters and places - but what about all the metal bands? Gorgorth, Amon Amarth (meaning - Mount Doom), Isengard, Barad Dur, Burzum, Morgoth, Cirith Ungol, Balrog, Minas Morgul, Minas Tirith, Shadowfax, Mordor, Ringwraith, Carach Angren, Sauron, etc., etc. There are - a lot. And then there are also COUNTLESS songs (both metal and other genres) with themes/lyrics from LOTR lore, including of course, Led Zeppelin, and I think some Black Sabbath and Rush songs as well. Tolkien has inspired a ridiculous amount of people.

Fact 68 at 20:24 isn't true. In the scene where Frodo and Gandalf sit on the cart, the filmmakers used 'forced perspective', so Ian McKellen sat in a seat that was further forward than Elijah Wood's, making Frodo appear small.
