That was a very valuable video. That hadn't occurred to me, but it makes perfect sense. I can see that same concept being useful when the motor is used as an alternator. Allowing easy start up and run in light wind, and then in heavy wind allowing additional load to be applied to act as both an overspeed brake and additional boost charging. Thank you. this subscription is by far the best one I have. By far! It only costs me the equivalent of a couple of cups of coffee a month.

luv your work mate, a pleasure to listen to and always end up learning something (like the bit about how you can control these motors by simply adjusting the voltage, no need for PWMing I guess), thank you so much

After watching yor channel for years I still come away with a smile and a genuinely positive feeling from the mix of how to fix/how to use/mad scientist videos you do. I rank your videos with other channels such as applied science, tech ingredient, and a few I can never remember the names of because they post new videos so infrequently. Well done. And Thank you.

if using a serries wound universal motor (field coils in serries with rotor coils) for a gokart, then it is easily controlled with adjusting just one thing, the voltage. Add more voltage to get power to accelerate from a stop, then bring the voltage down to when you're cruising at the speed you want. then when you want to go up hill, just increase the voltage to get the additional power needed. just dont dump too much power into a motor for too long. chose carefully and know its rated limites.

Regarding rewinding. Maybe have a play with ohms law to work out what resistance coil would be needed to drive same current through coil operating at different voltages. Then have a look at the volume of the different coils... Shorter thicker wire for lower voltage, but total volume remains same.

What can I use to insulate the field coils? Regular pvc electrical tape?

I would love to see a video on speed controls for a universal motor on AC. There are lots of videos on running these on DC, but I don't find much on using the feedback from the tach to control or limit speed on AC. Please consider a video to do this.

Incidentally, universal motors can be converted to switched reluctance motors with a little bit of rotor shaping. It turns into a pulse motor when you abandon the rotor windings.

Hey Rob Sir that's a great video, I wish you a very great weekend, my BLDC Moter is getting underway, plates done stator done winding n testing remains will send across videos as I do it, post this weekend, I got slowed down for the reason I got slip disc and was in awful lot of pain but getting back on track so let's hope for best, love and very warm regards from India🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

So i guess when you apply dc to the brushes you get ac coming from the coils ?

Unlike a permanent magnet DC motor they always spin the same way, regardless of polarity - when wired in their standard configuration If you want reverse, you have to wire stator/rotor separately. I used one from a Dyson to make into the vacuum pump for my gasifier.

I found a universal motor that is 5 H.P. 120 or 240 volts 1750 RPM. The bearings were shot. Cost fifty dollars for bearings and I have a totally inclosed fan cooled motor that is excellent. I would bet you that buying that motor would send you back a many a quid. Works great.

two questions, can the wire that connects the two field coils be considered a neutral if I was to be running this as an ac generator? on RMS' set up that's the blue wire. And for the rotor what roughly are the upper bounds of energy that rotor coil can handle? less than 12 v or even no more than 6 volts the higher the volts the stronger the field but what limits are there for these types of set ups? thanks to anyone who might have a thought to share.

You comment on the video that with a bridge rectifier and capacitor the output is controlled by the ‘power’ of the capacitor. In what way? The voltage or capacitance?

I would like to ask if the rotor would work again because I accidentally cut two wires from most of the rotor wires

If you are wondering if your motor is universal or not, check the model number imprinted on your motor. If it starts with the letter U, it's universal.

Sometimes motors also have thermal fuses which blow on the coils which makes repair simple. For example on cooling fan motors. Keep an eye out for those. Useful gen on control, never taught me that at poly. Today I brought back mt broken LCD display from the dump for the 2nd time 'cos the queues are too long. Resigned to stripping it down for the lenses. That'll teach me for not recycling!

I like converting failed LCD displays into lighting panels to hang on the wall. Strip them down to the frame and lenses, then install strips of LED lights all around the inside of the frame to shine into the acrylic panel. For added effect, you can paint an acrylic sheet to look like stained glass and make it look like a stained glass window on your wall as if light is coming in from outside. They draw ridiculously low power - the one on the wall in my parlor draws only 2 watts and is sufficient to work at my desk at night in low light.

A piece of tape applied on motor when test spinning would make those tests a bit more visual. And a bit dangerous, even small piece of tape can pop an eye if detached from something spinning 10 000 RPM:s. Hope this got your attention :)

So how about an arduino controlled 4 universal motor go-kart with perfect control of torque and motor speed? It could spin like a tank and corner better than a formula 1 car with some slip sensors on the wheels. One for Luke perhaps?
