I am a 82 year old woodworker who truly enjoys your videos. I own most of the tools you highlight. Yet there is always something to learn. Thanks for your time.

Graham, it's great to see your videos. I'm re-reading some Fine Woodworking Magazines from the mid '80s and was a bit surprised when I saw a number of your article there. Keep up the good work.

An awl is okay for marking a line that you need to saw but not as nice as a pencil or better yet a making knife. A bonus of its point though at least to me is I need a nail or a screw here. You set it there and a little pressure on the handle leaves a nice small spot in the wood. I have very little depth vision any more and hitting the right spot on a drill press is harder now. Getting the brad point bit to sit in the mark the awl made helps a lot.

After some reflection, it seems the answer really is two. One needs a tool to cut and one to smash. Of course having only two tools limits what can be built! Having a couple of saws, a couple of chisels, two smashers, a tool to measure, a plane or two, and something to keep cutting tools sharp, means you can build much more. Thanks for this neat little series. With those tools, you can build things to clamp, square, hold, shoot , and improve cutting accuracy.

‘Smasher’ is a good name. I call mine a ‘slammer’ 😂

Thanks for this video. I have wanted one of those hammers and had no idea what they were called.

Some companies make new ones, but be warned - they aren’t the same quality as the older models. Just like everything else out there for us to buy, we have to go at it with a thinking mind! 😊

A question here: do you still practice cabinetry work? Beyond these videos, I think your viewers might just enjoy watching and learning from a master at actual work. Record the day in the life of an apprentice.
