My Uncle flew the F-100 in Vietnam. Afterward the A.F. told him he was "too old" (his words) to be a fighter pilot so the "let" him fly B-52s for SAC.

If I remember correctly Boyd's trick low speed in the F-100 was to lock his elbows on the canopy rails so the stick wouldn't move laterally and use his rudders to maneuver and that helped him keep it in control in that part of the envelope.

I was in the Air Guard back in the 1970's doing avionics maintenance on F-100's. During that time I got two rides in the back seat of an F-100F. The second ride was part of a training exercise where we were the aggressors against F-15's. I was with an experienced pilot who had flown in Korea and Vietnam while the F-15's were being flown by young pilots right out of flight school. During the first dogfight the Super Sabre I was in managed to shoot down an F-15.

Every time I watch/hear a Fighter Pilot Podcast I think, this has to be my favorite!!! All of you do a fantastic job detailing the a/c, crews, jobs, and uses of each!!! I've very much enjoyed the addition of Mr Gordon on the Century Series Broadcast!! He's a fantastic speaker who wrote a terrific book (which I've read twice (so far ;-))!!! My wife purchased his book for our annual anniversary trip (she likes for me to put away the tech on our trips to the NC mountains ;-), she actually sent him the amazon price for the book as she thought he might take his wife out to supper with the extra... That honest rascal actually sent back the extra money, so my wife sent it back with a note explaining what it was for... He's just a good, honest, old fashioned man!!! God Bless You All & God Bless America!!! :-)

I had a similar experience when I got a model kit of an F-100 at a Christmas party. I was too young so my father built it for me. Then about 20 years later I was in the Air Guard and I got two rides in a real F-100. Its funny how things like that happen sometimes.

Two movies that the F-100 starred in was "Skyjacked" where New Mexico ANG F-100s were painted with red stars to portray Migs that were intercepting the hi jacked airliner as it entered russian air space and "Andromeda Strain" where an air force pilot flying an "F-4 Phantom " in the movie was disabled by the alien virus and crashed. When they go to the crash site, it is actually a wrecked F-100.

@yes_head2 жыл бұрын
It looked faster than it was. I always have to remind myself that it's actually a contemporary of the MiG-19, the Communist Block's first supersonic fighter. Both were powered by early axial flow turbojets, and the engineering around efficient supersonic design wasn't fully understood yet.

The main place people saw the F-100 was with the USAF Flight Demo Team, the Thunderbirds. It’s the only Thunderbird that was flown for several years (F-100C from 1956-1964), then had another aircraft they transitioned to with the F-105B (only 6 shows with a major accident), then went back to the F-100 with the D model that same year and continued with Huns until 1969, when they transitioned to the F-4E.
@FighterPilotPodcast3 жыл бұрын
Didn't know!
@LRRPFco523 жыл бұрын
@@FighterPilotPodcast They discovered structural weaknesses in the F-105B after one of the T-Birds broke onto pieces during an arrival at Hamilton AFB, and another F-105B in USAF service, I believe at Eglin AFB, suffered the same type of break-up, so they grounded the fleet. The T-Birds couldn't wait around, so they went to F-100Ds to get back into training and shows. The Hun was really tight in the formation compared to other platforms.

The F-100 was in one movie that I know of. It was used in the 1972 movie "Skyjacked". They were used as Russian Migs. I can understand why they did it but it has always bothered me--It's the only thing I remember about the movie! Great interview--beautiful aircraft. Thanks ,Bill Gibson--Dallas Tx.

Sorry , I corrected my mistake in calling it Airplane, look at me, Robert Stack was in Airplane
@robertstack21443 жыл бұрын
The movie called Airplane , as I recall, did have four F-100 C aircraft in it from New Mexico ANG(188TH) . We were 136th NYANG, Niagara, and the 188th was in the adjacent revetments at TuyHoa RVN, 68-69. The four aircraft had four foot high Red Stars painted on the mid fuselage. They were suppose to be Soviet interceptors that intercepted the airliner floan by Chareton Heston as I recall.
