so beautiful at 13:39 🧡 This review was really great for me. Even the bits where you are stumbling to find record function ( I see from the lemondrop forum that this was added in a firmware update). The stumbling itself is useful to see as it gives an feel for the navigability of the device. Plus of course all the great ear candy supplied along the way. Thanks so much.

Think of Digital synthesis as "Bits" of information played out in the sound structure, very harsh, looking for order. Digital synths can also be warm as a summer breeze, it's all about how you arrange the Bits of information. In my Korg DSS-1 Sampler from years ago, this became very apparent to me, while truncating samples I made from additive waveforms directly from the synth. Looping, editing, truncating, splicing and finally a finished sample with structure and definition. I have since created hundreds of Digital samples, ranging from extremely harsh to subtle and delicate, using Korg's floppy disks as well as drawn Additive sounds directly from the DSS-1. I love the structure of Granular Synthesis, very Spectral in nature, not to different than Additive waveforms. Thankyou VolcaNiced for this fantastic demonstration, I hope to purchase this Granular Synth soon, and add it to my arsenal.

The nice thing about synthesizers is you can add the desired effects, either by software, or hardware and get the desired results you are looking to obtain, pre or post fader. I use six effects units, in various configurations and order to obtain the sound I am looking for. I find most synths effects in the manufactures instruments are lacking for sonic abilities. You can also reintroduce in a loop so to speak effects through your mixer FX Send. Experiment with combinations until your really satisfied with the end sound production. The Gain structure within your synth effects engines, often don't cut it, unless you have purchased say a Waldorf Iridium, or similar high end synth, where powerful dedicated effects are part of the structure of sound itself. Hope this has helped VolcaNiced, LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Expanding Knowledge.

I just got mine yesterday and so far it's really cool. Expensive? Yeah, a little bit. I think it's is worth $299 as opposed to $399 (US dollars of course). However, the only hardware alternative is the Tastychips granular synth, which has a LOT more under the hood but at something like $1100 - $1200 dollars and at that price we are getting in some heavy hitter territory. For now, I have a nice field recorder and some good thoughtful recordings paired with this little box can (hopefully) produce some interesting sounds.

Nice sounds but too expensive for someone at my skill level. I like the design but what I would like to see is a midi controller with slots so you can keep things like this tidy. They would need to be a standard size of course. The result would be like a Mini Modular synth. Just clip different units in like a pedal board, use them or bypass them.

@@bmmaaate I can so totally relate. I hope you are recording your work and uploading it, because looking back on that first year I had way more fun than later when I realized how much work it could be. I suspected this would be a problem so I did just that and posted about 20 tracks on SoundCloud (don't ask for a link, lol). I listen to these when I need humility, to remind me how much more I have to learn and every time I think I need a new synth. However, watching this vid makes me think I should sell some gear and get a dozen of these little cuties instead!

I was a bit surprised that you look at the oscillators the other way around. The simple osc as main an the granules as support. I think that's nice one for getting more conventional sounds enriched by all kind of granular stuff. Imagine what would be possible if we could free decide what a osc should be. Maybe in a future firmware. Or maybe 6 voices when only one granular is used 😎

Great review. I'm considering getting this over the Microfreak as they cost the same I think. How would you compare the two? I like the fx and sound quality of the Lemondrop but the MF tends to sound so childish and tinny without an added FX from the NTS1 or daw etc. I'm also not sure I can appreciate the paraphonic vs poly for detailed sound design. Thanks for the feedback. PS The volca is always a gem.
@Volcaniced

@@Volcaniced Yes, as an FX only box it is expensive. Actually, its expensive as a synthesizer imho too lol. I am just looking for a compact poly synth with built-in effects which the MicroFreak doesn't have unfortunately. That's why I'm considering the Lemondrop as an option. Was happy to see you review it as I enjoy your MicroFreak vids... I'm a closet musician (tiny desk space) and mostly do ambient type jams.

@@verdielg Check out the MicroMonsta2 (12 voice poly for 300 EUR but no Audio IN kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5SYdp2YYt52a6c) or at least the Circuit Tracks where you can use the internal FX with external gear. Closet musician is this something you invented? I love this designation!! :)
@verdielg
@verdielg 2 жыл бұрын
@@Volcaniced Ah, both the MicroMonsta2 and Circuit Tracks look interesting. Will check them out in more detail. Was thinking more about why the Lemon is fascinating and I was able to identify 3 reasons... the ultra compact size, the ability to get so much feedback onto one GUI screen and, last but not least, the immense FX engine of the synth. Closet musician hahaha. I used that phrase as I all my gear is currently stacked into a tiny closet when not in use and placed on a keyboard tray when in use. I hate clutter...it kills my whole creative vibe. Hence the reason why the Lemondrop may be so attractive. The Plinky is my #1 compact synth choice but is unavailable unfortunately.

@@verdielg Micromonsta 2 is a far more capable synth than lemondrop as it has 12 voice polyphony, compared to lemondrops 4 however they are very different with lemondrop being a granular synth. I really wanted lemondrop for granular stuff but micromonsta is also small better knobs and build all round and is a beast of a synth. Not to say lemondrop isn't but if your just looking for a synth and not granular synthesis I'd get the micromonsta 2.

Hallo!
